Sammy Aparo was shelved by Barney and Genovese members showed up to his wake. I guess it depends.
I always thought that Genovese members were allowed to attend out of respect for Sammy’s son who was a made guy also.

In reference to Frank so many members from all families showing up to a funeral for a guy who was on the shelf for so long is very odd. Maybe there’s more to it we don’t know.
Vito Grimaldi was on the shelf. When Pennisi and Anthony Guzzo had that fight with the Genovese crew Jamie Delio who was on the shelf was there with Ralph Balsamo. Pennisi also mentioned a time his captain asked him to go see Frank Lastorino to send him a message. I'm sure there are different cases out there but it seems pretty clear there is typically some communication between the family and the shelved member.

Yeah there are plenty of examples and of course there is some communication between the family and the guys on the shelf. Pete Lovaglio was on the shelf and wired up when he went to Joe Cammaranos house to talk to him! I think what happened here is that Lastorino was liked by mostly everyone and people didn’t agree with him being on the shelf. He was a stand up guy who did a ton of work but Vic had a hard on for him and there’s nothing anyone could do about it. So many guys from all families showing up to pay respects is a rebuke of Amuso and his decision to shelve Frank.

Look at the Merlino situation. Amuso and Madonna said not to recognize or meet with him but half the Family is lining up for their next hangout.

Do we know up until when Pennisi had him shelved?

Being on the shelf doesn't prevent members paying respects at a funeral, IIRC?
I think the confusing verbiage in the article is:

"But sources on both sides of the law say the crime family's punishment against Big Frank wasn't permanent."

The punishment being the shelving, and the article saying he only had a problem with his family for a few years, makes it sound like he was shelved for only a short time. That would be peculiar in my book. So the issue to me is not whether going to a funeral proves anything, but whether Capece and his claimed sources "on both sides of the law" are full of it.

There was also the story of Pennisi going to Dom Truscello's house and getting introduced to Anthony Grado who was on the shelf.

Lastorino was shelved at some point after the Patty Testa hit and around the time when Gas flipped.Pennisi inferred this when saying that Vic was angry and wanted someone to blame so it was Frankie who was in prison by this time.I think that was in the video which is titled Frankie Lastorino shelved.Lastorino never came of the shelf.Capeci either doesn’t know about what Pennisi said or is refusing to acknowledge it which is what has led to this discussion on this thread

Vincent Manzo attended a Colombo family wedding in 2007 while he was on the shelf because his son balked on a debt to Joe Competiello. Just thought I’d add that to the list.
I don't know dick about dick.
