He secretly cooperated with the Italian Treasury over two decades before his book came out. Not sure why he wrote it, maybe money was a reason given Antonino Calderone said Gentile was living in poverty when he was older. The book being published in 1963 could have been an attempt to capitalize on the post-Apalachin media environment where many of Gentile's former peers were becoming household names. He may have wanted to get his story out given he was connected to names and events that were now out in the open. His book wasn't released in the US though.

Don't know of any recordings but the Sicilian mafia tasked the Catania Family with killing him though they didn't follow through as he was elderly and living in terrible conditions. Calderone mentioned it in his book.

He never transferred rank, only his membership. He then got promoted in different places.

He returned from Sicily in 1930 and became Cleveland consigliere then was appointed to a peace commission to try and mediate the war. He was sympathetic with Masseria. Not sure exactly when it happened but by the end of the war he returned to Pittsburgh, transferred, and became consigliere before returning to NYC and joining the Gambinos around late 1932.

Gentile fled the US in 1937 to avoid trial and a sentence for narcotics trafficking, which caused his bondsman to lose his money. By 1940 he missed the US so much (he was alienated from his wife and daughter, and had a second family in the US) that he wrote his autobiography and went to the American embassy to try to make a deal to return without going to prison. He even offered to testify. The Bureau of Narcotics said no deal.

he was a soldier in Philly made in 1907

soldier? in Pittsburgh 1915-1919

in 1921 he transferred to Nicola Schiro (Bonanno family) and it appears he was a soldier

he traveled to a bunch of cities in 1921, but not sure if he transferred any other places

By 1925, he was boss of Kansas City

Cleveland Consigliere in 1930

1931? he became consigliere of Pittsburgh

in 1935? he transferred to the Mangano (Gambino) family

not sure if this is completely correct

He was living in Topeka in the late 00s so he may have transferred to KC after "Philadelphia" then he bounced between Siculiana and New York before moving to Pittsburgh and joining them. He doesn't specify his affiliation during that time but based on his later patterns he might well have affiliated with the local organizations in those areas. However he was constantly traveling so he could have been a remote member of one or more of these Families.

After his first time in Pittsburgh he transferred to the Porto Empedocle Family then came back and briefly joined the Bonannos. He was then a San Francisco member for a short time before moving to Kansas City and becoming boss.

When he returned to Sicily after leaving Kansas City he doesn't say what his affiliation was overseas but it could have been Porto Empedocle again.

After joining the Gambino Family in 1932 he was technically a soldier but Mangano designated him as an acting representative over the Agrigento capidecine and was authorized to mediate disputes. He was a "sostituto" which was typically used to refer to what we now call an acting boss. It's hard to gauge how this was formally interpreted but he was at least a de facto assistant to the admin given he had a degree of power over a faction of Family captains.

When he considered his return to Sicily after his narcotics arrest the decision was made at a meeting of Gentile, Mangano, Anastasia, Biondo, and Chiri. Three of these guys were the admin but he doesn't specify why Chiri was involved and if this had formal significance. If a consiglio existed in the Gambino Family at that time it's possible these five men comprised it.
