Keep in mind even if he didn't flip he would've been responsible for one of the greatest collapses of a mafia family of all time. In deciding to shelve Vitale, his resultant flipping lead to numerous others rolling and hundreds of convictions.

So he wasn't just responsible for their growth, he was also responsible for their collapse.

So maybe not one of the greats.

Edit: A Strong argument could be made that it was predominantly The Bonnanos exclusion from the commission which was in large part the cause of their growth in the 80's and 90's. This enabled them to avoid convictions in the commission and concrete club cases etc. and stay off the feds radar.

How much Massino is responsible for the Bonannos 'success' in the close of last century is up for debate. personally I think very little, yet very responsible for their downfall.

It's strange to me that he doesn't get lumped in with guys like Nicky Scarfo and Albert Anastasia when it comes to the whole "bloodthirsty" reputation. I suppose a difference is that Scarfo and Anastasia were accomplished "hitmen" themselves before they became boss and seem to have taken pride in ordering murders, whereas Massino allegedly pitched lines like "all life is precious" when he wasn't killing off all of his competition. The facts still show that Massino liked to use the gun as his bargaining chip.

Sonny I agree that the bonnanos getting kicked off the commission did help them build and regroup but massino was an integral part of there growth , what he did building the family up was nothing short of phenomenal after the internal wars and the Donnie Brasco affair , he deserves credit for that

There was the Rastelli/Massino indictment plus the Pizza Connection which was focused on the Bonanno zip crew. Some other smaller indictments of members/associates too but can't think of them offhand.

kind of out of the five families at that time they were the least worried about. They also targeted the Colombos and the Bonanos with joe Pistone bc they knew they could infiltrate those 2 families as opposed to the others.
