Matteo Messina Denaro, admitted to the inmates ward of the L'Aquila hospital, is in an irreversible coma. In the evening, the doctors suspended his diet. The Cosa Nostra boss, arrested last January 16 after a nearly thirty-year run, is sick with advanced colon cancer. On September 12, Messina Denaro's health condition worsened and doctors ruled out his return to prison. The surgery he underwent in recent months was little by any use. Italy Police Take Down Chinese Shadow Network Laundering Mafia Cash

MILAN — Italian police arrested 33 people on Wednesday in a new crackdown on a network of Chinese money brokers who allegedly laundered over 50 million euro ($52.5 million) from drug trafficking groups, including the 'Ndrangheta mafia.

Guardia di Finanza police colonel Francesco Ruis told Reuters a distinctive aspect of the case was the connection created between organizations like the 'Ndrangheta and Chinese entities providing financial services.

Ruis, who led the latest investigation in Rome, said the figure of more than 50 million euros in tracked financial movements did not give the true dimensions of the affair.

"This is what we have tracked from 2020 to 2022, but investigations cannot trace all operations. It's like doing a stakeout, you see 20% of what happens," he said.

Guardia di Finanza police said in a statement they had arrested 33 people, including seven Chinese nationals, in Rome and in other six Italian towns on charges of organized criminal conspiracy for drug trafficking and money laundering.

They also seized around 10 million euro in cash from so-called "money mules," who were in charge of transferring money abroad, the statement said.

Several recent investigations have shown how drugs cartels in Italy are increasingly using shadow networks of unlicensed Chinese money brokers to conceal cross-border payments.

The transfer method, often referred to by the Chinese term fei qian or fei chien, meaning flying money, involves depositing a sum with a money broker in Italy while another agent in the network elsewhere in the world pays the equivalent amount to the intended recipient.

The money laundering at the center of the latest case took place at Chinese import-export businesses of clothing and fashion accessories in the Esquilino district of the Italian capital.

These acted as collection centers for the money of illicit origin, which was eventually transferred anonymously and untraceably to China.

The fei chien method does not involve the physical transfer of money from the customer, who buys the drug shipment, to the supplier, who sells it. But China was the final destination for the cash, police said.

"The deals between the two Chinese brokers took place through triangulations and fictitious business transactions in China, while the cash traveled by plane to China using the so-called money mules," Ruis said.

The investigation was helped by accessing encrypted chats on a platform that was dismantled in 2021 by a Europol Joint Investigation Team, the statement said.

Wow, thanks for sharing this. Few years ago during Stato-Mafia trial , several witnesses mentioned there was "super commission" formed by most powerful people from all groups , also some secret service members and freemasons. But there was no proof of that. Few witnesses disappeared from witness protection program during that trial so i guess they knew stuff.

There has been less and less division between these mafias over the years.

I've said many times.... if you suspend the ranks for a second, all the most powerful families look very similar, powerful surnames in control of holdling companies with legit and illicit interest. What percentage of the activity is legit vs illicit really varies from clan to clan, family to family....

Of course its not whole Naples, there are clans and families in Naples that are very powerful and very organized. But its mostly chaotic place, with less organization than Sicily and Calabria. Alliances come and go , new clans appear and disappear every few years and because of that, Naples is much more violent than any other part of Italy. Beginning of this year there were like 10 murders in 3 months, even one mistaken identity.

To Everyone: Regarding the "Super Mafia" article; many years ago, in my area, for a short period of time, I was able to purchase a weekly newspaper called "The European", which was an English language weekly newspaper which reported news items, articles, and commentary on events occurring in Europe. Again, many years ago, and my memory on this is terrible, it could have been 15 to 20 years ago, I read an article in this newspaper reporting about some European law enforcement agency that reported on a grand meeting (my words) of representatives from the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, the American Cosa Nostra, the Neapolitan Camorra, the Russian Mafia, the Chinese Triads, and the Japanese Yakuza. IIRC, the purpose of the meeting was dividing up various rackets and territories throughout Europe. Also, I remember as I was reading that article, I made a mental note at the time that that was the 2nd time I remember reading an article about an overall Grand Commission (my words), where the major international criminal secret societies got together.

Does anyone on this Forum remember this, or any similar, article or articles on the subject of an international "Grand Commission" (my words)?

A Pennisi video on the meeting, he names Paolo Perrino cousin of Matteo Messina Denaro and high ranking member of Cosa Nostra as the organizer of the meeting. Apparently the authorizes not only set up surveillance of the meeting but they were also able to plant bugs and listen in on the entire meeting.
