Bonanno Admin Succession
I'll tackle this next and then take a break for a bit. I got 1898/1905-1930 but I will need help with 1930 on. I'd appreciate your help Pogo, JD, Wiseguy and HK.
Note: during the Banana War the family split into two factions with two admins, I'll do my best to include them both.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.

Salvatore “Bill” Bonanno (Mid 1950s-1964) Became Consiglieri.
Charles “Charlie Batts” Battaglia (1964-1968)
-In 1968 this Crew broke off from the Bonanno family and became their own group.

On Galante, personally I don't think he went past caporegime. John Morales ought to be there, he was promoted to underboss after Frank Garofalo was deported, but Bill Bonanno said there was a time gap in between. Early capos (per Bill Bonanno) included Gaspare DiGregorio and Sebastiano "Buster" Domingo. John Bonventre would be another one. Possible early capos would be Frank Labruzzo (Bonanno's father-in-law) and Pietro Bonventre (Joe B's uncle).

Galante Crew (Lower East Side / Little Italy)
- John Aquaro
- Carmine Galante (Upped or Imprisoned)
- Joseph Notaro (Upped to Acting Consigliere following Bonanno abduction, then cast aside by DiGregorio)
- John Aquaro (Stepped down due to health / DiGregorio reorganization)
- Michael Consolo (Upped by DiGregorio)
- Frank Mari (Acting) (Official soon after)
- Mari upped to Underboss, crew went to Marangello (with Pasquale Giganti possibly acting temporarily)
- Marangello (upped to Underboss c. 1974)
For Bushwick-Ridgewood Crew
- Thomas D'Angelo
- John Fiordilino
- Frank Tartamella (Replaced by Buccellato c. 1973)
- Giuseppe Buccelato (demoted after fled to Italy)
- Pietro Licata (Murdered 1976)
- Salvatore Catalano
- Eventually under Francesco Navarra
Just going by what I've read lately, I think the Galante succession is more or less correct. It was definitely under Consolo then Mari, and Pasquale Giganti was in there as well (not Ridgewood crew like originally thought).
_______________________________________________________________________
I thought I had some of it (specifically Galante crew succession) straightened out but your layout is completely different than what I have. Did this come from Bill Bonanno or somewhere else.
It came from the Sam the Plumber tapes. There were several conversations in it with Joe Ziccarelli who broke down what was going on. In June 1965 he said how they had split his regime up between Sabella (who got the Downtown portion plus the Jersey guy's like himself) and a guy he only id as "Mondo" got the Bronx portion. I'm pretty sure "Mondo" is Armondo Pallistrino. He is the only name from this time period that fits. It seems that Notaro kept his Capo rank as there was no mention of him being demoted throughout the tapes but it doesn't seem like he had any Soldiers from 1965 until his death.
Notaro was also on those tapes and he (in 1965) refers to John Aquaro as a Capo other then himself. I don't know if Aquaro at one time broke off from the Galante-Notaro Crew but by 1964/65 they appeared to be seperate Crews.
____________________________________________________________________
That might explain who was heading the Bronx crew at certain times (Pollastrino).
For the Galante crew this makes it even more confusing. Take Notaro out of the Aquaro group crew succession I posted and it almost makes sense. Does the book list dates for the convos? There was constant change in the group during 1964-1966. There's a CI (some of us here think it was Bill Bonanno) who was interviewed by the FBI during late 1965 and early 1966 (and possibly beyond) who gave a rundown of DiGregorio's re-organization. He claims that Vito DeFilippo and Joseph Notaro 'broke away' from DiGregorio and held no official positions of authority at the time. This same CI also claims that Notaro was replaced by Mike Consolo, putting him in the same crew after all. Here's what he said:
______________________________________________________________________
I just checked the book and the conversation took place on June 9, 1965. Ziccarelli says that Sabella made Capo a few days ago so it would be late May/Early June when it took place.
Not all of them but most if not all of the Capos at the time are mentioned throughout the several months of conversations.
Here is one from December 23, 1964. Notaro is refering to the Capos that were at a meeting with Joe Bonanno.
"The captains that were at the last meeting with Don Pepino (Bonanno) are me, Smitty (D'Anegelo), John Aqauro, Johnny Burns(Morales), Bill (Bonanno), Charlie Battaglia from Arizona, Frank LaBruzzo - he's a Capo representing Montreal."
Later in the conversation he IDs a Ruby Greco (most likely Louis Greco) as a Capo in Montreal but that Grecco can't come to the states because he is on Galante's indictment. He also IDs DiGregorio, Angelo Caruso, Nick Alfano and Vic from Montreal (I'm sure it is Vic Cotroni) as Capos. So it looks like Montreal had two Capos during this time.
Later on DeCavalcante asks him how many Capos are still on Bonannos side. Notaro replies "Me, Smitty, John Aquaro, Frank LaBruzzo, Charlie from Arizona, Vic from Montreal." Through some of these conversations Vito DeFilippo is also identified as a Capo and a Bonanno loyalist. During the June 7 conversation a Joe Genovese is mentioned as recently being made by DiGregorio in California. It doesn't specificly say he is a Capo but from the context that it was in that is what they were refering to.
Tony Cristi is also indentified as a members of the 9 member Committee that was breifly put in place by the Commission until the family could sort it self out so he was most likely a Capo as well.
________________________________________________________________________
-Simtty D'Angelo being the consiglieri for a few weeks before he was killed.
-Paul Scaiscia and Peter Crociata serving as Consiglieri during the late 60s.
-Both Angelo Caruso and Vito DeFilippo being demoted in 1968 for their loyalty to Bonanno.
-John Misuraca being the Colombo UnderBoss during 1963.
-Tommy Eboli and Dom "The Sailor" DeQuorto being at the scene of of the Costello hit but fled leaving Gigante in the lurch.
It also looks to clear up the Michail Consolo thing. It looks like he briefly took over Mike Sebellas Crew when Sebella left the Bonanno family during the war. Seballa looks to have taken back his Crew after Consolo was killed.

That looks accurate exept I thought John Bonventre was Bonannos first UnderBoss? I think Morales may have been too young to be a Capo at the time as well. I remember Bonanno talking about how a young morales came up as his driver in the 40s and 50s.
______________________________________________________________________
Morale was born 1912, might be too young for caporegime rank by 1930s.
Paul Sciacca was upped to Consigliere by 1966, but that doesn't mean he was a capo before. There's been quite a few cases of someone soldier rank being upped to an administration position (Eli Zeccardi, Anthony Abbatemarco, Salvatore Mineo, Benedetto D'Alessandro, etc.)
To add some more confusion on the Galante etc. crew. Pasquale Giganti is identified as having been sponsored into the Bonanno Family by John Aquaro. Giganti was a member of the Notaro/Consolo/Mari crew. Stands to reason that Aquaro was a part of this group as well at some point at least.
___________________________________________________________________
Basciano didn't take over that crew, he was given capo status and broke away from Patty D, he took his main guys with him...
___________________________________________________________________
Another caporegime under DiGregorio by 1966 was Anthony DiGiovanna.
__________________________________________________________________
I've been reading through something more closely, and it's clear to me that by Fall 1965 the setup of the Family was significant different than the one detailed in the DeCavalcante tapes. This comes from a CI who is obviously in the know (possibly Bill Bonanno himself), I'm not just pulling it out of thin air. By late 1965 this is the setup:
Gaspare DiGregorio - Boss
Peter Crociata - Underboss
Paul Sciacca - Consigliere
Joseph Notaro demoted to Soldier (Bonanno loyalist). Replaced by Mike Consolo. After Consolo had a heart attack, Frank Mari was appointed Acting and eventually official Capo. Then upped to Underboss in 1967.
Vito DeFilippo demoted to Soldier (Bonanno loyalist).
Frank LaBruzzo demoted to Soldier (Bonanno loyalist).
Michael Sabella demoted to Soldier.
Angelo Caruso probably demoted to Soldier (not as clear).
It makes sense that these guys, particularly the ones loyal to Bonanno, were broken down once DiGregorio and his administration was in place and officially backed by the other NY groups. Some of these guys were back as captains by the 1970s, which again makes sense seeing as a large part of the DiGregorio-Sciacca group either stepped down or were murdered by that time.
_________________________________________________________________
It appears that Sabella started out on DiGregorio side. On the DeCavalcante tapes Joe Ziccarelli talks about a meeting he had with DiGregorio where DiGregorio told him that Sabella was now his Capo. In one of the documents posted above it talks about how after the shooting was started Sabella fled and hooked up with Paul Vario of the Luccheses. That is probably why he was demoted.
____________________________________________________________________
As for Montreal.
In the 1960's, Vito DeFilippo was the one who was authorized to speak on behalf of "Montreal". He represented the interests of the Montreal decina here. At that time the US authorities had declared Vincenzo Cotroni persona non grata into the US in the very early 1960s because of his associations with criminal confederates. Cotroni was a capodecina appointed by Joe Bonanno.
_________________________________________________________________
The book Sixth Family had it that Greco and Cotroni were both leaders of the Montreal crew (one Sicilian one Calabrian), with Cotroni ultimately holding the official position.
____________________________________________________________________
Okay, here are a few names from the 1975 FBI list of deceased members. These are only ones I've had difficulty getting indformation on. These are just for the Bonannos but I have the others for NYC. Post the others later:
Anthony CANNZONERI
Anthony DiGIOVANNA
Angelo LAPI
Anthony LISI
Vito LICOVELLI
Anthony MESSINA
Peter PASSALAGUA
Frank PRESENZANO
Biaggio RESTIVO
Anthony SPADARO
Joseph SPADARO
(Also includes Louis Greco (Montreal), Anthony Leone (referenced in the Castellammare War) and Dominick Sabella.)
Frank Presinzano was brother of Bonanno member Moe Presinzano, said to be cousins of Carmine Galante. I believe it was in Thom's Galante story Moe was there the day Galante got killed but he left before the shooting.
Joseph Spadaro was married to Joe Bonanno's wife's sister.
Biaggio Restivo, could be related to Louis Restivo a top guy under Massino ?
Joseph Spadaro married Rose LaBruzzo. Her sister married Bonanno. He was close to Joe B. He also had a brother, Larry. The two brothers were in the garment business, in Brooklyn. Frank and Moe were cousins of Lillo.
Louis Greco is Luigi Greco who was the number 2 man in the Bonnano's Montreal faction under Vic Cotroni. As a Sicilian, he kept the peace between the Sicilian faction (Rizzuto's), and the Calabrese (Contoni's-Violi). He also apparently attended Apalachin along with Giuseppe Controni. He died in a fire at his restaurant.
Little Moe was born New York City 1-25-1908. I'm not sure where his family came from. Quite possibly. This little fishing town in north-west Sicily features strongly in the lore of the Bonanno crime family. Greco died in December 1972 while cleaning out Gina's Pizzeria. He and his brother Antoniuo were laying new tiles when a flash explosion resulted in burns to 90% of Greco's body. He died four days later in hospital. Legend has it that when a young man, out riding a horse, it threw him. He got to his feet and punched the horse so hard it collapsed! He was close to both Joe Bonanno and Galente. I cover him at my story on Galante at Mob Corner:

Tony Cristi is also indentified as a members of the 9 member Committee that was breifly put in place by the Commission until the family could sort it self out so he was most likely a Capo as well.
Forgot to indlude this. The 9 members were Gaspar DiGregorio, Peter “Skinny Pete/Little Pete” Crociata, Paul Sciacca, Frank “Musso” Mari, Angelo Caruso, Nicholas “Nick” Alfano, Joseph “Little Joe” Notaro, John Aqauro and Anthony “Tony” Cristi. They were all Capos at this time I believe. They ran things briefly in 1964 (may have lasted into 1965).

The DiGregorio faction administration is the one listed up top (recognized by the Commission). The Bonanno faction was the previous administration that was demoted (not recognized by the Commission).

B- Bonanno
U- Morales
C- S. Bonanno
The D Team:
B- DeGregorio
U- Crociata and then Mari
C-Sciacca
Bonanno claims that in 1968 (after retaking control under tensions) that he retired and left a 3 man committee, one of which was Angelo Caruso, Vito Defilippo and one other person who I can't recall.

The other one was Joe Ziccarelli I believe. Never seen this 3 man committee mentioned anywhere else though? By that time Sciacca was the Boss.

And someone replaced DiGregorio as that factions leader I believe according to either the father or son. The son- bullshit artist as he is- claims he met Frank Morales at a courthouse who was cold him because he himself started another rebel faction.Pogo The Clown wrote:The other one was Joe Ziccarelli I believe. A "nobody by the name of Paul Sciacca" according to Joe B. I've often wondered about this 3rd faction led by Johnny Morales that Bill Bonanno mentioned. Any ideas who else was part of it and what became of it?

Re: Bonanno Admin Succession
1964-1968 is just as bad, if not worse, than the last four decades of the Genoveses.
OK:
1964: JB et al are demoted.
1964/5: The 9 members were Gaspar DiGregorio, Peter “Skinny Pete/Little Pete” Crociata, Paul Sciacca, Frank “Musso” Mari, Angelo Caruso, Nicholas “Nick” Alfano, Joseph “Little Joe” Notaro, John Aqauro and Anthony “Tony” Cristi.
1964/5:
B- DiGregorio
U- Crociata - stepped down to Consig
C- Sciaccia - stepped down, later became boss.
1967:
B- DiGregorio
U- Mari
C- D'Angelo killed, replaced by:
C2- Crociata
1968:
B- DiGregorio
U-Mari killed, not replaced until 1969
C-Crociata stepped down, replaced by:
C2- Adamo
-----
Is it a point of contention over whether or not JB reclaimed the throne for a bit and then retired, leaving a panel of Caruso, DeFilippo and Ziccarelli?
Also, didn't JB claim that DiGregorio lost his will and wasn't leading the faction towards the end? Is it possible Sciacca became Acting/Interm/Street boss during the last two years (66-68) of the war?

Re: Bonanno Admin Succession
Briefly in 1963, a ruling panel was in place consisting of Morales, Tartamella and DiGregorio. When Tartamella suffered from a stroke, he was replaced by LaBruzzo. When the ruling paneö was dismantled, Bill Bonanno was made consigliere, LaBruzzo was made acting boss.
It´s debatable whether Bonanno/Morales/B. Bonanno was demoted or not because it was an illegal move made by the Commission. But DiGregorio was made boss in late 1964 or early 1965, Pete Crociata was made underboss and Paul Sciacca consigliere. The three of them were recognized by the Commission.
In 1966, DiGregorio stepped down, Sciacca was made boss. Not sure who the consigliere was but Tommy "Smitty" D´Angelo held this place briefly before he was killed in Nov 1967. Pete Crociata (the underboss) replaced him as consigliere. Frank mari was made underboss. So in late 1967 Sciacca was boss, Mari underboss, Crociata consigliere.
In 1968, Crociata was shot and stepped down. He was replaced by Mike Adamo.
In 1969, Sciacca stepped down and according to informant, Mari and Adamo made a power move and was killed for it. Evola was made boss, Rastelli was made underboss and Nick Alfano was made consigliere.
Bonanno says Angelo Caruso was part of a three man committee until a new boss could be chosen. He doesn´t name the other two and it´s unclear when it was in place. But I assume it was right after he left for Tucson. It´s possible Alfano and Sciacca were the other two.

1) What the reason for this 1963 ruling panel?HairyKnuckles wrote:Briefly in 1963, a ruling panel was in place consisting of Morales, Tartamella and DiGregorio. 2) It was, in JB's book he gives the names Caruso, DeFilippo and Ziccarelli. I can take a picture if you'd like.
3) Was John Petrone acting consig for Tartamella in the 60's?

1. I think it was because JB spent more time in Arizona. If memory serves, he also traveled a lot around this time.Chris Christie wrote:1) What the reason for this 1963 ruling panel?HairyKnuckles wrote:Briefly in 1963, a ruling panel was in place consisting of Morales, Tartamella and DiGregorio. 2. I missed/overlooked it. No need for picture.
3. I don´t know. One of two refereneces on Petrone holding an administration spot is this: "Within a very short period of time of Bonanno´s disappearance, many of his family approached Gambino and wanted to come into the Gambino family. Bonanno appointed a consigliere in his absence, one John "Bennett" Petrone. Petrone promptly came to Carlo Gambino and asked him what to do. Gambino told Petrone to play along with Bonanno."
This doesn´t make any sense to me. First because Bonanno never told anybody where he was hiding. Not even his son knew where he was. Bonanno members thought he was dead. So this doesn´t rhyme with "Bonanno appointed a consigliere in his absence". And secondly, Bill Bonanno was the consigliere at the time of JB´s disappearance, why would he appoint a consigliere when his son had been selected to this position in 1963 (Bonanno dissappeared in 1964.) The only thing that makes sense is that Petrone was apponted acting consigliere by Bill Bonanno while Bill was incarcerated for three months in 1965.
The second reference I´ve seen is Konigsberg claiming that "Morales is underboss" and that his predecessor was Carmine Galante. He also claimed that "Galante´s predecessor was John Petrone". This would mean that Petrone held the underboss spot shortly in the 1950s. But again, this doesn´t make any sense to me since Galante was never underboss to Bonanno.
