For me it's twofold. As a father of a 2.5 year old with another on the way in May, not a chance. I'm a different person than I was prior to meeting my wife. However, if it was the 1920's-1960's, those were different times and I could have easily made a living bookmaking. I ran a bookmaking operation in college with two other guys, only took bets on college and pro football and we cleared close to $2500 per week each. When my dad realized what was going on, he wasn't happy to say the least. My dad grew up with quite a few guys who became pretty big in the landscape of OC in the greater Youngstown area, but my dad was a straight arrow, so he had his close friend Ernie have a chat with me. Needless to say, we closed the book down after we graduated and I went off to grad school in Rhode Island. Ironically, when I entered grad school in 2000 in Newport, RI, one of my professors was a Captain on the Providence Police Department and also a lawyer. The FBI showed up one evening at Salve Regina University and took Captain Jack Ryan to FBI HQ for questioning in Operation Plunderdome. He ended up taking early retirement and was finally allowed to keep his pension, as he got caught up with Mayor Buddy Cianci. My answer would have to be no in today's organized crime landscape, the best days are well behind us.
