I like Scott and I do appreciate that he will retract and apologize when he gets shit wrong. However: It happens too often and after a while it devalues the retraction and the sincerity of his mea culpa.

Isn't the rule of thumb that one source is not enough to publish? There should be at least two sources confirming a story, especially when you declare someone dead ffs!

This isn't only on Scott but the whole "mob reporting scene"..
He actually covers all this in the article. There's nothing really self-serving in it. It's a pretty honest self-assessment.

"Bobby Manna died!"

"Who's your source?"

"The internet!"..
Most of the time when a person dies we learn about it from a single source. Take celebrities, for example. We usually learn about their deaths from a single surviving spouse or child, or their manager or publicist. For crime figures, their deaths may or may not have an obituary (which cost several hundred dollars), or maybe a relative writes something about them on their Facebook page. In the latter case, we don't always know how reliable the source is. Or maybe there's a confidential source who could be an associate or mob soldier who has to get their information from another inside source, who may have had their info passed down from still another source. Until several years ago we could look up deaths on the Social Security Death Index, but the government cut off access because it was being used for identity theft, which took away a valuable resource. So finding out someone's death isn't as easy as it used to be.

From now on, we should just wait for the BOP Inmate locator to confirm if a person behind bars is deceased

I'll give Scott credit for the mea culpa. Whether it's legacy or new media, it seems the temptation to be first often overpowers the need for accuracy. Funny thing is, considering Manna's age and health, would could be back to these threads with him really dead in a month.

I just read it. Kudos to Scott for writing it and making it accessible. Let's hope he adheres to it from now on. At least he has the ambition to be serious. The mobtubers I have less hope for.

Scott's miss rate has been far too high to be taken seriously imo, this has been coming but fair play to him for owning this and being honest. Hopefully he can do better going forward

Yes I think the apology is maybe too little too late, but - that being said - it takes balls to man up and admit you're wrong and I believe him when he says he is genuinely going to try and do better in the future. I think he is a positive contribution to Mafia journalism, even if I think the "power ranking" stuff a little bit sappy.

Im more surprised pennisi jumped on this. Hes usually pretty good at verifying sources but i guess it sounds like this one came from an odd source who “should” have known

I mean what other choice did he really have other than to admit he was wrong? He was clearly wrong, people knew it. This apology is simple to save face for him being called out for making stuff up and stealing news from the forum. Don't think this took balls at all. It was his only option.

Still waiting on the news from the Joey Baldino shoot out in philly, and breaking into Phil Narducci's house. When are those two stories going to come out in detail?

I don't know how many subscribers he has, but I assume that the majority of them aren't on the Black Hand or Gangster BB, most of them probably wouldn't have known any different if he didn't correct himself.

I’ve never really been able to form any opinion on SB, but I respect him being up front about his mistake and others in the article. Good on him.

He mentioned that there was a shoot out involving Baldino's people, during the whole brawl situation. But he said he was going to wait for other philly reporters to report it first but he had a story on it. Never heard of it again.

There was a shootout involving Baldino s boy and Chang’s nieces boyfriend “red” Mazza . There was a break in at Phil Narducci s residence the week before . I have both police reports . So do Dave & GA. There are other reasons we went silent publicly. But sure , keep getting your Philly news from propagandists and spinsters like Nadu .
