Feared mobster Frank “Bobo” Marrapese, a convicted killer and former member of the Patriarca crime family in Providence, died Friday morning while serving time in Rhode Island for his role in an illegal gambling ring.
State Police Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Philbin confirmed the passing of the 74-year-old gangster in a brief phone interview. Marrapese died at Rhode Island Hospital, according to Susan Perez, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.
A cause of death wasn’t immediately available, though authorities said he dealt with heart problems. His death was first reported by WPRI-TV in Providence.
Marrapese was released in 2008 from the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, R.I., after serving 25 years for the 1975 slaying of Richard “Dickie” Callei.
Callei had visited the Acorn Social Club, then a mob hangout in the Federal Hill section of Providence, the night he was fatally shot. His body was later discovered buried near a golf course. Marrapese was convicted of the killing in 1987.
He was acquitted of two other murders, including the brutal 1982 bludgeoning death of 20-year-old Ronald McElroy, an East Providence man whose skull was crushed with a baseball bat after a traffic incident.
A 1984 Boston Globe article mentioned Marrapese as a potential successor to Raymond L.S. Patriarca, the head of organized crime in New England who died the day before the story appeared.
The article noted that Marrapese was at the time “out of action and . . . unable to campaign for the top job” because he was serving a 10-year bid for buying a truckload of stolen chairs and also facing murder indictments.
“He faces another charge of stealing 888 cases of whiskey in Providence,” the article stated.
More recently, Marrapese found trouble in 2011, when he was charged as part of a sprawling illegal betting ring that also ensnared longtime Patriarca associates Edward Lato and Alfred ‘‘Chippy’’ Scivola.
Marrapese pleaded guilty in 2013 to criminal charges in connection with the ring and was sentenced to nine years in prison, landing him back at the ACI.
“He was the real deal,” Philbin said Friday, adding that many mobsters from the heyday of organized crime are on the decline. “They’re all getting older now. I’m sure there’s somebody young ready to take his place. There’s always somebody behind him.”

Scivola died earlier this year. So at least 8 members left (Lato is in prison) in Providence. None of them under 65, most over 70.

I wouldn't list Junior either, yea I'm sure he's made but I don't think anything has come out since he served his time showing he was connected to anything at all lately. If Matty Gugs getting out didn't bring him back nothing will as they were very close.
If I didn't have my case coming up, I would like to come back with you gentlemen when this is over with and really lay the law down what is going on in this country.....

Americo Petrillo died in 2008. Sal D'Aquila may also be dead. So at least 31 or 32 members remaining.
Also on the members who have flipped list only Salemme, Mercurio and Rosetti were made. You can add Robert "Bobby Cigar" DeLuca, Gaetano Milano and Antonino Cucinotta to member defector list. Joseph Napolitano may be another one.

Re: Frank "Bobo" Marrapese dies in prison
If the in prison guys are accurate and up to date that's 26 made guys on the street and some of those are not active (Patriarca Jr) or may not be active (Manocchio). Only two are younger than 50, one of which is prison. Maybe they've made people recently though, they probably have to wonder what their recruitment pool is like now. Have they historically been notably selective in who and how many they make? Also what's the latest associates estimate from the FBI, 100 like the others i'm guessing?
You'd think they'd have to be bottom of the nine remaining families, or possibly Decalvacante i'm not really aware of their current state.

Re: Frank "Bobo" Marrapese dies in prison
The 2015 Stango busts prove that, whilst they're obviously not the criminal empire they once were, they still have a viable structure and are really doing well from the lack of federal attention. For example they have a boss and underboss with codenames (or maybe they're just regular nicknames that the feds don't know or won't tell us) who nobody seems to be able to ID (Big Head and Milk or something). I think they're heavily involved in labor racketeering(?) or maybe not so much anymore. They also have a much larger recruitment pool than Boston/Providence.
Re: Frank "Bobo" Marrapese dies in prison
Didn't i read Big Head and Milk were Guaracci and Majuri? Or was that just speculation that was never confirmed? Also wasn't there one called Horse? Who is the boss, Majuri since Guaracci died?

That seems to be long gone. They lost that when they lost LIUNA Locals 394 (building contractors) and 1030 (asbestos removal). Today their rackets appear to be low end stuff like moving untaxed cigarettes, stolen property, loansharking, minor gambling, extortion and minor drug dealing.
That was speculation. "Horse" was IDed as the Acting Boss and "Milk' was IDed as Street Boss. “Big Head” was IDed as a Capo. Nothing has coe out on who the new Boss is.
