Monroe bookmaking ring busted, 2 brothers charged
By Howard Frank, Pocono Record Writer
October 25, 2017

Two Monroe County brothers were charged with running a bookmaking operation in Monroe County Monday.

Nicholas Dangelo 68, of Pocono Pines, and Anthony Dangelo, 65, of Mount Pocono were accused of setting up an elaborate sports betting scheme that used computers, passwords and funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars through intermediaries to an offshore “office,” or illegal bookmaking operation.

State police investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Organized Crime Task force began looking into the actions of the Dangelos in 2015 through a confidential informant. The informer told police about the illegal bookmaking operation run by Nicholas Dangelo in Monroe County. Dangelo was allegedly using a website, once called omcatsports.com, then changed to http://bigfish.ag.

The investigation began in Oct. 2015, when the confidential informant agreed to act as an informant. He told Nicholas Dangelo that he could bring bettors into his operation. A fee structure was agreed upon, where informant would receive 40 percent of the gambling proceeds or losses, and then pay Dangelo back or collected funds from the confidential informant.

The confidential informant would meet every week with Dangelo to either pay him his percentage or collect funds to distribute to winning bidders. All communications between the confidential informant and Dangelo were either by cell phone or in person, police said.

A state police investigator, acting as a bettor, received a login and passwords “90102” and “Rye” to access the web sites, and began placing sports bets.

Dangelo would often meet with the confidential informant to exchange money. Anthony Dangelo accompanied the brother several times, because his car got better mileage, according to the police report.

No money or credits were made or transferred through the website. Winnings and losses were paid out or collected in person. Settlements would occur every Monday.

The confidential informant said Nicholas Dangelo told him the office was located in Costa Rica.

In March 2016, Dangelo introduced the confidential informant to a man he said worked in the office. The three of them discussed expanding the operation to accept bettors in New Jersey.

Dangelo also said he wanted to bring in another man to work for the confidential informant and said he was good at bringing in bettors. Dangelo said he had 50 or 60 players under him but the “office” had thousands of players in the operation.

Dangelo told the confidential informant he would give him the user names and passwords of the bettors so he could settle up with them on Mondays.

Police executed a search warrant of Oct. 25, 2015 at Dangelo’s residence. They found over $5,000 in cash in the bedroom, $200 of which was recorded currency from investigators. They also found records of bets, accounts and transactions made in the course of the bookmaking operation.

Investigators also found a note which said Safe - 8,000; Bank – 107,900, and T – 17,000.

The safe was located in the bedroom and contained $400. Police believe the bank refers to Dangelo’s safe deposit box, which was later found to contain $110,150 in cash along with collectible coins and jewelry, all which was seized. Police further believed “T” referred to Dangelo’s daughter, who had a bank account containing $16,232.64 as of Aug. 31, 2016.

On Nov. 30, 2016, during an interview with police, Dangelo admitted to the bookmaking operation, according to the police report.

Dangelo also met up with another individual at Billy’s Diner in Tannersville and the Scotrun Diner in Scotrun to settle up after the men tallied the wagers.

Also found in the search of Dangelo’s home was a loaded Charter Arms .38 Special handgun, which Dangelo was prohibited from possessing due to a prior conviction.

Nicholas Dangelo was charged with 78 bookmaking and related counts, and Anthony Dangelo was charged with 34 counts. Most of the charges were felonies.

Both men’s bail was set at $50,000 unsecured. They were arraigned on Monday and have preliminary hearings scheduled for Nov. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in front of Magisterial District Judge Richard Claypool.

Any speculation by anyone if they are kin to Joe (Little Joe) D'Angelo?
