Must the other families ask NY ok to made members ?
The American mafia had only 10 active families today. The 5 families, philly, the decavalcante, patriarca, detroit and the chicago outfit.
After the Apalachin meeting the commission split in 2 with the Outfit that ruled on the West coast families and New York on the east coast families.
I don't understand why NY put a freeze on Cleveland e Pittsburgh but after the mob lost a grip on the unions and the families relations changed must the east coast families send to NY the names of wannabe to be made ? And if yes to all the families or only on the genoveses that are the most powerful? Or in the 2016 all the viable families bosses do what they want ?
Thanks

The smaller families could make whoever they want. For a period Cleveland had to get an OK to make new members but that was a mere formality and I don't think it extended to the other families.

Furio brought up this question on the GBB which also extended to Philadelphia having to vet their members with NY in the past, Pittsburgh freezed of making new members, etc.Pogo The Clown wrote:The smaller families could make whoever they want. I was under the impression that all the smaller Families had to bring it to either the New York Commission representatives except for those who are under Chicago's authority. The one Family that doesn't have to report to New York or Chicago was New Orleans because of its status as the original American Mafia Family.

I think it was only for the North Jersey guys as a matter of courtesy (according to George Freselone they didn't have to do this). In Philly they made whoever they wanted. They made guys throughout the 60s when the books were closed in NY.

Re: Must the other families ask NY ok to made members ?
There are cases where Philly had to ask NY approval to open their books, but aside from the North Jersey crew I don't believe they had to get approval on specific proposed members since NY wouldn't know most of them anyway. That seems to be the case for other small families as well though I don't know if it was always the case or only during specific periods. In the early 1960s for example Philly got chastised by NY for making members, as NY had wanted the books closed (at least on the east coast) after Valachi flipped.

It didn't come out that Chucky Porter was cooperating until his lawyers went to the U.S. Attorney's office in 1999 with the request of a sentence reduction. Mike stopped making guys after Henry in 1989, coincidentally, the same year Chucky Porter and Lou Raucci were indicted. And Mike made Henry to take over for Chucky. If Mike truly wanted to, The Genovese Family in NYC would have okayed it considering he lost top guys to prosecution...but it was more $$$ for Mike Genovese and that's all he cared about. They actually froze membership in 1989 when an affadvit came out that Phil Leonetti was the next mob star witness. The collapse of Youngstown didn't happen until 1999, a decade after Porter was indicted.phatmatress777 wrote:They were froze after chuckle Porter was found to be cooperating and the collapse of Youngstown with strollofuriofromnaples wrote:Wiseguys given that most forum members believe to be better than GBB forum, I think "Damn if are so smart maybe can answer better to my question apart say pittsburgh freeze making new members ecc and maybe say if now in 2016 the small family must ask the NY ok".Wiseguy wrote:Furio brought up this question on the GBB which also extended to Philadelphia having to vet their members with NY in the past, Pittsburgh freezed of making new members, etc.Pogo The Clown wrote:The smaller families could make whoever they want. In the 1980's, Pittsburgh lost the follwoing longtime members to death:
Deaths during the 1980's LaRocca Crime Family
• Gabriel "Kelly" Mannarino died July
11, 1980. Mannarino was a capo in
the Family and was considered the
most active member in the Family
before his death. He had ties to the
Bufalino LCN Family. He was indicted
with boss Sebastian John LaRocca in
1969 for conspiracy on a loan kickback
scheme from the Teamsters
Central States Pension Fund. Both
were acquitted. Mannarino's areas of
control, Westmoreland County and
Youngstown, OH, were inherited by
Thomas Ciancutti and Joseph Naples,
respectively.
• Frank J. Rosa died January 28,
1982. He was a former capo in the
Family and was convicted of extortion
in 1975. He was never jailed because
of his poor health. His principal
activities were prostitution and illegal
numbers. His "territory" was inherited
by Frank D. Amato, Jr.
• John C. Fontana died April 1,
1984. He was a soldier in the LCN
Family and was formerly involved in
gambling centered in the Monroeville
area of Western Pennsylvania. His
illegal activity was inherited by Frank
D. Amato, Jr.
Sebastian John laRocca died December
3, 1984. He headed the
Southwestern Pennsylvania La Cosa
Nostra Family from 1956 until his
death. LaRocca gained control of the Pittsburgh
numbers rackets in the 1940s
and, at one time, financed and controlled
several gambling casinos in
West Virginia's Panhandle. Until his
death, LaRocca operated the Allegheny
Car Wash, 100 Sandusky Avenue,
Pittsburgh, where he met
regularly with LCN Family members
and associates. Michael Genovese
became boss after LaRocca's death.
• Samuel J. Fashionatta. also known
as Sammy fashion, died March 11,
1985. He was involved in gambling
activity in the Altoona and Johnstown
areas. Fashion was a close associate
of John "Jack" Verilla. Fashion
assisted Verilla in the distribution of
football betting slips in Blair County.
• Joseph "little Joe" Regino died
June 18, 1985. Regino operated
gambling enterprises in Johnstown
and owned Keystone Sales Company.
• Joseph N. Pecora died March 3,
1 987. He was a former underboss of
the LaRocca/Genovese LCN Family
who operated LaRocca's gambling
enterprises in West Virginia. Pecora
was convicted of racketeering and in
1979 was sentenced to five years in
prison.
• Louis Volpe died June 3, 1987.
Volpe, of East McKeesport, had been
an inactive member during the mid 1980's
but was called on for advice and counsel as
was evident that he attended the meeting with Scarfo
and Leonetti in Monroeville
• John "Jack" Michael Verilla died
September 10, 1988. He reported to
the New Kensington faction of the
Family which was headed by Gabriel
Mannarino and later by Thomas Ciancutti.

What does Phil leonetti have to do with anything... I've always read that the freezing period was after the collapse of Youngstown and also when Porter was found to be cooperating ... Re: Must the other families ask NY ok to made members ?
So jcb1977 Pittsburgh family died because Mike Genovese stop making guys (but there was people to made ?) for the money and not because NY put a freeze ? Wasnt stupid to do this choice ?It didn't come out that Chucky Porter was cooperating until his lawyers went to the U.S. Attorney's office in 1999 with the request of a sentence reduction. Re: Must the other families ask NY ok to made members ?
What is your source? Where did you always read that? The freeze happened around 1989 after Zottola got buttoned to fill in for Chucky. And Leonetti had a lot to do with it after Porter's lawyers got confirmation that Leonetti was fully cooperting with the Feds and would be one of the key witnesses against Porter. Mike Genovese also was worried about Joe Sica, Louis Volpe and Henry due to the fact that they were all at that meeting with Scarfo and Leonetti in Monroeville. Genovese made 5 guys between 1986-1989 to replenish some of the elder members who had died off. This information comes directly from the Pittsburgh FBI office. After Leonetti decided to cooperate fully, families who were dealing with Philadelphia went running for the hills as NOBODY thought Phil would ever testify.phatmatress777 wrote:What does Phil leonetti have to do with anything...
