Great stuff as always JD. We're Anthony Seccafico and Jack Bonventre among those 16 made during that period? I seem to recall reading that.

Also were you ever able to find out who was on the ruling panel in 2008-2009/10 besides Joseph Sammartino? Thanks.

From everything you've seen, is there any indication whether Sal Montagna was made before or after the Sciascia hit? Cicale's info indicates before but he doesn't straight say that he was made, only that Massino wanted to gauge his reaction to the murder and then put him under DeFilippo.

Scarpo wrote as follows in his Cosa Nostra News: The Cicale Files, Volume 1: Inside the Last Great Mafia Empire: "Salvatore 'Sal the Iron Worker' Montagna held dual citizenship in Italy and Canada, and was a soldier in the Bonanno crime family at the time of Massino's ascension to the top." Scarpo seems to suggest here, then, that Montagna was made by at least 1991 if not earlier, which means Montagna would have been made, at the latest, at 20 or 21 years of age. I did wonder whether Scarpo meant to write Basciano's ascension to the top, but by the time Basciano became acting boss, Montagna had become an acting capo (and, according to the book, Massino wanted Basciano to demote Montagna).

Five paragraphs after the sentence/paragraph I quoted, we learn from Cicale that after the murder of Sciascia (in March 1999), "[t]he members of [Sciascia's] crew were spread around to various capos. Montagna was specifically placed in Patty DeFilippo's crew so the trusted lieutenant could keep watch."

Cicale indicated that Sciascia and Montagna were close friends, and this does seem to me to be corroborated by the fact that the two dead mobsters' wives -- Mary MacFadyen Sciascia and Francesca (Carcione) Montagna -- are Facebook friends. I mentioned in an earlier post that I've been working on a family tree for Gerlando Sciascia; while Ancestry.com has been helpful, I have to acknowledge that Facebook has been even more helpful, as it has allowed me to figure out who some of Sciascia's living relatives are, how they are all related, which ones live in New York state, and which ones live in Quebec. Please feel free to ask me questions about the family tree now rather than waiting for me to post it in the future.

Facebook is a great tool for discovering relations and close family friendships between these people. A Facebook friendship between Sciascia and Montagna's wives is very telling considering all of the other context. I can't think of any obvious questions to ask about his family tree, only whether you've found ties to other well-known names in NY and Montreal.

Since that bit about Montagna being a soldier since Massino's ascension comes from Scarpo and not Cicale, I wouldn't put too much stock into it. Sounds like typical entertainment journalist writing... Massino's "ascension" could just refer to when he began to firmly establish his power in the mid-late 90s, if it even means anything.

Unless JD has some info about Montagna being made later, it does seem likely he was made sometime before March 1999. With the amount of influence Sciascia had and Massino's interest in getting young loyal guys into the family, it's not hard to believe Sciascia could sponsor a ~25-year-old Montagna without much trouble.

The question I have now is how Montagna hooked up with Sciascia. Obviously they were both zips with strong ties to both Montreal, NY, and Sicily, but they were not paesani (that we know of -- it's not clear whether Montagna's parents were both from CDG, if only one of them was, or if they simply moved there after Montreal and were originally from a different Sicilian town, etc.). Given how tight the Sicilian network is and their common ground in those three places, it seems like there could be deeper ties that led Montagna into Sciascia's orbit. My guess though would be Baldo Amato, who Montagna was said to be friends with and shared a CDG connection with him, not to mention Amato's close friendship with his "compare" Sciascia.

Very interesting guys. It's pretty amazing how Montagna was mocked and downplayed just a few years ago while it's now becoming evident that he had deep, extensive ties and dealings. I think these connections are the reason for his quick rise through the ranks, and his quick assimilation into Montreal affairs. As for me, I've always felt that he was much more important than believed by some, even though I had limited evidence to provide.

Was Sciascia related to former Boss Paul Sciascia?

Probably had a panel going as well with Vitale and others.

I know you made this list before getting the other info you shared in this topic, but you mentioned earlier that Cammarano was only proposed for membership as of the early 90s. Was he promoted to captain immediately after being made or was there someone else in that captain spot in 1991?
