Re: Eugene Smaldone died
Pretty sure this is a different Eugene Smaldone who was possibly made. Eugene Smaldone Jr was the one that followed his family into crime. he got involved with gambling and narcotics in the 1970s. He had a deformed hand. This Eugene Smaldone that recently died was a legit high school coach, not a criminal. I looked it up and the picture below is the Eugene Jr that was involved. Notice his deformed hand. I believe he was Eugene’s son or grandson and was born in 1936 and is still alive.

Interesting info, thanks. They were close with Giancana too who was in the workings during the early 60s and later during the early 70s while he was in Mexico i thinkB. wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 1:42 pm Lew Fratto knew them personally and they were partners in Denver rackets but he said they weren't made members circa 1967. However Jimmy Fratianno had told Bomp the Smaldones were members earlier on and in 1969 Bomp was told by the Family's only capodecina Scotty Spinuzzi that the Smaldones were among the few remaining members.

Of course that came from the chart below. Which isn't, by itself at least, necessarily clear who was formally made. I remember you made the comment (fitting, I think) that the chart made them look more like a gambling syndicate than a LCN family.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 5:55 am Here is a Denver PD chart of their operation for those interested. Anyway, Smaldone Jr didn't seem to be an the 1985 or 1993 lists that were posted a while back.

Correct. Eugene Sr died back in 1992B. wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 2:55 pm I recommend the book about Clyde Smaldone. It was written using taped interviews Clyde's son did with his father. There's zero inside organizational info but it's a great read.
Clyde had a falling out with his brother Eugene and never showed up as one of the post-Colletti leaders.
The Eugene who just died is Clyde's son, not the brother.

The three members on the 1993 Denver list were:
Clarence Michael Smaldone
Clyde George Smaldone
[Redacted] (Probably Paul Villano, as someone mentioned earlier)

Re: Eugene Smaldone died
Any idea if he is still alive? Probably shunned by Clyde’s family but not his immediate family. Clyde was actually shunned by his brothers. Supposedly he became an evangelical later in life. There is a possibility he was never made because after he got out of prison in the 60s he had no or little involvement in the criminal organization which shows when he was never listed on any hierarchy list in the 70s and 80s. There is a big possibility that the Smaldone were made sometime in the late 60s.JoePuzzles234 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 6:04 amThis is "Flipper" Smaldone, he was the son of Eugene "Checkers", the guy who eventually became the family's boss towards the end.Patrickgold wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 10:36 pm Pretty sure this is a different Eugene Smaldone who was possibly made. Re: Eugene Smaldone died
It is my understanding that all the elder Smaldone brothers, with the exception of Anthony, the restaurateur, were members of the Colorado family. Clyde would have been ~ 56 when he got out of prison and stepped away from organised crime, so I personally don't doubt that he was a member by then - he is carried as one by the FBI in both 1985 and 1993 either way.Patrickgold wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 11:54 amAny idea if he is still alive? From the Smaldone book, on Eugene "Flipper" Jnr:
I think a total falling out like this would eliminate any chance of induction, since towards the end of the 1970s (Pueblo leaders Colletti and Spinuzzi were dead by 1975), whatever was left of the powerbase had seemingly shifted to the Denver area and the active Smaldone brothers would have been the ones making membership decisions - at least in theory.Checkers was a career criminal, but he loathed drugs and drug dealers. Eventually, he and the rest of the family shunned Young Eugene. The final break came when he told his son, “You get out of my life. I don’t want any part of you. You’re nothing but a dopehead.”
While the interaction is not dated, Young Eugene/Flipper probably had fallen out with his personal family (who pretty much made up the entire LCN one) earlier than the time of his drug case in 1973 and it seems unlikely that he would have been a member for that reason. That is my speculation, at least.
To answer this, Gallo talks about in Breakshot and on his blog, Villano dealt with LA caporegime Luigi Gelfuso over some sort of dispute related to a Las Vegas hotel that both families had an interest in. Gallo met Villano and his nephew (unnamed but since Paulie was already a nephew of the Smaldone family, I doubt it was either of the Eugenes) with Jimmy Caci, Stephen Cino and Gelfuso, who all indicated that he was the "same" as Milano.Patrickgold wrote: ↑Wed Feb 08, 2023 9:00 pm Regarding the last boss, it was Villano who was recognized as the boss by other bosses even into the early 2000s. Re: Eugene Smaldone died
The Denver PD chart appears to have been made during the 1960s, prior to 1967/69, given that John Pricco and Charles Blanda are on it. I'm not so sure it really means much that he is listed on it, given that various people on there aren't exactly correctly identified (like Joe Bonanno, Sam Shanks and other non-Italians as "other members", Smaldone brother Anthony who was just a restaurant operator etc).Patrickgold wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 8:25 pmHe very well could have been shelved.
Here is a link to his court cases from 1973

It also seems unlikely that he was inducted, given the description of him in the Smaldone book:

From the Smaldone book, on Eugene "Flipper" Jnr:I think a total falling out like this would eliminate any chance of induction, since towards the end of the 1970s (Pueblo leaders Colletti and Spinuzzi were dead by 1975), whatever was left of the powerbase had seemingly shifted to the Denver area and the active Smaldone brothers would have been the ones making membership decisions - at least in theory.Checkers was a career criminal, but he loathed drugs and drug dealers.
Kenji Gallo talked about him before saying he was recognized as the boss when he was active into the 90s. I forget the background of his connection to Villano. If anyone remembers please post. Clyde was not active after he got out of prison in the 1960s. Eugene and Clarence were at least into the 90s.
No clue about Clarence by the book had this on Clyde's name:Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 8:51 am Clarence and Clyde. Fuck kind of names are that for Italians?
PogoGaetan—the diminutive form for Clyde in Italian
Eugene Jnr is also pretty consistently referred to as Eugene Louis Smaldone in LE docs from the 1960s and is seemingly not mentioned in this 1976 report as a confirmed or suspected member either:
I have it in my notes that he was still alive last year, I believe Wiseguy had him still being around as well during discussions about Denver in one of the national membership threads.
