Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Accused was getaway driver in Montreal Mafia leader Sollecito's murder, jury hears
• Massari is alleged to have acted as a middleman between brothers Andrea and Salvatore Scoppa, two leaders of a Calabrian clan, and those who were willing to carry out their orders to kill many people tied to the Sicilian clan during 2016.
• The informant, told the jury he first met Massari at the Cowansville Institution around 2013. “One of my friends mandated me to protect Massari. (It was) Piero Arena, who is dead now — he asked me to render a service for him,” the informant said. “Jonathan Massari had problems behind the walls (inside Cowansville). The informant named Arsène (BM) Mompoint, “a man who is now dead,” as one of the underworld figures who wanted to harm Massari. “There were other people from street gangs who wanted to get him,” the informant said.
• The informant said he did not participate in the murder of Lorenzo Giordano, but that Massari told him an accomplice named Dominico Scarfo was the gunman who killed Giordano, on March 1, 2016, while Massari acted as the getaway driver. The informant also testified about how he personally shot Sollecito, in Laval on May 27, 2016, before jumping on the back of a motorcycle driven by Massari.
• The informant told the jury that, as part of a plan, he waited on a bench at a bus stop on a road Sollecito used when he left his home. Scarfo was in a vehicle in front of Sollecito’s, the informant said, and forced their target to make a complete stop at the intersection where the bus stop was located. When Sollecito’s sport utility vehicle came to a complete stop, “I looked him in the eye and then I got up,” the informant said, adding the first bullet he fired broke the front passenger window of Sollecito’s vehicle. “I didn’t hesitate. I emptied the loading clip,” the informant said. “I emptied it into his body.” He said Massari was waiting nearby on the motorcycle and they sped off after he hopped on.
• The informant told the jury he was also the gunman who killed the Falduto brothers on June 30, 2016.
“(Massari) said (the brothers) wanted to kill me to get to Massari and Sal Scoppa. That is why Massari asked me to do it,” the informant said. “That was his story, but I didn’t believe it. “The brothers, Vinny and Joey, I didn’t want to do them at all — not at all. I saw nothing negative in them at all.” The day of the murder, Massari back out when the ambush began. “He got scared. He didn’t want to do it,” the informant said, adding he shot Vincenzo Falduto first and felt he had to kill Giuseppe Falduto as well after Massari backed out. He alleged that Massari helped plan the ambush and helped clean up the crime scene. After he killed the brothers, the informant said, he soon came to regret what he did and told Massari that he was sure Massari had lied to him. “I cried. I didn’t know why I had done it,” he said. “It was two innocent people (killed) for nothing. Yes, they were involved in organized crime, but they had done nothing. They weren’t a part of the war. They were collateral damage.”
• The prosecution witness also said Massari was supposed to kill at least one of the brothers in order to become Salvatore Scoppa’s capo, a rank within the Mafia.

“You absolutely have to kill one”
• Jonathan Massari wanted to become the lieutenant of the mafioso Salvatore Scoppa and the latter ordered him to "kill one" to prove himself.
• This ACI, who began to testify on Monday, said that Massari told him of having taken part in the murder of Lorenzo Giordano, killed in Laval in March 2016, and of having driven the getaway vehicle which was used for the shooter.
• It was the ACI that killed Rocco Sollecito the following May. He said that the very morning of the murder, he and Massari went to the latter's brother-in-law to retrieve firearms. While handling one of them, the accused accidentally fired a bullet into a wall of the garage. Subsequently, Massari rode the ACI on motorbikes, before and after Sollecito's assassination.
• The witness said that on the day of the murders of Vincenzo and Giuseppe Falduto, committed on the grounds of Marie-Josée Viau and Guy Dion in Saint-Jude, it was Massari who was to kill the two brothers, but that the latter "squealed", and that it was the ACI itself that killed the Faldutos.
• After the crime, ACI and Massari met Salvatore Scoppa in a cemetery, and ACI tricked Scoppa into believing that it was Massari who murdered the two brothers. “Salvatore took Massari in his arms,” described the witness.
• “Massari told me that he had to do these murders to become Salvatore's capo. Massari did not kill Giordano and Sollecito himself. He had Marco Campellone, a neighbor, shot, but he didn't do it himself. Salvatore Scoppa wanted him to kill one absolutely to prove himself, he said: make your bones , ”added the former hitman.
• “Sal was a psychopath. For him, killing people and eating a sandwich was the same thing,” said the witness in particular about Salvatore Scoppa.
• He said the killers scouted for a while to eliminate Nicola Spagnolo and Vito Salvaggio, two names that appeared on the menu, but eventually killed Rocco Sollecito first because he was the easiest target. and the highest paying ($300,000).
• He said it was the Salvatore brothers and Andrew Scoppa who came up with the list, but in reality it was Vittorio Mirarchi who was pulling the strings amid the conflict between the Calabrian and Sicilian clans of the Montreal mafia.
• The ACI claims to have warned the SQ in 2018 that Salvatore Scoppa was going to be killed during his son's first communion, and claims that the killer, who allegedly acted on behalf of Jonathan Massari and Vittorio Mirarchi, is "a black of Toronto"
• The informant criticized the police for having ended the investigation in October 2019 and that if they had let him, Massari would have been accused of more murders and conspiracies than he could have been, police could've arrested Andrew Scoppa, Charlie Renda and people at the management table of the Montreal Mafia.
• The witness also stated twice during his testimony that Massari called a source, a woman who worked at the Guy-Favreau complex, and whom he believes worked for the authorities.

Thx for keeping us updated insane how relatively little coverage this trial has been getting
If this where NY imagine the press coverage. Hell when some mob asshole sets a car on fire for $400 it’s front page

Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Interesting that Massari's ambition of being a "capo" under Sal Scoppa comes up in both articles. Confirms that it wasn't reporter error in coverage of the Scarfo trial. I wonder what Massari meant by using that term, whether it was allegorical or an exaggeration (which I think is more likely) or if he was talking about being assigned a rank within a specific group.

So mirarchi was the one calling the shots?
That’s the guy, Adriana. My Uncle Tony. The guy I’m going to hell for.
Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
I think because the Scoppas were trying to take over all of Montreal, so Massari would be a capo if Scoppa was the boss I guess?chin_gigante wrote: ↑Tue Oct 11, 2022 3:30 pm Interesting that Massari's ambition of being a "capo" under Sal Scoppa comes up in both articles. Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Really? We are debating whether the term capo is used now? I think he's the only guy that has been caught using that term so I think he self appointed the term to himself.

Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Massari becoming a capo under Sal Scoppa after the Falduto murders is a pretty significant revelation. We've heard of guys being cell leaders and others sitting at "the leadership table" but we haven't really gotten any insight into what organization these guys in Montreal belong to now. The conflict has been painted as Sicilian vs Calabrian and therefore Cosa Nostra vs Ndrangheta but now we're finding out the Calabrian side used terminology specific to Cosa Nostra structure. Of course we're still in the dark with a lot of things regarding Montreal but imo it shows the Scoppas identified more with Cosa Nostra whether or not they were actual members. It's the first little glimpse inside we've has in a long time.

Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Should note that "capo" is used by the 'Ndrangheta as well, i.e. capobastone and capo crimine. No doubt he wouldn't be either of those, but it is an Italian word used by different organizations to mean chief / leader / boss as well as lieutenant. Whatever he was referring to was likely a lieutenant role more like Cosa Nostra's use of capodecina but would be great to know exactly what he was referring to.
Re: Trial of Jonathan Massari
Does the Ndrangheta use just "capo" though? I haven't come across that that's why I said a cosa nostra specific term. Maybe Calabrianwatch can chime in or someone else who is more informed on the Ndrangheta.
Whatever the case it's still a nice little glimpse into the structure of one part of the Montreal mafia.
