I have a close family member that goes by Sonny, and it came about just like you said. Of course we're not an Italian household, but that is more common than not. It started the same way with him being called "Sonny boy" and it stuck ever since and now everyone calls him Sonny instead of his real name which is NOTHING even close to Sonny

Yeah makes sense, Phat. Then, when you have 10 boys in the house all cousins, all called Sonny. You start hearing Sonny D, Sonny R, Big Sonny, Lil Sonny, Sonny from next door, Sonny Mooch etc. Our family does that with the name Joey and Neil

Love it, Dix!! I think the name Sonny sounds masculine but approachable. I've heard it many times to mean Sonny boy. And if you forget a young kid's name that's what you call him
