Thomas Carew testimony notes during a Lucchese Capo’s May, 1994 trial (Carew was close with Christie Tick and Chiodo

Post by Little_Al1991 »

I believe this to be quite important as it provides further insight into a very interesting period within the Lucchese Family. A period which we think we know a lot about but since John Pennisi’s appearance on YouTube, clearly it is a period which we need to know more about since the narrative surrounding it has been distorted

Carew also provides us with information about Christie Tick Furnari which is long overdue. He also presents a clearer picture surrounding the murder contracts placed onto Tumac (NJ Capo) and Peter Chiodo

Carew also participated in a hit with Mike DeSantis who is currently the Acting Boss of the Lucchese Family

The notes stem from a case in which Carew is testifying against Richard Pagliarulo during May of 1994

CHRISTIE TICK FURNARI

Thomas Carew first met Furnari during 1960/61

He had an argument with a few guys and they went to Furnari but because he started hanging around his “club” Furnari straightened it out

After this, he started staying with him more and more

He was now an associate with him

Carew went away to prison during this time but in the late 1960s, he sold swag and stolen property, hijacking, labor racketeering enforcer and insurance fraud. Gambling and a junkyard he had. He chopped some cars, as he put it

This happened under Furnari

From the late 60s, until the mid 70s, around 76 or somewhere around there.78

In the 1970s, Carew worked as a shop steward in jobs that Furnari put him in and later on, he gave beatings to union guys to put them in line

Carew was Irish, so he couldn’t be made but stated that in order to be made, your father had to be Italian

Carew described the 19th Hole as Furnari’s hangout. It was his place. He held court there.

When asked who associated themselves with Furnari in the 19th Hole, Carew mentioned Nick DiConstanza,Angelo DeFendis,Frankie Hearts Bellino, Tommy DiDonato, Johnny Black and another Johnny who was in Florida but whenever he came down, he went to the 19th hole

When asked about associates in the 1970s, he mentioned Dino Marino, who cut Furnari’s hair and a person named Frankie Bola

Furnari became a Capo in 1977” somewhere around that vicinity’

When Furnari became a Capo, Carew couldn’t drive him anymore because “when you’re in that position, you have to have a made member do your running around because you have to take appointments with other people” and sit in sometimes

Usually, the protocol was that a made member would do the aforementioned

in approximately early 1987 after Chiodo was inducted, Chris “jumbo” Furnari who was Furnari’s son and who was an Acting Capo spoke to Carew about Joseph Martinelli who was one of the principles in Northberry concrete

Jumbo eventually was put back to the position of soldier

During spring of 1987, Jumbo told Carew to tell Chiodo to give a beating to Martinelli because he wasn’t doing the right thing with the money

Jumbo claimed that his father wanted it done and that he had gotten the okay from Bobby Amuso
At this time, Chiodo and Carew were reporting to Bobby Amuso who was their Capo

Chiodo checked it out and found out that Bobby has no knowledge of any of this

In reference to Jumbo’s position within the family after this, Carew stated, “I believe eventually he was shelved for that and a few other things”

THOMAS CAREW

Carew was assigned the murder of Joey Abbinanti in the late 70s.

They conducted surveillance but it was called of

Joey is the son of Lucchese member, Pete the killer

In the 1970s, Carew learnt that the Lucchese Family and Furnari’s crew stored weapons for use by its members and associates

Carew had his own weapons, including a machine gun with a silencer but got rid of his weapons after Chiodo was shot and cooperating with the government

Around the end of 1979, Carew spent less time with the 19th Hole crew because he had some legitimate business opportunities and he received Furnari’s permission to disassociate himself from active involvement with the family

Though he still engaged in crime in the legit business he was in which was selling clothes, he made Jeans and put major labels onto them

He was also legitimately involved in construction foundation installation

PETER CHIODO

In approximately 1975, he met Peter Chiodo

Chiodo’s dad asked Furnari to represent his son, Pete, at a meeting with Colombo Family members
Chiodo had a dispute with some members of the Colombo’s

Carew attended the sit down with Furnari and stated that Furnari got a “good decision” for Pete

After that, Pete became friendly with Furnari and started staying around the 19th Hole Crew
“I hung out with Pete quite a lot”

He worked crap games with him, they assaulted a union official together and sold stolen property with each other “and different things like that”

Carew became godfather to Chiodo’s daughter

Jimmy bishop, a union official went to Dino Marino, the barber and asked if he could get him some help to get union official, James Volford out of the way so Bishop could have more control over the union

Dino went to Furnari who assigned them the job

After this, bishop became “very strong” and the Lucchese’s guy in the painters union

When asked if the Lucchese family continued their relationship with the painters union, right up until recently was 1994

Carew sent a message to Chiodo about being made, Chiodo responded by saying tell Anthony and Vic that it would be my honor

A couple of months later, Casso told Carew to pick Chiodo up

They met Lastorino and Bobby Amuso who drove away with him

He decided to become a little more active once Chiodo was inducted because Pete said he needed him to hang out and Chiodo also said that there will a lot of financial opportunities that Carew would do good in

After becoming made, Chiodo, Gabe Lombardo, Mike DeSantis and Carew put up some money to build a club in Gravesend which became Chiodo’s headquarters

After Chiodo was arrested in May of 1990, Carew and other members of the crew had far less contact him

ANTHONY “GASPIPE” CASSO

He was requested to meet Casso in the mid 70s in a club on 15th Avenue

A dead body was present, Carew cleaned up the blood and took the body with Casso to a car

In 1986, during the summer, Casso asked him to do the foundation work on a house in Mill Basin home which Casso wanted to build

“I’ve known Anthony close to 25 to 30 years”

In early 1987, Casso wanted to have a discussion with Chiodo in relation to being inducted asked Carew if Chiodo wanted to be straightened out, Carew said “I think so, I’m not sure”

When asked why Gaspipe would give him this message, he said it’s because I’ve been around the family for a long time and that he knew Anthony for a while, Anthony also trusted him and because Carew was friendly with Pete

VIC AMUSO

Carew met Amuso in prison in the early 1960s

When asked if Amuso had a relationship with Furnari around this time period, Carew answered “yes”

Anthony Casso came around first then Vic came around after him

Associates around Furnari who became members during the 1970s were, Vic Amuso,Casso,Bobby Amuso,DeFendis,Nicky DiConstanza, Frankie Bellino,Tommy DiDonato and Johnny Black was inducted “later on”

Mike Spinelli was inducted in prison. Carew stated “yes. I believe Vic approved it.”

At that time, Bowat,Sal Avellino,Casso,Carew,Lastorino and then DeSantis and a few other members were in the same prison when Spinelli was inducted

Joe “cakes” Marion was around the Lucchese family for a while

Frank Arpino was friends with Vic and Gas. He was around the family and used to go to the Walnut all the time

MICHAEL “BIG MIKE” DESANTIS (Currently he’s the Acting Boss)

At the end of summer, 1991, Carew was asked by DeSantis to watch a house and make sure nobody went near it because DeSantis wanted to place a van full of drugs into the garage

It never came to fruition since the load was confiscated

Petey Canarsie appears within a surveillance picture but Carew states that he was friends with DeSantis and had no connection to the family

Mikey had a body and tender shop across the street from Chiodo’s HQ named Concept Auto Body

In 1987, DeSantis introduced a friend of his who was going to become an associate of the crew, Richard Pagliarulo

Before meeting him, Chiodo and DeSantis had told Carew that Richie was a shooter, a tough guy and a good friend of Michael DeSantis

MOTIVE BEHIND THE CONTRACT PLACED ONTO ANTHONY “TUMAC” ACCETTURO

“Now In the fall, late 1988” Carew learnt that Vic and Gas reached a decision on how they would deal with Tumac

They wanted Tumac dead

Tumac was the Capo of the NJ crew

His son, Anthony junior was a made member

Carew had met both at the Walnut which Gas and Vic used as their meeting place

Junior frequented the place

The motive behind Vic and Gas wanting him dead, according to Carew, was – “He had a case and after he beat the case, he wasn’t turning in money to the family and then he refused to come in when they wanted to see him. He kept making excuses and not coming in.”

According to Carew, when an order came out from the Lucchese administration to report to a meeting, you had to go in or you had to have a real good excuse not to go. You can’t just keep putting it of

ATTEMPTS TO KILL ACCETTURO

Throughout the next few years, Carew was involved with attempts to kill Tumac and his crew

Casso wanted to use Carew’s house in late 1988 for what Carew thought to be a meeting with Tumac and his son but Chiodo told Carew that it was going to be used to kill them

Tumac was in Florida and was supposed to be picked up when he got back

A day or two before it was supposed to happen, it was called off because Tumac couldn’t make it
When asked about the plan to lure Tumac to Carew’s house and who would participate in the murder

Carew said “I think” then went on to name, himself,Chiodo,Lastorino,Amuso and Casso. He also said “I don’t know who else”

Carew wasn’t happy about Vic and gas wanting to use his house, he didn’t think it was right but he went along with it

Chiodo,Carew and Pagliarulo headed to Florida, Chiodo gave a Spanish person who’s named junior 50 thousand dollars as a start up fee to kill Tumac or both of the Accetturo’s

DeSantis,Pagliarulo,Chiodo and Mike Spinelli would go back and forth from Florida with the intention of killing members of the Accetturo crew

Carew learned from Pagliarulo and Chiodo that Danny Lataro, the son of Joey Lataro, let them stay at his house in Florida

They needed a place to stay in order to get information on Tumac’s whereabouts and so they could start doing their surveillance

After a while theyfound out that Tumac went to a hotel in Fort Lauderdale, the diplomat, so they rented an apartment across the street and they conducted surveillance through spyglasses

They found Tumac’s address and they wanted to get an apartment across the street so they could see if it was an opportune place to kill him

They couldn’t rent a house so they had to buy one on the block

ATTEMPTED MURDER OF ACCETTURO CREW MEMBER, JOE “THE CAT” LAFORTE

Carew was told by DeSantis and Chiodo about a plot to kill Joseph “Uncle Joe” LaMorte

DeSantis and Chiodo conducted surveillance

“I think Ritchie (Pagliarulo) and Pete were in one car and Mike (DeSantis) and Mike Spinelli were in another and they spotted him coming home

They pulled up next to him, Spinelli got out and shot him

They thought he was dead

PLOT TO MURDER TOMMY RICCIARDI

Carew was given Tommy Ricciardi address and went to check it out it was in toms River New Jersey it was a house across a horse farm

He went there on a couple of different occasions with others such as Al D’Arco and his son Mike DeSantis, and as he said I think Richard Pagliarulo

Mike DeSantis rented a spot in the horse farm and which was right next to Tommy’s house and if had an opportunity, he would shoot him

Testimony took place on May 26th, 1994

RENEWAL ARTS BEATING

In spring of 1999 DeSantis Carew, Pagliarulo Mike Spinelli Peter Chiodo and Angelo DeFendis went to renewal arts company and they went there with the intention of giving a guy a beating

They went into the place and DeSantis Pagliarulo and Carew administered the beating.

DeSantis had some words with the guy and then threw a punch at him. Carew grabbed the phone out of his hand and DeSantis and Pagliarulo started throwing punches at him

ATTEMPTED MURDER OF JOSPEH MARTINELI

In 1989, Gas and Vic wanted Martinelli dead

Chiodo received the contract

Those involved in the plotting of his death were Carew,DeSantis,Pagliarulo,Chiodo,Whitey Capello and Greg Capello

They conducted surveillance on his business and house

Decided that the best opportunity to kill him would be outside his house

DeSantis,Carew,Pagliarulo and Greg Capello laid across the street of his house, waiting for him but he never appeared

DeSantis decided that in the next evening or a couple after that, to lay in the wooded lot and said he’d shoot him if he appears

Pagliarulo wanted DeSantis to shoot Martinelli as he felt that it was his turn to do the work

Carew states that the next attempt, on Nostrand Avenue was set up by Chiodo but he cannot remember for sure

They decided not to do it because he came with his brother

In another attempt at the same location but this time in an insurance building across the street, they weren’t able to do it

DeSantis was supposed to be the shooter and Pagliarulo was supposed to back him up

DeSantis appeared but he had some trouble with his car and said he’d meet them by the building
But he never appeared, Pagliarulo went inside with a sawed off shotgun in his shirt, worried that DeSantis went it and had nobody backing him but Pagliarulo came out and said that DeSantis wasn’t there

Pagliarulo commented on DeSantis failing to show by saying, according to Carew, “in effect, he said he was a punk. He didn’t show up. Some words to that effect.”

The third attempt would take place at a garage building on 13th Avenue around 4th Avenue

It was owned by Vinnie Guarino an associate of the crew also known as Vinny Electric or Vinny electrician

Chiodo made an appointment to meet Martinelli and bring him to the location

DeSantis, Pagliarulo and Greg Capello were waiting there

Carew was going to be outside and would tell them to get ready when Chiodo arrived with martinelli

They used two way radios to communicate

It was decided that DeSantis would be the shooter, Pagliarulo was a little aggravated that he didn’t show

They were ready but a little while later, Carew saw DeSantis walk out of the building and he went out of sight

Later, Chiodo appeared with Martinelli but Pagliarulo and Capello told Carew through the radio’s that they weren’t opening up because Mikey DeSantis wasn’t back

Chiodo banged on the door but didn’t receive a response

Carew said DeSantis left because of surveillance cameras for a burglar alarm, he left to find out what was going on with it and he didn’t come back in time

Pagliarulo commented to Carew that DeSantis did it again, that he wasn’t in the place that he was supposed to be

DeSantis told Carew that he was trying to get a phone that worked and that he had to go a few blocks away

Another attempt was made by Chiodo and Pagliarulo but when Chiodo went to fire the gun, it didn’t go off, Chiodo played it off as a joke and said to Martinelli that it was his kids toy
Chiodo told Pagliarulo not to say anything so Pagliarulo told Carew not to mention it but Chiodo told Carew around 7 to 10 days later

THE MURDER OF JULIUS CALDER

In the summer of 1989

A longtime Lucchese associate in the numbers business then went into the heroin business

Calder told Carew that he owed Gaspipe, 50 thousand and that Gas was breaking his chops over it

Chiodo asked Carew where Julius hung out and Carew told him and then Chiodo also told him that they are looking to clip him

When asked about having discussions about Calder murder with associates of the crew, he mentioned George Conte Mike DeSantis and another person that he cannot remember lI thought it was Joe D’Arco but im not sure”

They were standing in the driveway of concept collision and he heard Conte tell DeSantis that Frankie Bone ( Papagni )didn’t want to stop shooting Julius

THE MURDER OF JOHN “SONNY” MORRISSEY

A union official with local 580

He was close with Amuso

He was friends with Amuso

Pete told Carew that the union belonged to the Lucchese family

Peter Savino was called Black heart amongst the guys

Chiodo asked Carew to kill Sonny because Vic and Gas thought that Sonny was going bad and they wanted him hit

Carew said “going bad” means becoming an informer

Chiodo told Carew that DeSantis and Pagliarulo would also participate but Pagliarulo would be the shooter

Carew and Chiodo went to a coffee shop at second avenue between 28th and 29th street in Manhattan

Sonny was there with Jimmy Mcarthy and Paulie Palola, both had window companies and were friends with other members of the family

Chiodo took Sonny for a walk for about 15 minutes

Chiodo told Carew that he had told him that tomorrow, Vic wanted to meet Sonny and to come alone

Chiodo told Carew to bring a gun. He came with a 38.

They picked up Sonny from a luncheonette on first Avenue right on the corner of 29th Street

He got into the back and Chiodo drove with Carew next to him

Chiodo and DeSantis would back up Carew and Pagliarulo with anything they needed. Carew was to back up Pagliarulo specifically

Chiodo arrived with them to a development in New Jersey that Chiodo had lived in at some point, and introduced Sonny to Pagliarulo. As they walked into the chalet type building that Pete used as an office at some point, Chiodo said that he was going to get Vic and went out

Carew took his jacket off and put it on the desk. Pagliarulo went into a wastebasket of some sort and pulled out a silenced pistol and pointed it towards Sonny’s head, Sonny said I’m no rat and was shot twice in the head by Pagliarulo

His gun jammed so he said to Carew, shoot him, shoot him, Carew shot him a few times and as he was shooting him, Pagliarulo “went like this. Wait a minute, he had unjammed his gun and walked over to where Sonny was who was now moaning and shot him in the head

They couldn’t find nothing to put the body in so they used a rug that was there which Carew started to cut with a little penknife

Chiodo entered because he heard shots and wanted to know what happened, they told him what happened.
The gun jammed and he went out and brought DeSantis who came with a backhoe

They went to the back of the chalet type building where there was a trailer that Chiodo used to live in and they started digging a hole

DeSantis made a gash on the trailer with the fork on the backhoe accidentally that was next to where they buried the body

As that was going on, Carew and Pagliarulo took turns to cut the rug since it was tiresome, Chiodo went through Sonny’s pockets and Carew and Pagliarulo tied up the rug with some sort of wire and the 4 of them together dragged him to the hole that was dug

The hole was a little lopsided since DeSantis wasn’t to familiar with the backhoe. It was on a slant and they threw the body in the hole

DeSantis covered it up with the backhoe

Pagliarulo and DeSantis left together

Chiodo left with Carew and Chiodo broke up his credit cards and ripped up his wallet and threw them out at different intervals while driving

After Chiodo cooperated, DeSantis,Pagliarulo and Carew discussed moving the body so DeSantis went to Hidden Hills to see if it was feasible, it was not, construction was taking place and DeSantis felt that it wasn’t a good idea to move the body as they might get caught

BRUNO FACCIOLO

When asked about how long Bruno was a member of the family, this is what Carew stated “yes.well.he —I don’t know how long. He wasn’t a member that long but he was in the family for many years, he was an associate for many years.”

Bruno’s murder generated discussion among members of the crew they wondered why he was killed was it because he was a rat or was it some other reason. Was it because it because he was using money

They had an opinion as to what was the reason (Carew didn’t state what this was)

After Bruno was murdered, Carew asked Richard if he thought if Bruno was a rat and Richard said I don’t know but when he saw me, he made a break for it

ATTEMPTED MURDER OF PETER CHIODO

At the time of this shooting Chiodo was a skipper, but he was on the shelf and he wasn’t in good graces with the bosses

Chiodo had pled guilty in certain cases pending against him and he didn’t get permission from Vic and Gas and they didn’t like that

He supposedly owed Vic and gas money and then they were mad that it didn’t jibe with the figures that he had put in

After he survived the attempt on his life, Carew figured that Chiodo would flip

Pagliarulo told Carew that if he was one of the shooters instead of being in the crash car, Pete wouldn’t be alive today

Lastorino took care of Chiodo’s crew for a while after Chiodo was shelved

He took his position but it doesn’t say if he was Acting or not (probably was Acting)

RICHARD PAGLIARULO

Pagliarulo told Carew that he came from the Gallo crew

Carew said that he believes that one of his uncles are Joey or Albert Gallo.”One of the Gallo’s”

Carew responded with yes when asked is it fair to say that you spent a lot of time with Chiodo,Pagliarulo,DeSantis and other persons involved with Chiodo and his crew

Frank Lastorino was his best man at his wedding

Jody Calabrese is his cousin

RICHARD PAGLIARULO AS A CAPO

In late summer, early fall of 1991, Pagliarulo officially became the Capo of Chiodo’s crew

After becoming captain Pagliarulo set to meeting places for the crew café Cecilia on 65th and near Bay Parkway

Pagliarulo opened a the restaurant called Café gondola on 85th Street and 20th Avenue on the corner

As Capo, Pagliarulo was handling the construction business for the family and had a shylocking business

Pagliarulo was the liaison with some of the other families with the construction business and the jobs who are going around and who got what, things like that

He was in contact with Johnny “G” Giabola who was taking care of the Gambino Family’s construction business

“In the end, Vinny Guarino was doing a lot of things for him (Pagliarulo) he was a lot of the running around for him

THOMAS CAREW IDENTIFIES CAPTAIN’S IN THE LUCCHESE FAMILY

Carew identified Sal Avellino as a Capo
Steve Corrao
There was a crew who operated in New York and New Jersey
Anthony “Bowat” Baratta
Danny Cutaia
Georgie Neck Zappola

A list of names were under Danny
His son Sally and Fat ANT Carew said, he’s around the Canarsie crew “I think” his name Anthony and last name begins with G, Carew stated. Later he said it was Anthony Grado

Petey V,Pete the killer,Tommy Red are members of Danny’s crew

Patty “Air” Carew believes to be Dellorusso and Patty “Cars” maybe Testa

Testa had a used car lot on foster avenue and a body shop across the street

The names Louie and Ray appeared which led Carew to say it might be Daidone and Argentina but Carew thought that Daidone had his own crew

He identified Frankie “The Wap” as a longtime member who was the boss of the crew when Paul Vario was in jail but said Frankie is now in prison (this was 1994) (I think he’s referring to Frankie “the wop” Manzo)

Carew is asked “All persons did you know them at or about the time we’re talking about? Late 1992 to be actual made members and Carew responded with yes

CAREW TESTIFIES ABOUT ZAPPOLA’S CREW

Carew was asked who Zappola took over for as Capo and Carew said “ I think they put the crew together to make a crew for him out of the the guys that were relative new members. But I don’t know who had it before him.”

The guys under Zappola, according to Carew are the following

“L.George.That is probably Little Georgie.Thats George Conte”
Frankie Bones Papagni
Frank Gioa “would probably be the next guy”
Anthony B.L. “Might be Anthony Blue Eyes” is later confirmed to be Anthony stabile who was killed

“Patty I’m not sure of”

Jimmy Frog also known as Froggie (That’s gotta be Galione) Carew said he hung out with George Conte and wasn’t sure if he was a member or not but then said I think he was

Tony Albanese “I’m not sure of” (he may have not know him) “it could be anyone of a couple of guys I don’t know which one it is”

They closed the books from 1957 until the mid 70s unless it was a special thing you know like –

then he was cut of before he could finish what he could say

After they opened the books, everybody could make a certain amount of people, but then after that you could only make people if they retired got sick or died

If somebody died, you had a spot open where you could make another guy with

it kept a balance, nobody could get ahead of each other in crews in the other families

When looking at surveillance pictures, he said Sal is around Joe Beck but didn’t mention Sal’s last name

Gabe died a couple of years ago

He also mentioned Sammy the hat who was an associate

INFORMATION REVEALED ON CROSS EXAMINATION

Carew said he didn’t speak to Casso about this in prison as it was a touchy subject that he had all these documents in his home

Carew never reported directly to Vic or Gas

Carew said he was friendly with Casso

Pagliarulo’s lawyer made mention of Carew’s legitimate businesses and how Casso destroyed it “He destroyed it for you, didn’t he? When you were making a living in legitimate business? And you were not associating with the family at all” Carew responded with yes

Well, later on when things got bad, he wanted his — you know, properties that the business owned that I had been involved with

I got involved with Casso after 86 and got involved with him in the property after 86 and in around 89 or somewhere there. 90, I turned the property over to him

Carew had no contact with Amuso when he was on the lam

There was no method for members to reach Amuso when he was on the lam

There was only certain guys who used to reach him

After Al D’Arco was demoted, 3 others filled the top spots

Sal Avellino,Bowat Baratta and Frank Lastorino filled these positions

DeSantis wanted to take the jewellery of Sonny Morrisey after he was dead in order to prevent it from ID’ing Sonny

A newspaper was folded around the gun Pagliarulo took out to shoot Sonny

He was 7 to 10 feet away before shooting Sonny

Carew was 7 to 8 feet away before shooting

When asked if Chiodo was an honest man in dealing with him, Caarew said to a degree but said he was untruthful on some occasions but also stated that Chiodo told him the truth on most occasions
In regards to Chiodo’s 302s, Carew said everything that he had read in their was true

DISPUTE BETWEEN DESANTIS AND PAGLIARULO

A dispute a rose between Pagliarulo and DeSantis over shared Lucchese family business interests because DeSantis thought that Pagliarulo was mistreating his business interests on the street
DeSantis was arrested before Pagliarulo

Sit down ensued in prison which was settled by higher ranking members of the Lucchese family

After, Pagliarulo complained that he had been mistreated in the sitdown, that he was not given credit for all the work that he had done and the people he killed for the family such as Morrissey,Facciolo among others

Pagliarulo said “they are treating me like shit” it started in some other things, they didn’t call him to the legal meetings and things like that

He also said to Carew that “ I did a lot of work for this family”

According to Carew he did and I believe him because he was around the 19th Hole and he was close to Furnari

The only source I’ve seen for Furnari’s ascension to Capo is this and a document which stated that it was the early 70s, if I remember correctly

Very interesting and thanks for posting this.

I am sure that the FBI listed Furnari as a skipper already in the early 1960s. Not impossible that he stepped down as skipper sometime later and made a skipper again in the 1970s, if that is the case.
There you have it, never printed before.

Never heard of Carew, definitely a well-placed associate with a lot of great insight. Thanks for posting it. He even knew some of the more obscure members and his account just adds to how vicious the Lucchese Brooklyn crews were.

Did Carew explicitly say Chiodo was still a captain while he was shelved? That's how that part reads and might play into something Sal Vitale said in testimony, that a member doesn't necessarily lose his rank when he is shelved. Vitale was very clear on that and it might sound weird to us but often being shelved is meant to be temporary. There are many little formalities that aren't widely known to the public.

It really slows the down the process of reading it as I’m constantly typing notes down but it’s worth it because it can generate great discussion and it helps with dispelling myths which is always great

Thank you
It’s always great to see insight into this period of the Lucchese Family
