Just to help run the crew, he was promoted to official captain the following summer and that's when Pisciotti was upped to acting, mostly as a way of keeping an eye on the cooperators' former guys.

And when he got promoted to official captain, the crew was split between Basciano and Cicale, or it went completely to Cicale? If it went completely to him, then I understand his logic in thinking that Basciano was the boss in all but name by that point (which he suggests in his book).

Something else I hadn't thought of is that Montagna may have been "elected" by the family capos, but was nominated by Basciano. When a boss is chosen someone has to put his name up first and then everyone else votes on it. Just about every time I've heard about this process, the vote is heavily "fixed", meaning someone has gone around to the capos before the meeting and checked in to make sure many of them vote for a particular candidate. Since the family didn't have a boss at that time, they may have done something similar for the acting boss.

edit:
Just to provide examples:

- After the Castellano murder, the conspirators went around making sure the vote would be for Gotti.
- Scarfo met with family capos to get their support as boss.
- The vote for Massino to replace Rastelli was set up in advance, similar to the Gotti meeting.
- Don't know the details, but you can figure Carmine Persico replacing Tommy DiBella was like this.

I am thinking back to some of the excerpts from Massino's tapes that got released and I feel like there was something about how Massino had arranged for a panel (including Basciano) and Basciano had taken it upon himself to become either the leader of the panel or the acting boss, which Massino questioned and ultimately accepted. Maybe someone remembers seeing that, too.

Thanks. I know Bascaino took several liberties (clipping Pizzolo, elevating Mancuso to Acting UnderBoss and Rabito to Acting Consiglieri, etc) without consulting Massino after becoming Acting Boss but I don't recall him appointing himself the Acting Boss.

It wasn´t split. The succession line is:

- Basciano
- Cicale
- Pisciotta
- Louie "Cigars" Mele
- Joseph "JB" Indelicato
There you have it, never printed before.

According to one article, Massino informed Basciano through his attorney that he was being promoted and Basciano was overjoyed, promising not to let him down.

Not to my knowledge. He took over from Mele when he died in 2007. His nephew, Anthony Bruno Indelicato was a captain in the early 80s, but demoted after the three capos were murdered.

Thanks. That was how I remembered it. From what I remember the lawyer delivered the message two weeks after Urso was indicted.

Interesting. I don't recall Mele annd Indelicato being Capos. Do you remember when it was reported? Thanks.

Sorry, I don´t remember when exactly it was reported but both Mele and Indelicato were put to be under Basciano when he broke off from DeFilippo´s crew in around 2002. The others were Joseph Torre, Frank Coppa Jr, Anthony Donato, Joseph Lino, Gino Galestro, Perry Criscitelli, Anthony Bruno and Joseph Sabella, Later, others were made into Basciano´s crew like Pisciotta, Tony Aiello and Mike DiMaria.

That may very well have been the case.

I thought Cicale's statement about Massino and Vito Rizzuto opening up a strip club in Montreal in order to test Vito's allegiance was very interesting. That doesn't seem like something he pulled out of his ass.

Thanks guys for looking up more details about the Basciano acting boss promotion. Pretty sure I'm mixed up on that and I can't find anything to back up the bit about him elevating himself... was probably thinking about his "executive decisions" he made without Massino's approval, of which there were many.

The whole Bruno promotion was a strange decision. I understand he had pulled off an important hit, but guys have always done that without getting major promotions. They promoted a big capo's young son to capo of a different crew and were upset when this became a powerful rival faction? What did they expect?
