Info on Luciano (AKA: Charles, Dilly, John Dillinger) Spataro in Canada

Post by NickleCity »

Just realize Spataro had been arrested for arson, served time, and escaped from prison in Canada. Anyone know of any other activity for him in Canada?

In the Canadian newspaper items that discuss Spataro, he is identified as either Charles Angelo Spataro, Charles A. Spataro, or Charles Spataro. A number of the articles to which I've linked farther below via my Evernote account indicate that he married a niece of Stefano Magaddino.

As an appellant in Supreme Court of Canada cases, Spataro has his name appear in published legal decisions as Charles Angelo Spataro.

In Apr. 1970, Spataro was convicted by an Ontario jury on five counts, having been indicted on six counts of arson and related offences for his part in an arson attempt in Jan. of that year. He fled Ontario in Jun. 1974 while on a weekend pass from the Warkworth penitentiary where he was an inmate. Law enforcement in Buffalo caught him in Feb. 1975. Canada successfully had him extradited, and Spataro returned to a Canadian prison -- so far I have found no articles about his eventual release.

Back on the old Real Deal forum, in a thread titled "Buffalo/Boston early 80s question," a poster reached out to Ron Fino to check with the latter about the heroin-coke ring discussed earlier in the thread, and then the poster copy-pasted Fino's response as follows: "No members of Buffalo were involved in heroin. A few associates Dilly Spataro, and Al Monaco, Joe LoVullo, Ronald Carlyle, Peter Piccolo were involved. Check my spelling...but Todaro would have NEVER gotten involved in drugs, let alone interstate drug trafficking."

The surname Spataro will be commonly found among individuals with ancestry from either Sicily or Calabria. We might recall that when articles were published in 2010 about the failed bid by 'ndranghetista Antonio Coluccio to obtain permanent residency in Canada, a letter sent to him the year before by the Canadian embassy in Rome indicated he was "linked" to 8 men in Canada who were "known to be members of traditional organized crime groups and/or have criminal records relating to organized crime." Giuseppe Cuntrera and Domenico Spataro are 2 of the 8 men. Writing about the matter, Adrian Humphreys indicated that Cuntrera and Spataro are related to leaders of the Caruana-Cuntrera group here in Canada.

Anti thanks for the detailed response and information.

Cabrini as far as BUSICO Coppola doesn’t believe the mob leadership knew about it. likely boss or underboss Todaro; if not Todaro as boss it was Frangiamore and Todaro was front/street/acting boss. Coppola wrote:

Not sure the evidence he had for that statement, personally I don’t buy it. People I believe are in the know have told me Aiello was a made man and got a lot of fat envelopes at a party when he got out for doing his time without talking. I’ve been told his brother took over his book when he was in prison and his brother was also promoted by Todaro to the steward position in 210 shortly after Andy went away. BTW a whistle blower told Dan Herbeck at The Buffalo News that the DEA had received information about the Aiello drug operation years earlier but dragged their feet… Whistleblower came forward after Herbeck had published an article indicating LE said Aiello was relative unknown to them. My take… DEA was compromised and protecting him kinda like the alleged Bongiovanni case today.

Falzone on wiretaps admitting they oversaw the drug operations. The family has been involved in drugs since its inception regardless of the rhetoric it wasnt allowed.

Real interesting Spataro was married to a Maggadino niece. Assuming he was directly on record with him and that leans to him being a member not just an associate.

Stephen Leggett, a longtime Crown Attorney in Ontario, was quoted a number of times saying that Spataro’s wife was Magaddino’s niece. One article to which I already linked in my previous post merely repeats the same but without citing Leggett. None of the Canadian and American news articles I’ve read so far provide the source for Leggett’s and others’ claim about her.

The obituaries below seem to provide the reason there was a misidentification of Spataro’s wife (Carol; also Carolina) by the Canadian authorities: her maiden name, Mascellino, sounds like “Magaddino.” The news items below respectively indicate what the police in Buffalo and the Spataro family itself thought of the claim about Spataro’s wife.

Spataro was a career criminal: thief, professional torch, drug dealer, hitman. From everything I’ve read about him so far, he really put his wife and children through the wringer.

I don't know anything about him but if he was the son of Carmelo Spataro in Buffalo his family might be from Siracusa province in southeastern Sicily. Carmelo had a son named Luciano/Charles with the same middle initial, born around the same year.
