Yeah, 'cause that's worked just fine with alcohol and tobacco.

Taking the necessary measures, which too many would consider "extreme," the government could virtually stop the drug trade. But people don't have the stomach for it so we get what we've always gotten. It's only a losing war because how we've always fought it.

Governments all over the world are losing the War on Drugs, regardless of how hard they crack down. Some countries will execute people for possession of small amounts of drugs, but there is still a thriving drug trade in those countries. How would it be any different here?

1) Execute drug traffickers

2) Mandatory rehab for drug addicts (1st time around), later use or any crimes related to drugs get heavy prison sentences, i.e. decades in prison

3) Use the same drone technology we've used against terrorist groups in the Middle East to wipe out the cartels in Mexico

4) Actual effective border enforcement

Just through sheer attrition, with enough traffickers dead and enough users rotting in prison, will make the difference.

They said the same thing about Vietnam: "Just kill enough of them and we'll win this thing in no time." We all saw how well that worked out.

Vietnam was winnable, and the US was winning, until the government and public decided it didn't want to (thank you, Walter Cronkite). But that's another story.

For prescription drugs which is a huge market and deadly , you would be executing Pharma CEOs, Doctors and poor senior citizen, cancer, AIDS patients who are the traffickers in that trade.

The problem is that if you tax legal drugs too much, the black market continues to thrive. People are willing to pay a little more to buy drugs legally, but at a certain point it makes more sense to take the risk of buying from a dealer. States are learning this the hard way with legalized weed.
