Chris, I still can´t find it. Are you sure Bonanno said in his book Caruso, DefIlippo and Zicorelli headed the Family at the time of his retirement? What I can find is on page 291. "Before leaving New York for good, I appointed a three man committee to fill the leadership vacuum temporarily until a new father could be chosen. The committee included Angelo Caruso, a steady and peaceful man of the old Tradition. This was but a caretaker arrangement."
It was in Bill's book that DeFilippo and Ziccarelli were named as being on the panel with Caruso.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
HairyKnuckles wrote:I don´t know. One of two refereneces on Petrone holding an administration spot is this: "Within a very short period of time of Bonanno´s disappearance, many of his family approached Gambino and wanted to come into the Gambino family. Bonanno appointed a consigliere in his absence, one John "Bennett" Petrone. Petrone promptly came to Carlo Gambino and asked him what to do. Gambino told Petrone to play along with Bonanno."
This doesn´t make any sense to me. First because Bonanno never told anybody where he was hiding. Not even his son knew where he was. Bonanno members thought he was dead. So this doesn´t rhyme with "Bonanno appointed a consigliere in his absence". And secondly, Bill Bonanno was the consigliere at the time of JB´s disappearance, why would he appoint a consigliere when his son had been selected to this position in 1963 (Bonanno dissappeared in 1964.) The only thing that makes sense is that Petrone was apponted acting consigliere by Bill Bonanno while Bill was incarcerated for three months in 1965.
The second reference I´ve seen is Konigsberg claiming that "Morales is underboss" and that his predecessor was Carmine Galante. He also claimed that "Galante´s predecessor was John Petrone". This would mean that Petrone held the underboss spot shortly in the 1950s. But again, this doesn´t make any sense to me since Galante was never underboss to Bonanno.
I'll include Petrone but make a note of his uncertainty. Same with the 3 Man Ruling Panel JB allegedly left in place which conflicts with others that by '68 (at least) that JB was totally dethroned.
By your wording I think you've come to the same conclusion that he orchestrated his own disappearance, which remains a contested narrative to say the least. I remember reading an FBI agent's testimony regarding that topic and he said something along the lines of: when someone is murdered it's as if they never existed, when JB disappeared his name still was mentioned in wiretaps. Something to that effect. On a side note: years later in the 1970's or 80's JB's name was brought up again and one member stated that Joe's father was "a friend of ours" in Italy. I always thought that was hilarious for some unbeknownst reason.

JB's too. I can pull it out and snap a shot if anyone would like. I don't believe I'm having a Rick Perry moment.
*Sigh... OOPS. And this is why everyone, including myself, needs to be called on their shit. Thankee-sai. So yeah, evidently deFillipo and Ziccarelli must have been named in B.Bon's book at some point between 'admitting' he was the basis for Michael Corleone and Johnny Roselli being the second gunman on the grassy knoll.

In 1969, Sciacca stepped down and according to informant, Mari and Adamo made a power move and was killed for it. Evola was made boss, Rastelli was made underboss and Nick Alfano was made consigliere.
From FBI docs:
1964, Oct 21: Joe Bonanno disappears
1964, Oct late: Frank La Bruzzo designated acting boss, according to NY T-4.
1965: Commission designates Gaspare Di Gregorio as boss. This was engineered by Stefano Magaddino and Thomas Luchese, per NY T-22, NY T-7 and NY T-5. His underboss is Peter Crociata and consigliere is Paul Sciacca.
1966, May: NY T-23 reports that Gaspare Di Gregorio is seriously ill with heart disease and under consideration for replacement.
1966, May 17: Joe Bonanno turns himself in to federal court while under indictment. Three factions form, one supporting Bonanno, another supporting Di Gregorio, and a third supporting another replacement.
1966, Aug: NY T-7 reported that a six-man council is running the Family due to Di Gregorio’s incapacitation, inactivity, and failure to sufficiently oppose Bonanno.
1966, Sep: NY T-3 says Di Gregorio is still boss.
1966, Oct: NY T-2 says Bonanno will fight the Commission.
1966, Nov: NY T-7 says Paul “Patty Shack” Sciacca was being considered to replace Di Gregorio
1967, Jan: NY T-108 says Di Gregorio had been removed or stepped down as boss, and that Bonanno was back as boss with “blessings of Carlo Gambino.”
1967, Feb: NY T-23 says Bonanno is trying to regain his former position with Joe Zicarelli as underboss. NY T-3 says Salvatore “Bill” Bonanno is boss with his father advising him; later NY T-3 and T-7 say that Bill Bonanno was only boss over the loyalists. T-7 then said the new setup was:
B: Joe Zicarelli
U: Angelo Caruso
C: Salvatore Bonanno
Caporegime: Frank Mari
T-23 agreed with T-7’s information, and this applied only for the loyalist faction.
1967, May: The Family was reorganized again, this time with Paul Sciacca as boss, Zicarelli as underboss, and Bill Bonanno demoted to soldier, per NY T-7.
1967, Jun: T-23 reported that Angelo Caruso was now boss, Zicarelli underboss for New Jersey and Vito De Filippo underboss for New York. Paul Sciacca was placed on the “board.” Some old-timers are angry at Zicarelli and Sam DeCavalcante for defending the Bonannos. In mid-June T-23 said Sciacca was now boss and Zicarelli has been dropped from the administration. In July T-2 said that the majority of members don’t know who the boss is, and as far as he knew Di Gregorio was still the boss.
1967, Aug: T-3 says Sciacca is trying to become boss with the help of Joe Colombo.
1967, Aug: T-179 says Joe Bonanno has retaken the throne, and some loyalists who received protection of Gambino were returned to the fold.
1967, Sep: An informant (no number given) says that a meeting was held between the Bonanno, Luchese and Gambino Families, and they decided that both Bonannos are to be killed and the members to be split by the Gambino and Luchese Families.
1967, Oct: Commission officially recognized Sciacca as boss and Frank Mari as underboss.
1968, May: T-7 says Vito Genovese gave orders from prison for the shooting to stop and for the Bonannos to stay out West.
1969, Dec: As of this date, Sciacca is still boss and Mari is still underboss and Michael Adamo the consigliere. Rusty Rastelli was noted to have met with Zicarelli, who acts as a peacemaker. (Note: Mari and Adamo were killed on 18 Sep 1969 and were replaced according to one source, Natale Evola, a Bonanno loyalist, as underboss, and Rastelli, a "young Turk," as consigliere; Rastelli was also a Bonanno loyalist. Another [writer Anthony DeStefano] says Sciacca installed a panel consisting of Evola, Rastelli and Joseph DiFilippi). In Sept 1968, Joe Bonanno reportedly made peace with Sciacca and permanently retired to Arizona.
1971, May 13: Sciacca is indicted and steps down. He is succeeded by Natale "Joe Diamond" Evola.
1973, Aug 28: Evola dies and succeeded by Rastelli.

Note the date (6-8-67). The war lasted for close to another year before JB relocated to Tucson permanently.
So what do you make of this? I'm right in the thick of the Banana War and don't want to move onto the 70's until the 60's are concluded.
And I must say: you're a damn excellent researcher on the 60's-80's. Truly remarkable.
Thanks! It´s easy when there is an interest in it. And time for it!
Regarding the link from MF above, I think it was a rumor that never materialized. It´s possible it was just a suggestion brought to the Commission but was never approved. At least not at that time (6-8-67). The wording is kinda weird too (the TWO underbosses).

That seems correct but I would put Alfano as consigliere and DiFilippi as acting for him. And don´t forget Cannone. He was first acting at the time when DiFilippi was indicted (date unknown). By 1974, Cannone was official consigliere.
There was a ruling panel in place when Galante was imprisoned in Oct 1977 for parole violations (Philly Lucky, Cannone and Zaffarano). Another ruling panel was set up right after the Galante murder in 1979 (Philly Lucky, Sonny Red and Canonne???) I think JD has more info on this.
