Also, what's Porter's mafia resume? I believe I read a very long time ago that he was made by Genovese and instantly made under. I honestly know very little about the man other than his name.

Re: Chucky Porter dead
It was always an Italian area up until the 80s sometimes when other races started moving in and by 92 they were putting housing projects in larimer. Interesting I never would have thought of turtle creek as a hotbed but I trust your research. A lot of people wouldn't really consider that Pittsburgh it's pretty far out. But yes he was made in 86/87 and was immediately made underboss. Had tons and tons of money with cocaine with his brother billy and nick the blade. I believe he also owned some parking garages in downtown but I may be wrong about that. I think it's safe to say his main source of income was with the coke. Which is where a lot of people get the misconception that Genovese encouraged drug dealing with everyone but that was not true.Chris Christie wrote:I study my own stuff in regards to Pittsburgh, Larimer Ave is an area I'm totally unfamiliar with. How far back was this place the hotbed of Pittsburgh? I'm guessing by the 60's that Sharpsburg and Turtle Creek were no longer epicenters?

And, for what it's worth: it's good to see three local guys (JCB, Phat, Friend) discussing their area. Not to be too sentimental but seeing such dilapidation today on areas that half a century ago is truly a sad sight. Those of you born before 1980 are fortunate to remember a world that no longer exists.

Taking from jcbs suggestion I think I will start a thread of pics of the dilapidation of some of the areas. The bad areas of Pittsburgh white people can go into because the blacks wants to sell you drugs so it's doubtful you would be harmed during the day. It's the cops looking to bust you that you have to worry about. I got some good pics of some of the industrial remaining places when I was in Youngstown.

I'll bet you have some pics while driving down Wilson Ave. Hard to believe that this now decimated area was home for thousands of workers

Made me very sad... These great places...like Pittsburgh doesn't even look the same as it did when I graduated high school almost 20 years ago.. I loved the older style in favor of this generfication bullshit they are doing... Everything looks the same ... I wish the steel mills were still covering the buildings with soot and the white collar workers had to bring 2 shirts to work because they're white shirts got so dirty from the airFriendofHenry wrote:phatmatress777 wrote:Taking from jcbs suggestion I think I will start a thread of pics of the dilapidation of some of the areas. Re: Chucky Porter dead
Porter only testified at his own trial in 1990 and perjured himself over 100 times. According to SA Roger Greenbank, because of his perjury while testifying in his own defense, they chose not to put him on the stand against anybody else because a defense lawyer would have crucified his credibility. He gave the Feds info that made it easy for them to target and indict other members in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Scranton and Detroit. His info helped the Feds get Jack Tocco, Sonny Ciancutti, Lenny Strollo and the Youngstown contingent as well as members in NYC, New England, Chicago and NJ.
Porter made is first million through gambling. He ran the Beacon Club in Squirrel Hill and ran several of Kelly Mannarino's casinos. He was Kelly's guy until Kelly died in 1980 of cancer and then Michael Genovese brought him to his faction of the family. By 1981, he was moving a boatload of Coke through Ramon Sosa & Michael Rosenfeld in Miami Beach. Chucky wasn't dealing, he had Joey Rosa (son of Capo Joe Rosa and grandson of Consigliere Joe Sica), Genovese Chiarelli, Billy Porter, Paul Hankish in Wheeling, Joseph Bertone, Gary DeStefano, William Prosdocimo, Melvin Pike, Eugene Gesuale, Paul Mazzei (The Pittsburgh connection in Goodfellas) as well as a several others. Genovese knew where the $$ was coming from but warned Chucky to insulate himself.
Porter's main source of income prior to narcotics was his gambling operation at the Brookline Men's Club.

Few people kept in touch with him. Some neighborhood people said they understood why he did it and it was because he loved his family first and foremost which is why the Feds were confident they could get him to talk. His daughter Tiffany is smoking hot and all of his kids were successful. Sonny Casale stayed in close touch with him, but Sonny wasn't made or even considered a high ranking associate.JeremyTheJew wrote:Jcb-

@Chris Christie- Larimer Ave settled in the 1890's by Italians but truly became "The" Italian enclave between 1920-1950. The Italians started moving out around 1971 when the steel industry collapsed and the rift raft started occupying the neighborhood.

Moio's bakery is now off Rt. 22 in Monroeville. Henry never drove by that he didn't stop for a box of "goodies"

Re: Chucky Porter dead
The 1920's was an interesting decade in terms of the Italian demographic. With increasing funds many migrated out of the slums and went into higher end neighborhoods. The Italy our ancestors came from had no concept of rent because living quarters were provided by whom you worked for. In 1897 on Elizabeth St in Lower Manhattan a group of Siggies got their bitch on over $5 monthly rent and a riot almost broke out onto Hester. So many saved up and later on bought property. You seen this in most Italian areas, a sorta secondary migration to better areas. I don't know what Larimar was like during the 1890's - 1950's but I'd be willing to bet that the influx of southern blacks into the Hill and Hazelton and maybe Glenwood sent the Italo-concentration east to Larimar. If you guys want to have a thread related to Pitts, I'm game. I'm interested in seeing some of these neighborhoods past and present.JCB1977 wrote:Excellent topic Phat, so many rust belt areas that were OC havens that went to shit:phatmatress777 wrote:Taking from jcbs suggestion I think I will start a thread of pics of the dilapidation of some of the areas. Re: Chucky Porter dead
Every northern industrial city looks like those pictures now thanks to NAFTA and crooked politicians,Ohio is the same way and it is sad cause alot of those jobs were decent paying blue collar jobs,my Dad and Grandfather both had jobs like those until they moved across the border.
