@ Friendofhenry
You totally misunderstood UTC's post.
He actually brought up a decent point.
Your average wiseguy is probably extremely limited in his knowledge of greater family operations. A typical wiseguy probably knows surprisingly little out side of his immediate neighbourhood and crew.
Hell, a lot of Westside guys probably only knew who their Capo was and had no idea who the admin was when they were using the rotating panel.
Do you think your average wiseguy in the Bronx is going to be clued in to what family operations a jersey crew has going on? Or vice versa?
These guys don't get a yearbook of members and criminal operations on their way out the door after getting their fingers pricked.
The overwhelming information we have is from LE and rats.
If you're taking about admin memebers of course that's a different story. But your run of the mill soldier probably has quite limited scope of knowledge of greater mafia affairs.
So in sarcastically answering UTC, you've missed the point of what he was trying to say.

I don't think FOH missed his "point" at all. Of course we know wiseguys would have extremely limited knowledge about things outside of their immediate area and connections, however things that may have been wrong, are then later corrected by another wiseguy and becomes fact and later on, history. However UTC's statement as far as street guys being the worst source of information, it isn't entirely true. Most of what we know today came from street guys, you want reliable info on something, it's the street guys who fill in those blanks because they live it. Most of the feds information comes from street guys, not news articles and researchers or bloggers. So in all actuality, they're the best sources of information, but of course, it takes more than one source to actually get those "facts".

UTCs point is correct. A perfect example is Lefty Ruggiero. He thought Carmine Galante was the Boss which was false, he thought Frank Balistriere was the top Boss in the Midwest which was totally wrong and he also thought NY killed Angelo Bruno because he wanted AC all to himself which was again totally off the mark. And he was a made guy who had been around a long time. Imagine how much more limited and incorrect his knowledge would have been if he were not made or just a "neighborhood guy". Really unless you are a high ranking member or a well connected longtime Soldier (like Valachi) you will not be privy to the high level inner workings of the organization. A lot of what these low level guys hear is second, third and fourth hand stuff, often times distorted, half truths or just plain wrong to begin with.

@OlBlueeyes
FOH was pointing out a bullshit comparison which is what I was taking issue with.
He was saying what is/are better sources of information? Wise guys or Wikipedia/Overseas posters?
Which is completely not what UTC was trying to say, as I, and Pogo to a much better degree, illustrated above.

With the five families sometimes that is true... But then on the other hand you had men like Greg scarpa who gave the Feds info on where tony ducks was talking buisness... I guess it all depends on how much buisness you do and how many dif ppl you get mixed up with...SonnyBlackstein wrote:@ Friendofhenry

Wow, I certainly didn't have any intentions to be argumentative, only to add some of my off-the wall humor. However I lived in a most unusual set of circumstances. How many out of the "family" teenagers spent as much real casual time with "real guys" as I did? I was just trying to call attention to the fact that some of the most acurate information comes from some real people that may or may not have been personally involved. All of that being said: I also understand that most smaller families, like Pittsburgh, were not quite as isolated at the top as were the larger families.

Thanx, but I didn't take anything personal. What the hell: "It's only business" I was just saying that "street people" can and do add plenty of very interesting info that can't be found in many other places. Fortunately we have "quite a few of these people that are willing to share.

I apologize if my post came off as overly firm. No offence intended given it's now clear your posts were intended to be humorous and not sarcastic.

It reminds me of a very large group of Italians that gathered for a function and I remember a couple of Made Guys say.
"Everybody thinks they're the Don here" another said "People who talk don't know and the people that do know Don't Talk".
Just thinking
Son-of-a-Bitch I miss those guys...

I was offering a different perspective on things for consideration.
