Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
- Born 4/17/1927 in New York City.
- Nick names: "Acne", "Cokey Dom", "Fat Dom"
- Lived in Teaneck, NJ. Before that, lived in Brooklyn and on Thompson Street in the Greenwich Village area. In the 1940s, lived in New Orleans, Louisiana where he had an aunt and an uncle GIUSEPPE GAGLIANO the underboss of CARLOS MARCELLO. Later in the 1970s, he also had a home in North Miami, Florida.
- In 1943, enlisted in the US Navy but three months later, ALONGI received an "indifferent discharge" due to "not physically qualified for re-enlistment". In 1946, ALONGI enlisted in the US Army. At the time of one of his numerous arrests, ALONGI was absent without official leave from Camp Robertson, Little Rock, Arkansas.
- Had numerous of arrests and convictions in the 1940s and 1950s mostly for auto thefts. Escaped from Riker´s Island prison in Feb 1946, found by the authorities in NY three months later. Failed to appear for court in 1953, found by the authorities in New Orleans one month later. He was suspected to be the leader of a car theft ring that stole and transported motor vehicles from NY to Florida, Puerto Rico and Cuba. According to informants, VINCENT GIGANTE was a partner of his in this ring. Possibly JOSEPH YACOVELLI, the future Colombo consigliere, was also a partner of his in same ring. A third partner was NUNZIO "NICK" RUSSO, grand father of FRANK GIOIA, future Lucchese Family member. ALONGI had worked as a mechanic and was good with cars. According to informants, ALONGI was an excellent motor number changer. In 1959, he was arrested, tried but the case (unlawful possession of fireworks) was dismissed. Also in 1959, he was arrested for policy and was fined 25,00 US dollars and sentenced to a 5 day jail term.
- In 1962, an informant identified DOM ALONGI as a made member of the Genovese Family. The informant said that DOM ALONGI is a soldier in TONY BENDER´s old crew and very close to TOMMY RYAN. ALONGI was the boss of the numbers rackets in the Greenwich Village area after ALESSANDRO "AL" ZUMBA (a TONY BENDER associate) had fallen out of favor with the crew. This same informant also stated that VINCENT GIGANTE was the one who shot FRANK COSTELLO in 1957 and that TOMMY RYAN and ALONGI were in the getaway car.
- Although spending a lot of time in Greenwich Village, ALONGI actually operated from Chinatown Social Club, located at 187 Hester Street, Little Italy.
- According to an informant, nobody was closer to TOMMY RYAN than DOM who was chauffeuring him around.
- During a visit to GENE CATENA in NJ, when he delivered a message from TOMMY RYAN, DOM ALONGI stated that he had a piece of a bagel bakery located in Brooklyn. He asked CATENA if he could help him place this bakery´s products in chain stores in NJ. CATENA assured that he would see to it that his men will help DOM with any contacts they might have.
- A report dated january 1966 from CIB regarding DOM ALONGI show:

DESCRIPTION - 260 lbs, 5´5", brown hair, partially bald. Scars over right eye and left forearm. Pock marked face.
ASSOCIATES - VINCENT GIGANTE, JOE PAGANO, ANTHONY NAPOLITANO, JAMES NAPOLI, ANTHONY CARILLO, THOMAS EBOLI, VINCENT CORRAO, SAL (MURO) PASSALAQUA, CARMINE LOMBARDI [CARMINE LOMBARDOZZI], FRANK CAGGIANO, LORENZO BRESCIA and PETE DEFEO.

ACTIVITIES - Subject lists his place of employment as dispatcher for Clover Express Company located in Teaneck, NJ. Reported to have financial interests in Bagel Boys Inc. located in Brooklyn, NY and Bagel Boys Inc. located in Teaneck, NJ.
SUSPECTED ACTIVITIES - Policy, shylocking, strong arm man.
MISCELLANEOUS - Subject a close associate and confidente for THOMAS EBOLI, acting boss of the Genovese Family. ALONGI was questioned on June 28, 1957 in connection with the attempted killing of FRANK COSTELLO.
- September 22, 1966 DOM ALONGI was one of 13 arrested at La Stella Restaurant in Queens. The Mafia meeting that was raided was soon dubbed by the press as "Little Apalachin". According to a FBI report, the arrests were made following information from a highly confidential source of the NYCPD. The source had claimed that MIKE MIRANDA and TOMMY RYAN were about to meet other high ranking members in Queens. A surveillance of these two resulted in the discovery of the 13 individuals dining in a dowmstairs room of the restaurant. The 13 individuals were CARLOS MARCELLO, JOSEPH MARCELLO, FRANK GAGLIANO, ANTHONY S. CAROLLO, ANTHONY CARILLO, JOSEPH COLOMBO, ANIELLO DELLACROCE, TOMMY EBOLI, JOE N. GALLO, CARLO GAMBINO, MIKE MIRANDA, SANTO TRAFFICANTE Jr and DOMINICK ALONGI. After being interviewed, all the arrested were issued Grand Jury subpoenas and thereafter in lieu of 100 thousand US dollars bail each as material witnesses. DOMINICK ALONGI, when arrested, had 282 dollars in his possession. He claimed that he is self employed as a designer of ladies hats. He refused to answer any further questions. Some possible reasons for the meeting (according to the report):
* Someone within Cosa Nostra is on trial.
* TONY "DUCKS" CORALLO (although not present) had told individuals close to him that the meeting was about him. An informant described CORALLO as the successor of LUCCHESE. LUCCHESE who was dying, wanted the other bosses to recognize CORALLO as his successor [much in the same way TOMMY GAGLIANO had done back in 1951 when the Commission was asked to approve LUCCHESE as GAGLIANO´s successor]. CORALLO had also told an informant that "there is a big problem in Florida and they are trying to divide something up down there". [This could explain why TRAFFICANTE was present at the meeting.]
* Another informant stated that he knew for a fact that CARLOS MARCELLO was having trouble with TRAFFICANTE and SAM GIANCANA concerning something Mafia related.
* The meeting was about certain individuals who in spite of the no drug rule, in fact were still engaged in narcotics trafficking.
* Several informants claimed that the meeting was about the BONANNO situation and to find a replacement for GASPARE DIGREGORIO, an unsatisfactory solution to the Bonanno Family´s power vacuum.
* The meeting was about to announce TOMMY RYAN as the new head of the Genovese Family.
* The meeting was called because MARCELLO and other leaders of the the smaller Families were seeking approval from the Commission to make new members. [This reason was not mentioned in the report but mentioned elsewhere.]
The arrested individuals were brought in front of a Grand Jury investigating the La Stella incident. And although all of them were granted immunity, they refused to give testimony on what the meeting was about. The case dragged on, mostly due to lawyers´ successful attempts to postpone the hearings by questioning the legitimacy of charging the 13 individuals for contempt. Also illness of CARLO GAMBINO and some of the defense attorneys, delayed the hearings. In February of 1967, Judge EDWARD THOMPSON, in accord with Queens County District Attorney´s Office and attorney´s for the arrestees, agreed that the original subpoena contained ambiguities. The subpoena was therefore quashed. This delayed the case even further. A new subpoena was issued. In May of 1967, MARCELLO, CORALLO and TRAFFICANTE dutifully answered questions in front of the Grand Jury but without revealing anything of importance. They were discharged. EBOLI, MIRANDA, CARILLO and ALONGI served the DA with papers enjoining further proceedings. These papers issued by a US District Court Judge in the EDNY upon allegation that the four of them have had their civil rights violated. Later, just like MARCELLO, COROLLO and TRAFFICANTE, also DELLACROCE, GALLO and COLOMBO answered questions and the indictments against them were dismissed. On 6/27/67 Supreme Court Justice ANTHONY LIVOTTI dismissed the indictments concerning ALONGI, CARILLO, EBOLI and MIRANDA. But the DA filed a motion for appeal.
- A somewhat funny incident occured in early 1969. Innocent residents at an address in Teaneck, NJ. (former address of ALONGI), received a letter addressed to DOMINICK ALONGI. This letter was forwarded to the FBI and stated:
On the flap of the envelope was typed "Boss of Boss´s, is my song". My guess is that the sender was a "civilian" who had followed the ALONGI/MIRANDA et al in the La Stella Restaurant case and was his idea of a practical joke. And also, according to a complaint filed with the NJPD, someone had thrown a rock about the size of a golf ball through an upstairs bedroom window of ALONGI´s former house. Another postcard addressed to ALONGI stated:
- A criminal contempt case concerning ALONGI was set after he apparently refused to answer questions in front of a Grand Jury summer of 1969. But it seems that his case was postpoened. To my knowledge, it was never brought to trial.
- In November, 1969 ALONGI was admitted to Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ and treated for coronay insufficiency.
- In 1971, ALONGI was stockholder and listed vice president of Jaynor, Inc. In that year, Jaynor, Inc. had arranged for a 12 million dollar loan through the Carner Bank of Miami Beach, Florida to Vindom, Inc., a company who built and developed the Colony Club Apartments in Miami. ALONGI was also listed president with this construction company. Both companys were also leasing Cadillacs, Chryslers and Mercedes Benzes.
- In early 1972, ALONGI moved from his residence in North Miami to a home in Briarcliff Manor, NY.
- Regarding TOMMY RYAN; although seemingly the acting boss, he never got along well with JERRY CATENA and there were mutual dislike between them. TOMMY RYAN was a very nasty type individual who made a lot of enemies over the years, according to informant. He was credited with having been responsible for the killing of TONY BENDER, which was one of the reasons why Genovese members disliked him. [Funny how tides had changed now when Vito Genovese was no longer alive.] Informant recalled that quite a few months ago VINCENT GIGANTE had a dispute with PATTY RYAN, the brother of TOMMY ruled in favor of his brother. CHIN was very excited about this. [PATTY RYAN was the captain of the Greenwich Village crew who I believe was shelved, and later killed, after the murder of TOMMY RYAN on July 16, 1972.]
- ALONGI´s father in law was ROCCO "BURRY" PERINO, an individual who has been mentioned as a Genovese member although I have not seen any evidence of this. I remember an old article by ALLAN MAY (in the ask ANDY section) saying PERINO was a Coney Island based Genovese soldier. However, PERINO lived at 131 Mulberry Street (Little Italy section of Manhattan). Any information on PERINO is appreciated.
- Informant advised (September 1972) that GIGANTE was now in contol of the crew. However, Alongi was emerging as the big man and his strong position stemmed from a recent argument he had with GIGANTE from which ALONGI apparently came out the winner. According to a FBI report, dual control is being utilized with ALONGI and GIGANTE and that one of these individuals will be chosen as [what seems to be] the offical leader of the crew. DOM ALONGI was identified as the captain later in 1973. A report on the Genovese hierarchy dated in April of 1974 said that the crew was formerly headed by GIGANTE. This could mean the GIGANTE was the first successor to PATTY RYAN but for some reason stepped down, possibly demoted, which lead to ALONGI´s elevation in 1973.
- According to informants, ALONGI was made through the sponsorship of GIGANTE and was known as a crude shylock throughout lower Manhattan who was the only shylock, according to informant, who collected on Christmas Day.
- Regarding MARIO GIGANTE; informant advised in June 1973 "MARIO meets frequently with ALONGI and FRANK CAGGIANO to discuss various illegal gambling activities. MARIO has an apartment he occasionally uses at 202 6th Avenue for telephone calls. MARIO controls several wire rooms in NJ, atleast a couple in lower Manhattan and possibly one in the Bronx or Yonkers." According to same informant, JIMMY "NAP" NAPOLI also frequently visited the crew´s headquarters in Greenwich Village to discuss gambling operations.
- In addition to being a loanshark, bookmaker and running a policy game, ALONGI was also described as a heavy dealer in untaxed cigarettes from North Carolina. Apparently, during one trip to North Carolina, he was in the company of ALLEN DORFMAN (from Chicago), FRANK RAGANO (attorney for SANTO TRAFFICANTE as well as for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in Florida), CALVIN KOVENS (a builder of shopping centers, hospitals and large apartment complexes; previously convicted along with JAMES HOFFA) and others. The part is heavily redacted so I don´t know what the purpose was for these men to get together. But it could be that ALONGI and KOVENS whose wife was into real estate, wanted to acquire a favorable loan from the union´s pension fund. ALONGI had previously been into construction of a apartment complex in Miami, Florida. KOVENS is an interesting figure. In 1974 he was being investigated by the Watergate investigators who leraned that a $30,000.00 dollar contribution to president NIXON´s campaign manager JOHN MITCHELL had helped KOVENS get an early release from prison.
- In 1973, ALONGI moved to 8 Morton Street in the Greenwich Village area.
- ALONGI crew members (according to FBI report dated April 1974): FRANK CAGGIANO, DOMINICK DI QUARTO, PATSY EBOLI, VINCENT GIGANTE, MARIO GIGANTE. Crew members according to other sources: JAMES BATTAGLIA, JOSEPH CATALDO, LARRY DENTICO, PAOLO FRACCACRETA, MIKE MAIONE, LOUIS "BOBBY" MANNA, GAETANO "TOMMY" MUSTO, MIKE NICCOLENE, JOSEPH PAGANO, PATSY PAGANO, JOSEPH STANCANELLI, PETER STANCANELLI (??), JOHNNY STOPELLI. Another made guy may have been ANTHONY "BLACKIE" PICCORILLO. Throughout the file, his name is spelled in varoius ways (PICCORICCO, PICCOROCCO, PICCIRILLO etc), so it´s hard to find info on him. Apparently born in 1913. According to informant, he was a "button guy". Another possible crew member may have been JOSEPH "PEPI" SANTANIELLO, a soldier who operated the S S Antonio Social Club located at 2104 2nd Avenue (East Harlem).
- Later in 1974, ALONGI is identified as acting boss due to TIERI´s illness. Not sure if the informant was correct. It could be that ALONGI actually was part of a ruling panel with ELI ZECCARDI and JOHN "BUSTER" ARDITO which was later identified by the FBI. But this was in 1975.
- According to informant (August 1974) "ALONGI has taken over all of TOMMY RYAN´s operations. He was one of the individuals who killed TONY BENDER about 10 years ago so that TOMMY RYAN could take over TONY BENDER´s operation."
- Known hangouts of ALONGI: Triangle Social Club (207 Sullivan Street), Soho Car Service (209 Sullivan Street), Lexington Social Club (Sullivan near Prince Streets), Pete´s Toys and Novelties (225 Sullivan Street), Village Purple Onion (135 West 3rd Street), Panel Social Club (208 Thompson Street).
- In 1975/1976, ALONGI and GIGANTE met with representatives of the Colombo Family. The part discussing this is heavily redacted. But CRAZY JOEY GALLO´s name is visible. The meetings may have been negotiations on transfers of ALBERT GALLO and PUNCHY ILLIANO from the Colombos to the Genoveses.
- Sorce advised ANNA GENOVESE, widow of the late boss, still resides in the vicinity of Greenwich Village and is now seriously ill. She is not now well regarded as she had treated neigborhood people very poorly when her husband was in power. She was being ignored by her old friends in her later years.
- On 3/31/1980, DOMINICK ALONGI died of an heart attack in Florida. He was waked at the Nucciarone Funeral Home, 177 Sullivan Street. From the time of his elevation to skipper, til he died, in his file, there is no mention of ALONGI being the Genovese Family consigliere, which may be what most of us thought that he was at some point. SAMMY GRAVANO testified that during a meeting with GIGANTE in 1976, he was told that ALONGI "was now the consigliere". He either misunderstood GIGANTE or simply misremembered. In 1976, ALONGI was part of a ruling panel, this according to a FBI report, which was dismantled sometime in 1977. Also a mistery is the status of GIGANTE. As I said, possibilities are that he may have been the captain of the crew briefly after the TOMMY RYAN murder. Another possibilty is that he coheaded the crew with ALONGI before ALONGI was given the spot in 1973. While ALONGI was on ruling panel, the most likely scenario is that GIGANTE was the acting skipper of his crew. In FBI documents, ALONGI was still listed as a capo when he died. This may mean that GIGANTE´s rise was more rapid than we have previously thought and debunk the myth that he was a skipper already in the 1960s.

Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
Great post. Some ver interesting info in it. I had no idea that Alongi was related to the NO Gagliano's. Another possible reason for the La Stella meeting was a leadership dispute in the NO family between the Marcello's and Anthony Corallo and Frank Gaglaino. If I remember right Corallo and Gagliano wanted Marcello to step down.

Didn't Cafaro also claim that Alongi was the Consiglieri? I seem to remember that.

I don´t remember. But if he did, it can probably be found in the "25 years after Valachi" report.Pogo The Clown wrote:From the time of his elevation to skipper, til he died, in his file, there is no mention of ALONGI being the Genovese Family consigliere, which may be what most of us thought that he was at some point. The claim that Alongi being the consigliere perhaps should not be dismissed. There´s a gap from mid 1977 to 1980 in his file when the FBI closed his case. But in the FBI document that said he had died of a heart attack, he is listed as a captain. Who knows, he may have been acting consigliere some time in that time frame.

HK,
I don't think I will bother to look for anything anymore. Just wait for you to put it here nicely. Really good work.
Do you know if Alongi's parents from Corleone as well? Gagliano's as we know are and that's before the connection of Majuri's to Gagliano's which B. has mentioned on here a while ago.

I don´t know his father´s name and time of arrival to America. That would definitely help in order to find out where exactly the Alongis came from. If somebody knows (at least his name), we could take a look on the libertyellisfoundation.org site.

Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
A bunch of Giuseppe Alongis found. So it need to be narrowed down even further. This entry seems to be best match (if the father was from the Palermo province and around the town of Corleone, and if the father entered US via New York, and was born in Italy, and entered sometime prior to the 1920s):Antiliar wrote:Name: Dominick Joseph AlongiHairyKnuckles wrote:Thanks!toto wrote:HK,

Giuseppe Alongi, 27 years old, arrived in 1902 from Cefala Diana (village located between the city of Palermo and Corleone). Married. He stated that he was heading to relatives in New Orleans.
Can´t find any entry on a Philipaso, or Filipaso, or Fillipaso, or Fillipasso etc.

Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
Cefala Diana would be a good location since many New Orleans members were from Corleone and that was near it. Saverio Pollaccia also came from there.
Something else of interest is that "Dom the Sailor" DeQuarto is listed as part of his crew, but Valachi said that DeQuarto was a caporegime himself. If that's true then he was demoted.

Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
Doesn't get more thorough than this. I've learned a ton about the Genovese family through your posts. Thanks!
If the Alongis were originally from the general Corleone area that'd make me curious if his relatives were tied to the old Morello family. Not too many of those post-1930s.

Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
I believe Morello traveled there in the 1890's, returned again in 1902ish and in 1908 had written a letter to the NO Boss consenting for him to "reorganize" the "Family." But he was the BOB during that time and Lupo also appeared to have connections there.
Re: Dominick Joseph "Fat Dom" Alongi
I think the last name would probably be Filipazzo. I notice several people in New York by that surname who originally came from Agrigento, esp. Porto Empedocle.HairyKnuckles wrote: Can´t find any entry on a Philipaso, or Filipaso, or Fillipaso, or Fillipasso etc.
