Thomas (Gastano) "Toddo" Marino

Post by Antiliar »

Looking for additional information on him, like which crew he was in and who was in his crew when he was a capo. This is a brief description to get started:

THOMAS ALOYSIUS MARINO, was., Salvatore Gaetano Maiorana (true name), Gaetano Marino, Godo Marino, Salvatore Marino, Thomas Marano, Toddo Marine, Tatto, Toddo, Toddy, Todo, Toto, Totto

New York 92-669

THOMAS ALOYSIUS MARINO, FBI Number 1644357, was born June 9, 1898, in Milazzo, Province of Messina (Sicily), Italy, and resides 286 19th Street, Brooklyn, New York. Subject arrested by Immigration and Naturalization Service on May 26, 1953, for deportation on a warrant issued under Section 241 (A) (4) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act in that he had been convicted of two crimes involving moral turpitude; namely, petty larceny and attempted burglary, third degree. On March 15, 1956, in District Court, District of Columbia, Judge TAMM rendered a decision awarding the subject summary judgment, cancelling the order of deportation and declaring it null and void. MARINO has reportedly been engaged in bookmaking, receiving stolen goods, narcotics, Italian lottery, stolen cars, pier activities, and the vending and amusement machine business.

He was a Genovese Family caporegime who allegedly owned the Dixie Tavern in Brooklyn, reportedly taking over some rackets from Joe Adonis. In the mid-1950s he was called the "big boss" of the Brooklyn underworld. One source claims he was a member of the Navy Street Gang, but he was probably too young. Another says he was a friend of Al Capone's before he moved to Chicago. He died on November 20, 1979, in Queens, New York.

Antiliar, I think tha he died in '98 and was a 100 years old. It's the Brooklyn crew that later went to Crazy Tommy and later to Shades Malangone. HK told me that was a rater small crew.

Oh yeah I've read that he was the 'main man' in South Brooklyn. Whatever that means. A little trivia, the steaks at the Dixie tavern were great back in the day.

Yeah, Toddo Marino died in 1979. On internet (mafiawiki???) it says 1998 but that´s incorrect.

Antiliar, I can´t help you with Marino´s early years but I have an excellent report on the Lanza brothers and their grip on the Fulton Fish Market. I can´t post it here but if you like, I can send it to your private email. (If you haven´t seen it already that is.) In the report, links between Harry Lanza (Genovese captain) and Toddo Marino are described. For example, undelings to the Lanza brothers later reported to Marino and after Marino´s death, to Contaldo. This seems to suggest that Toddo Marino took over from Harry Lanza sometime in the 1970s, possibly even before Lanza´s death in 1977. My understanding is that Marino also functioned as acting captain in the late 1950s/early 1960s for Lanza when he was having his legal troubles.

It´s possible that Marino was under Joe Adonis in his early years.
There you have it, never printed before.
