My thinking is 'sons' plural might be a typo or transcribed wrong and he may have just said 'son' and is referring to Charlie Majuri, the son of former leader Frank Majuri. Jealous over seeing a rival Newark based captain become a Boss could be the reason Licata expressed astonishment and distain.B. wrote: Pogo -- I figure the sons might be Joe and Michael Merlo, though I don't know of their father ever being more than a soldier.

Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
I don't think Charles Majuri was ever Newark based.

It's a new morning in America... fresh, vital. The old cynicism is gone. We have faith in our leaders. We're optimistic as to what becomes of it all. It really boils down to our ability to accept. We don't need pessimism. There are no limits.
Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
Majuri in a leadership is nothing new, though. Been a captain and was part of the ruling panel a long time ago, so I don't think Licata would be surprised by that.
The Majuris were originally based out of Elizabeth / Union County and have lived in Clark and Linden. Never seen anything to indicate Charlie ever lived farther north. It's possible he has had rackets in Newark proper but I don't know. Rocco on here can't seem to let it go and insists that Majuri is a Newark guy.

Keep in mind too that at the time of this recording John Riggi was alive and still in prison. He may have designated some members to lead that have since been demoted since his death for the reasons stated by Scoops. It only says new power / leadership, so it may not have been administration but captains, too. Another thing the Merlos would have in their favor is their relation to the Riggis.

Joe Corozzo and DiMaria are out, Nick Corozzo has til 2020.
Other guys at the Philly meeting were Joe Gambino, Lorenzo Mannino, and Michael Roccaforte. Then there was the second meeting with Licata and Fazzini with Mitarotonda.

Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
Some other stuff...
On October 21, 2010, cooperating witness Nicholas Stefanelli recorded a meeting with Joseph Licata and Louis Fazzini, during which Licata recounted a “beef” he had with Massimino. (Government Exhibit 1-18, Segment 4). Licata discussed how Anthony Proto, a “capo” in the New York Gambino LCN Family sent a message to “Mousie” through the Romano brothers without going through Licata. LICATA told Proto not to send messages to Philadelphia unless he went through Licata. Licata added that he confronted Massimino about this breach of LCN protocol: “We don’t need nobody insulted. I told that to Mou - Mousie. I said Mouse, we don’t want that.” Licata told Ligambi about his “beef with Massimino, and Ligambi admonished Massimino at the LCN Christmas Party, telling Massimino: “You want to be friends with ‘em, you keep ‘em to yourself. Don’t bring him to me.” According to Joaquin Garcia, the government’s LCN expert, this conversation demonstrates that Massimino ranked higher than Licata, who was “capo.” Licata was angry because Proto bypassed Licata and contacted his superior, Massimino, directly, which undermined Licata’s position as a captain.
In March 2004, Massimino went to prison in New Jersey. Before going to prison, Massimino told Buscemi that Gaeton Lucibello would be collecting the “street tax” payments after Massimino went to jail. Because Buscemi was a friend of Lucibello’s nephew, Raymond Wagner, Buscemi was able to reduce the amount of the “street tax” to $5,000 per month. In 2004 and 2005, Buscemi paid $5,000 to Lucibello. In 2006, Buscemi paid $5,000 to Wagner to give to Lucibello.
Massimino wrote a prison letter to Rosenberg requesting that Rosenberg to “do me a favor.” Massimino asked Rosenberg to pass a threatening message on to Jerry Iamurri that Massimino wanted his $35,000.00. Specifically, the letter to Archie Rosenberg stated: Get in touch with Michael [Michael Curro] and tell him to tell his mother [wife of Jerry Iamurri] to tell her husband that he better get my fucken money. I don’t care who the fuck he owes he better get mine. This mother fucker owes me 35,000. I don’t care if he has to rob a bank. He fucken better get my money. He would of never did what he did if Crutch was around. He waited for him to die. That bald headed mother fucker. I’m tired of the stories and bullshit. He won’t be able to hide anywhere in the U.S. Tell him to get on this for me. If you write me watch what you say. They read everything that comes to me.... Get on this for me Arch. Tell Michael I need him to step up for me.
LICATA tells the Gambino members that the Philadelphia LCN Family always had a crew in North Jersey and Trenton going back to the time of Angelo Bruno. LICATA explains that he is now the caporegime of this crew, is content with that, and has no aspirations to be anything more (consigliere, underboss or boss): “I don't want no… Caporegime - I'm happy with that. That's it. I don't want no… that belongs to them. I'll help them up here.”
LICATA extolled Caponigro and Dominick “Louie” Luciano, a Philadelphia LCN soldier, as real gangsters who were regularly used to commit mob murders by Albert Anastasia (former boss of the New York Gambino LCN Family) and Frank Costello (former boss of the Genovese New York LCN Family). LICATA stated that Anastasia put them with Angelo Bruno (former boss of the Philadelphia LCN Family) so they wouldn’t get killed. Both Caponigro and Luciano were ultimately the victims of mob murders, but LICATA, JG, and CW agreed that “you can’t replace those guys.”

Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
Great stuff, Chucky! I never realized that Anastasia used Dom Louie Luciano to do hits. I was wondering why he wasn't part of the Genovese's or Gambinos since he's living right there in Jersey, makes sense now. I know that they say the Campisis took him out. They said that they got permission from Carlo Gambino to take Luciano out because he allegedly murdered their sister. They were romantically involved or something to that effect.
Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
Wow. Of course Licata is discussing events before his time so he might not be 100% correct, but it sounds possible that Caponigro and Luciano were originally Gambino associates under Anastasia in NJ who were transferred to be with Philadelphia (worth noting that Anastasia and Caponigro were both Calabrian and Anastasia was close to the Calabrians Joe Ida and Joe Rugnetta; not sure about Luciano's heritage). Can't ignore that Caponigro spent most of his teenage years in Philadelphia, though, so there is still a connection that we may not know of.
Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
Interesting about the street tax. It seems it still exists but not as widespread or as aggressive as the Scarfo years.Chucky wrote:In March 2004, Massimino went to prison in New Jersey. it could just mean loan sharking money
Sorry. Wrong Frank
Re: Joseph Licata Detention Memo - Interesting Notes
One thing to add that I forgot, according to Licata, Massimino resented him after he beefed to Ligambi about the Proto thing and when Ligambi dressed him down, he did it in front of other made members which embarrassed Massimino.
