There are, at least technically speaking, some Tongs in the U.S. The Chee Kung Tong in San Francisco (1848), Hip Sing Tong in NY (1855), Hop Sing Tong in San Francisco (1870), and On Leong Ton in NY (1894). But it's hard to track if their existence has been continuous over the years. And besides appearing to be basically legitimate at this point, they' seem to be fading out of existence in the Chinese community.

You also have the Outlaws MC, said to be founded in 1935.

We have Leonardo Messina (b. 1955) saying he was the 7th generation in his blood family to be a Cosa Nostra member which should date the San Cataldo Family back to the 1850s-1860s at the latest. San Cataldo no doubt adapted the mafia after its counterparts further west.

Turrisi Colonna in Palermo said it existed since the 1840s.

Then there's the 1820s Agrigento investigation that found a ritualistic criminal secret society existed involving all of the familiar comuni.

My guess is it goes back to the late 1700s there just isn't proof like Scagghiuni said.

In 1838, Pietro Cala Ulloa, a judge in Trapani, wrote a report to the minister of Justice of the Bourbonic Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Naples. In this document, he refers to partiti, sects which operate as “governments within the government.” Most historians take this as a reference to the Mafia. Italian historian Paolo Pezzino believes it started after 1830. I found evidence that I'm not at liberty to share that it was between 1810 and 1830, but I haven't seen anything to bring it back to the 1790s. I think it started after the British occupation of Sicily ended.
