John Riggi Retirement Party Surveillance Report

Post by sdeitche »

About two years ago, or so, I was gifted a massive trove of Jersey mob reports and investigative files. I went through a lot of it during my Catena book (though the material is primarily late 70s to early 90s, so not a ton on Jerry). Ill post some interesting finds.

This report was pretty cool. Surveillance report from Union County investigators.

What was he retiring from? Was this retirement from his legit job or a mafia retirement? I know almost nothing about the Decav's but the latter doesn't really make sense since i believe he was Boss for a lot longer just making sure. If it was a "legit" job it's hilarious that they weren't passing up a celebration related to a job he likely didn't work in reality.

Thanks Scott.

He was retiring as business agent of Local 394. The union was corrupt but Riggi absolutely worked and many/most of the DeCavalcantes had legitimate jobs or owned businesses.

I'm aware some mobster legitimately worked just didn't think this would be one of those cases. Thanks.

it's weird I'm friendly with my business agent. he's constantly calling meeting with subcontractors and general contractor trying to get jobs for members of our local. I mean it's alot of traveling to lunches and alot of phone calls but he working. it's a cool gig I think. I can't imagine owners of company's having riggi call them like hey I got 30 guys laid off your taking 6 of them put them to work or else.... or even when he pulls up to the company's headquarters. Just to talk work. imagine how they rolled out the red carpet for him in some greesy garage/office. secretary grandmother runs out and gets him cookies or coffee. they say wild bill was a BA to of some trade. I mean it's perfect for a guy who can talk . you got to put atleast 6 hours a day to it half a day friday...

Spot on same with my experience. A good rep is a likeable guy - most of these mob guys in the unions were guys you wanted to be around. A lot made you feel like they were getting the better jobs and treated their members and locals well. You just had to ignore the guys getting kickbacks and knowing they are buying boats and lakehouses while you are still grinding
