Re: Bonanno Admin Succession
I feel like there are some things that went on between the captain and administrative levels during the 1930s-1960s or even 70s that we don't know about because there were few if any sources in a position to give that info.

That may be the case in alot of instances but in others it's just a simple case of things being overlooked and/or incorrect information being stated and repeated as factual. Take Mari, do a search on the man and every source lists him as disappearing one year prior than he actually did. There's evidence to suggest he took over from Sciacca for a very short time before disappearing in 1969, not 1968.B. wrote:I feel like there are some things that went on between the captain and administrative levels during the 1930s-1960s or even 70s that we don't know about because there were few if any sources in a position to give that info.
Now it seems to be the consensus that Sciacca was boss until 1971 but I'd like to know the source for that. Other info seems to indicate that Evola was boss during that time and that makes more since as Sciacca was on the street until 1971 and if boss, wouldn't need an acting one prior to that. And if Mari, Sciacca's former under from 66-68 became boss, it's doubtable that Sciacca was boss twice.
As for this top captain/capodecina of capidecina business, some probably suspects would be John Bonventre and then Carmine Galante.

"capodecina of capodecinas" is not a rank. The informant meant to say that Marangello was more influental and perhaps more respected than some of the other top guys. That´s nothing new. Some captains were part of the Bonanno administation way back. But rankwise, they were still captains.
Mari disappeared Sept 18th 1969. So he didn´t last more than a week as boss, if that informant is to be believed. I´ve read accounts saying Mari and Adamo were killed because they attempted a power grab. But why would they attempt a power grab if they were already at the top? But that´s perhaps a discussion more suited for another thread.
Evola seems to have been named acting boss sometime right after Mari´s disappearence. He had serious legal troubles at around the time and was assisted by both Rastelli and DiFilippi in running the Family. By 1972, Evola was definitely official boss. I don´t have a date when Evola was named boss. Sciacca was out of the picture, probably already when Mari was recognized boss.

Rastelli was incarcerated in '75 leaving Galante on the street to try and seize control. In 1978 Galante went to prison for a few months and then there was a panel put in place. Do we know who authorized this panel? Rastelli or was these Galante loyalists?
-Ruling Panel- (March 1978-February 1979)
-The Ruling Panel included Capos Philip “Phil Lucky” Giaccone, Michael “Mikey Z” Zaffarano and Frank “The Hat” Lupo.

I think those guys were initially Galante supporters.

Is Joe Cammarono and Joe Cammarono Jr one and the same or a case of father and later on son in admin positions? Thanks.

Re: Bonanno Admin Succession
Acting boss is better. The only strange thing will be he was not put there but put himself in that position. This has been normal for many years in Sicily. The acting boss puts himself there. It is not so normal in New York except in this case. Rastelli didn't act until he had the power to remove him and the commission supported him.Antiliar wrote:Galante is a problem for a chart. I don't believe he was ever an official underboss, but he was a powerful capo. After he came out of prison there was a faction that recognized him as the boss, but officially Rastelli was the boss and Massino was his "street boss" and messenger. So when Donnie Brasco was associated with the Bonannos, the faction he associated with had the understanding that Galante was their boss. He was making new members and the others were afraid of him. So I guess I would call him the unofficial faction boss or something similar.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Updated, thanks.
Tony Urso's photo always makes me chuckle. He's being booked and looks like he's the happiest man on earth. And those whites, he could have done Colgate commercials.

Thank you. But with the exception of the design and layout I can't take much credit with anything post-1930. The 1960's-1970's should stand as a testament to how well researched Hairyknuckles is; as well as Pogo and Wiseguy post-1980.SonnyBlackstein wrote:Brilliant chart CC.

This was the most difficult chart I ever attempted. So many damn Ruling Panels for arguably one of the smaller NYC Families.
Re: Bonanno Admin Succession
Once again, good work Christie. That is quite a chart. Must have been a major pain in the ass to put it together.
