Of course Licata is discussing events before his time so he might not be 100% correct, but it sounds possible that Caponigro and Luciano were originally Gambino associates under Anastasia in NJ who were transferred to be with Philadelphia (worth noting that Anastasia and Caponigro were both Calabrian and Anastasia was close to the Calabrians Joe Ida and Joe Rugnetta; not sure about Luciano's heritage). Can't ignore that Caponigro spent most of his teenage years in Philadelphia, though, so there is still a connection that we may not know of.
I like how you bring up the fact that they were both Calabrese( that's what we call Calabrians) Not too many people realize that WHERE you come from in Italy/Sicily was so very important years ago. Not sure about nowadays but years ago, they'd stick with their own.

Licata was made by Scarfo in '86, and I think Scarfo was made by Ida but I could be wrong.

In the second conversation you mentioned, does Mitarotonda say anything noteworthy?

Not from the memo, but a couple years back JerryB posted the audio from the trial and Mitarotonda mentioned to Licata and Fazzini that a guy named "Jimmy Balls" taking over the Gambino NJ faction once he got out of prison, I think I remember people figuring that was Vincent DiModica.

They could be right about DiModica, but I recall some other context from the conversation that implied "Jimmy Balls" had been in prison much longer than DiModica (not sure on that, though). It's worth noting that Vincent "Jimmy Balls" Beltempo was a Gambino associate who served an extensive prison sentence for importing heroin with zips from Palermo. After getting out of prison, he moved to Park Ridge, NJ. So if he got made, he very well could be the guy since the Gambino/NJ connection matches up. Plus he may have the respect of the Sicilian faction in the family through his heroin dealings.

For Scarfo, yep he got made in the mid-1950s when Joe Ida was boss. Others in that ceremony were Joe, Mike, and Anthony Piccolo, maybe others. It's interesting Scarfo got made just a year or two after Angelo Bruno.

Pretty sure this came up before, but Bruno once admitted over a listening device that he was inducted circa 1951.

Yeah, he says he had been a member for 12 years to Magliocco in 1963, though an informant (Riccobene?) said he was "positive" Bruno wasn't made as of 1952 and felt it was closer to 1955 when Mike Maggio sponsored him. The problem with conversations is these guys might not have done the math in their head and are just casually throwing out a general number. I would bet he was made earlier than 1955, though.

Scarfo told Leonetti he (Scarfo) was made when he was 25, so Scarfo was likely made in 1954, or early 1955.

Its possible that Beltempo could take over the old Newark Gambino crew... But I don't really know what is left of it. It was depleted since Cabert when down. Never really regained its membership since those convictions. Merola's rag tag Crew was a clear sign of that. Also Nicky Skins reporting to Brooklyn was a another clear sign of lack leadership in Newark for the Gambino's. Nicky Skins was a longtime Newark/Belleville guy. Gambino's have lost allot of their rackets in Newark and N Jersey to the Luchese, Philly Crew and Genovese. Especially the gambling rackets. Merola's book was really small time.
