It's the 1960s, so that's probably worth $50,000 a month in today's money.
I was curious so I used the inflation calculator, but $5000 in 1965 would be about $47,500 today. So I'm guessing that's not what got kicked up. Just what the crew in Baltimore was bringing in. I don't think anyone is claiming Baltimore had some large crew, so in modern dollars, $570,000 a year split between a relatively small crew, less than ten total guys(made and associates and I'm just guessing a number) it's not terrible.

Yeah I’m no expert but my impression has been that the Gambino Baltimore crew had only a modest involvement in traditional racket operations. From what little I know, most of the gambling in B’More was handled by the Jews, with the mafia having a smaller footprint and being primarily involved in legitimate food businesses (similar to the Madison outfit).

Chicago Jewish associate Jack Gail claimed in his book that he was tasked by Phil Alderisio in the 60s to go on flights to Baltimore and bring back suitcases full of money. Gail said that Alderisio was very close to the “boss of Baltimore”, who also visited Alderisio in his Teamsters-owned penthouse at Lake Point Tower in Chicago. If Gail was correct, then Alderisio had something in partnership with the Baltimore crew that was bringing in a lot of money, perhaps related to union stuff; Gail didn’t say and probably didn’t know anyway. It’s also unclear to me exactly what years this was happening so I’m not sure if Gail was referring to Corbi or Morici, or both.

Yeah Joe N Gallo had to help organize gambling in Baltimore and played "bad cop" to get one of the bigger Jewish gamblers to pay. I don't think the actual Baltimore crew was that interested in it.

The Baltimore crew had been influential in boxing but later they were mainly focused on food businesses and used the mafia network to that end. They did business with the Maggios in Philly and other mafia cheese companies.

Gravano was asked about the Baltimore crew during one of his Patreon live Q&As and he said he doesn't know much about them. He responded "I didn't even know we had a crew down there, tbh." I'm guessing he meant before he and Gotti took over. Gallo probably mentioned the crew to them at that point, but the crew had probably died out by then.

Interesting. I wonder why Gotti was chosen to do that, of all people, during that time period.

Inflation calculator is wrong. Its all about purchasing power. In the 60s you could buy a house in Brooklyn for 30k which is 300k in todays money but it is impossible to buy a house in bensonhurst or even shittier neighborhoods like Brownsville for 300k today

Was the price on the book? Ask Andy columns were always great so I would probably be into it. But the whole Baltimore crew I could give zero shits about.
