Re: Detroits Chaldean mafia
I first read about them in the 1996 book The New Ethnic Mobs by William Kleinknecht. He touched on them while talking about the Detroit LCN. Worked a lot with the Italians in the city in gambling, at least back in the day. But also into their own criminal enterprises. Another ethnic group trying to grab their piece of the pie.
All roads lead to New York.
Re: Detroits Chaldean mafia
I know a Chaldean from Iraq who lost everything from the American invasion to the rise of isis.
I know they are a ethnorelihious group of Iraqi Catholics that don’t consider themselves Arabs. Ironically very republican for an immigrant group and that the first Chaldean mobs started appearing in America in the 80s from immigration from saddams Iraq

The Chaldean mob (or those associated with) are one of the largest benefactors of the legalization of marijuana in the state of Michigan. Operating, financing and shaking down illegal marijuana grow-ops (12+ plants). Grow-ops are high ROI, have weak penalties, and have little if any law enforcement attention or budget dedicated to them. Consumption of weed in both legal and "grey" markets has risen in the state. Natural fit.
Largest benefactors of the legalization? Residents of the state of Michigan, of course.

Re: Detroits Chaldean mafia
I’d imagine the Detroit Chaldeans have some rough dudes they can call on if necessary. In Chicago, there are some Chaldeans also, but a much larger population of Assyrians, who are a very closely related ethnic group to the Chaldeans (also northern Iraqi Christians, but they speak a slightly different dialect of Aramaic as compared to the Chaldeans and their churches had a schism in the 1700s). Assyrians have a deserved reputation in Chicago as having some truly savage gangbangers; I’ve known a few really wild, thugged-out Assyrians in my time, like a co-worker I had years back who repeatedly tried to sell me AK-47s and was fired and arrested after loudly threatening to decapitate another employee. There is a corollary organization on the Northside of Chicago to the Latin Kings, composed of Assyrians, called the Almighty Assyrian Kings (I believe they evolved from a 70s era gang called the Assyrian Eagles, who had a very violent reputation and eventually came under the influence of the Albany Park Latin Kings). At least back when I was on the street, those dudes were no joke and were not guys you’d want to run into; extremely hostile gangbangers who were quick to fight or shoot over any little thing. Assyrians and Chaldeans are clannish and insular, not just in the US but back in Iraq (as a religious and ethnic minority there), which I would assume gives a strong cultural framework for OC networks to form. I have no idea if their Detroit cousins are involved in similar levels of super grimey streetgang activity, I’m assuming the Detroit guys here would know.
And yeah, many of their chicks are absolute smokeshows, but you have to deal with their completely insane brothers, cousins, uncles, etc in addition to the father. Good luck lol.

Re: Detroits Chaldean mafia
Jeremy,
The Chaldean Mob has been around for quite some time. Louis Akrawi was the head for awhile and Kalasho was a big name as well. They run quite a few scams and drugs from here to San Diego. Most of the ones I know in West Bloomfield brag about being on Bridge cards, yet live in a $600K home, driving a Mercedes or Escalade.
Louis Akrawi son Victor bought a coffee shop from a Tony Pal associate in Clinton Twp called Ciao on Garfield. He’s since shut the doors I believe. But he used to run gambling in the back.
Ray Jihad owns Target Sports shooting range in West Bloomfield. I believe it’s in his wife’s name. He was on Hardcore Pawn. He kicked Les out and lost his shit when they asked for a deal.
Peter Tocco (not Gotti) married a Chaldean girl from Farmington or West Bloomfield. I can’t remember which. He runs Renaissance Painting company with her. I believe he still runs book on the side. You would have to ask Scott though.
My Aunt who is married in is half Syrian/Lebanese. The dialect is very similar to Iraqi’s. I learned how to speak and understand Arabic from her. It really surprises them when I respond in Arabic. I always hang back and wait to see if there gonna talk shit before I let them know I can speak it. Lol.

Re: Detroits Chaldean mafia
Yeah back in the day(fifteen years ago) I used to correspond with Kleinknecht and get his insight on the Detroit mob. He was a reporter for the Detroit Free Press in the late 80s-early 90s and did a lot of the reporting on the early 90s Detroit mob cases. He had a lot of interesting information. Like he had seen the transcripts of that civil suit Jack Tocco brought against Vincent Piersante back in the 70s and Piersante got to list all of the crimes/murders Tocco was suspected of being involved in to prove that Piersante couldn't possibly have defamed him by publicly linking him to the Detroit mafia. He said it was fascinating and hoped it still existed somewhere. He also let me know of specific times he was told by his editors not to mention Jack Tocco in articles because they didn't want to get sued. Which also fit a pattern.Wiseguy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 12:37 pm I first read about them in the 1996 book The New Ethnic Mobs by William Kleinknecht. But for the Chaldeans, yeah he specifically mentions in his book Eddie Samouna and Fred Salem as working with the Detroit mob. Salem is well known but Samouna not so much. Samouna pops up in the early 90s for running an illegal gambling club in Detroit, and getting busted at another gambling spot at a house in Farmington Hills. He was an amazing horse handicapper. He ends up getting banned from all horse tracks in 1991. But in 1992 he's running the horse betting facility at the Viejas Casino by San Diego. Not sure when that ended. Which sounds like typical shady as hell Detroit stuff. Now I only have one person who mentioned this once, but they said Samouna may have had something to do with the murder of Manuel Yatooma in Detroit in 1993. Yatooma owned a bunch of convenience stores in the Detroit area and also a multi million dollar numbers operation. The story his family tells is that Yatooma interrupted guys doing a carjacking outside one of his stores and ended up getting shot twice in the head. But there's a 2011 article where Detroit police homicide officers specifically say it was a planned murder. That the shooters(multiple) were waiting for him. But I have nothing backing up that Samouna was involved.
But that Yatooma murder actually does end up being mentioned in the 1998 Jack Tocco trial. One of the numbers operators that Nove Tocco and Paul Corrado were extorting was George Yatooma. There's a point when Yatooma is testifying and it's explained that his numbers operation increased because he got a lot of customers when his cousin was murdered. And Tocco's lawyers use that reference as one of the reasons for their appeal. That an unrelated murder got brought up during testimony. Court ignored that but it's a small world apparently. For all we know the Manuel Yatooma murder could have been a Detroit mob hit.

Nice info. Was Freddie Salem Chaldean/Assyrian? I always thought he was Arab (Syrian or Lebanese), but I’ll admit to not knowing much about him.Adam wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 3:21 pmYeah back in the day(fifteen years ago) I used to correspond with Kleinknecht and get his insight on the Detroit mob. Freddy Salem was Lebanese.
