Canarsie really isn't that bad now. There's just black people living there now, that's it. Big deal. Lot of first generation Caribbean immigrants that run businesses or have city jobs. I generally agree , the east side can be rough but the rest is pretty nice, higher middle income worker class.

From visiting the area, my impression was that it really does vary a lot by block in Canarsie. The area by the Rockaway Pkwy stop I thought was particularly unappealing, though still not on the level of the really bad parts of BK. Farther in towards the water matches newera’s description, apart from the immediate vicinity of the PJs there (which is true of the PJs anywhere in NYC; see Throggs Neck). There are local knuckleheads from the neighborhood, of course, but Canarsie is a pretty small neighborhood that also has the misfortune of being located adjacent to some much rougher areas, IMO, so I wonder how much stupid shit there is local vs spillover (or how much the local idiots are influenced by proximity to the larger knucklehead concentrations in ENY, Brownsville, E Flatbush).
