Good point.

My apologies and genuine thanks to HK, Pogo, Wiseguy and any other contributors.

I hope it didn't come across like I was chastising you for omitting them because I wasn't. I appreciate your support for these (pain in the padded ass charts.) I just brought them up as a shout out because I'm incredibly impressed by HK's researching prowess in the 60's/70's and Pogo/Wiseguy's categorizing of the the recent eras. That's what makes this forum such a great place as we all can combine our efforts into something larger. Again, thanks buddy.

Great chart! Can you elaborate on the pic/drawing of Maranzano?

Once again, another amazing chart from you guys, and once again I really admire and appreciate you guys work and research. And Anthony Passananti, is that the same one whom supposedly committed suicide at the age of 94? And Costentino, same one who was a suspect in the murder of Petrosino? I wonder, as on this chart their listed as Bonannos, I wonder where they tie in with the Morello/Terranova clan, as in some other sources both men are identified as Morello members, and according to Mike Dash, Passananti headed a grocery racket for Morello, at one point. I take it you guys would know more about that subject than I currently do, just that it was interesting seeing them on this chart.

Came from Thom Hunt who had a forensic drawing recreated based on Maranzano's murder photos. It does look very similar to the Italo actor Rudolph Valentino but one of Maranzano's children bears a close resemblance.

Both men yes... Before 1910 everyone was considered under Morello, which is true if you're referring to him as Boss of Bosses when everyone was technically under him. Dash did a great job but his work has its limitations, 3 Families existed in NY prior to 1910 and just like today they mingled and coexisted and were involved in joint ventures. The grocery racket was more Lupo's thing than Morello's although he was apart of it. For more info read the article by Antiliar, Lennert and myself which is about 70 pages with 30+ pages of sources. We break down the entire NYC mafia 1850-1920's: the lineage, the territory, blood relations, rackets etc.

I thought that it was disavowed as a bogus pic? "Very similar" might be an understatement:

Thom Hunt is a legitimate and honest researcher so I don't believe there was malintent. And again, one of Maranzano's children looks eerily similar to the photo above.

So there's more Maranzano murder photos other than the one where he's sprawled out on the floor?

To be totally honest guys, Antiliar and myself trust Thom Hunt and I myself never spoke with him about it. I'll email Thom Hunt and ask him for more information and post his response here. I have no opinion, I wasn't trying to release something as "finally, what Maranzano looked like." If Antiliar has anything to add he will. If, for some reason, Hunt's answer is not up to par, I'll include a "no photo" image (or perhaps Michael Gambon as Don Faranzano from the film Mobsters for the fuck of it), it makes no difference to me.

Also, no one needs to pm me "out of respect," if something is incorrect then it's incorrect and we all learn from it. I have no ego in this nor do I take being questioned as an insult, I'm not Picasso. Questions and disagreements add to the learning base. I emailed Thom and let's see what he has to say.

Email answered. I hope this answers the authenticity of approach to honesty. To anyone not satisfied, I have nothing more to offer, call it a fake/ruse if you will but I can state that it was done with the honest of intents because I trust Thom not to make shit up, unlike many others who graze these forums:
Years ago, I received some critical emails relating to my drawing of Maranzano. I hear that it resembles other people. To me, it looks quite a bit like my Sicilian great-grandmother. But I sincerely hope it looks most like Maranzano. I have never claimed that it was anything other than a rough approximation of Maranzano's appearance (unlike those who circulated and published a photo of someone else, claiming it was Maranzano). If a photograph of the living Maranzano ever surfaces, I would be very interested to compare it to my drawing (as well as to a photo of my great-grandmother).

As you probably know, we actually do have a number of images of Maranzano following his murder. There is a sketch made during the homicide investigation that shows his left side. There is a photograph taken of the crime scene from Maranzano's left side. There is a photograph taken from above. My drawing was created by cleaning up as well as possible the two death photos, rotating and skewing them, and filling in questionable details with details from the sketch (chin, earlobes, hairline, nose, etc.).

I saved some images during the cleaning up process. They are attached (see smard.jpg) along with the initial murder photos (smara1, smara2, smarb, smarc). The first drawing I created from these was based upon the left side photo of the dead Maranzano. That view initially seemed to present the best opportunity for a lifelike image. The result is also attached (smare.jpg). I was not happy with this, as it did not have the weight or some of the other details of the overhead and sketch images, and the shape of the nose needed to be almost entirely created.

I really don't understand why this has become a problem. If people feel that the drawing does not resemble Maranzano, I respect their view. If they think it looks like Errol Flynn or Shelley Winters (you know, now that I look at it...) or Michael Jackson, I don't mind in the slightest. If anyone wishes to create a different/more accurate image from the originals, he or she would have my full support.

A little bit off topic, but does anyone know or is it possible to find or point me where I could find the address of Joe Bonannos home that he used to live in in Hempstead, Long Island? I ask because I was reading Honor Thy Father, and I know Joes mentioned it in his book, but Bill talks about that house, driving through Garden City to lose tails and stuff. He described the house as a red brick tudor style home in Hempstead but closer toward East Meadow. I'm from Long Island and around that area, and undoubtedly the neighborhood has changed ALOT, but I'd like to do some exploring when I get the chance, and I'd like to know if the house still stands, if it does, I can take some pictures, show what the house looked like and how the neighborhood and demographic had DRASTICALLY changed. From Bills description of it being in Hempstead but close to East Meadow, my estimation is he may have been referring to the Oak Street/Westbury Boulevard area, over around Hofstra, as thats basically the end of the Hempstead/East Meadow border before you actually get into East Meadow by Eisenhower Park. So anyone got any ideas?

Edit: Sorry, wrote the wrong street name in my initial post. Below is the corrected.

This is the address from the 1940 census:

61 Clermont Ave
Hempstead, New York
