Why Mancuso was chosen as boss?
In Raab's 5 Families,is written that until the beginning of the 2000s, the Bonanno family didn't have rats, but starting from 2003 many made men such Vitale, Tartaglione, D'Amico began to flips and how Massino faced various accusations of murder decided to flip and framed Vincent Basciano.so in 2004 75 mobsters or associates was imprisoned.
The question is: why Mancuso? Was a powerful capo or simple was the only made man on the streets that had some power or relations to be choose as boss?

He was an acting underboss to Basciano and beford that, he was a soldier. He stepped up to AB after Vinny Gorgeous was arrested.
From what I understand, he was the last man standingn with any sort of position at the time and the only one crazy enough to want it.

I think it was Tony Green then Vinny Bascaino then Sal Montagna and then Mikey Nose. Massino picked Tony Green and approved of Bascaino although he didn’t really pick him. Bascaino went away and picked Sal then Sal gets deported and Vinny picked Mikey Nose. He wasn’t the proverbial last man standing but he was close to Vinny so that’s why he chose him.

When Massino was arrested in 2003, he left a panel consisting of Anthony Urso, Peter Calabrese, and Joseph Cammarano Sr. Calabrese was taken down from the panel later in 2003. Urso also held the position of acting consigliere and Cammarano was acting underboss. Urso may also have been acting boss, but Massino strongly denied ever leaving him in that position.
When Urso and Cammarano were arrested in 2004, Vincent Basciano made himself acting boss and sent word to Massino, who decided to leave him in the position and not take him down. Basciano made Mancuso acting underboss and Anthony Rabito the acting consigliere.
When Basciano was arrested in November 2004, he left Mancuso as the acting boss. Mancuso was in charge on the street until he was arrested in 2006, but he was still running the family. Montagna was acting boss after Mancuso.

I wonder about this. Massino's lawyer flipped and he claimed that about two weeks after Urso and Cammarano were indicted he delivered a message to Basciano that he was being chosen as the Acting boss and how Basciano was surprised and grateful. Caepci. Covered it in one of his columns from that period. I think it was just a miscommunication somewhere along the line.

Mancuso must have had the backing of the Westside. There the Angelo prisco tapes of him speaking highly of mancuso
Re: Why Mancuso was chosen as boss?
I was under the impression the family was in disarray and Vinnie B. just assumed acting boss status. Someone had to grab the wheel and my guess is the smart guys didn’t want to be the ne t big target. Mikey Nose was close to Vinnie.

From reading the book on vinny gorgeous I think the fact that Mancuso was a total savage not unlinked vinny gorgeous probably helped Mancusos case. Also the families that still have Bronx factions seem to have beefs with guys from the other Burroughs and they were both Bronx guys. The bonnanos not to the extent of the Luke's but it seems like it may still be a thing.

I think his reputation helped and there may have been a bias against promoting anyone too close to Massino for both internal family politics as well as the other NY families could have played a role as to why the Bronx faction had so much influence in the admin since Massino has been off the streetsMason_dixon wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 10:32 am From reading the book on vinny gorgeous I think the fact that Mancuso was a total savage not unlinked vinny gorgeous probably helped Mancusos case. Definitely anything to distance themselves from big Joe. I like listening to frank fiordillino. He is a real ass dude just tells it like it is. He was big Joey's cell mate for a while.Southshore88 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 10:39 amI think his reputation helped and there may have been a bias against promoting anyone too close to Massino for both internal family politics as well as the other NY families could have played a role as to why the Bronx faction had so much influence in the admin since Massino has been off the streetsMason_dixon wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 10:32 am From reading the book on vinny gorgeous I think the fact that Mancuso was a total savage not unlinked vinny gorgeous probably helped Mancusos case. Re: Why Mancuso was chosen as boss?
Who knows the exact reason why, but I’d imagine not many Bonannos wanted to serve as boss after Massino flipped. I think Mancuso likely obtained the De Facto Boss position around 2005.

Re: Why Mancuso was chosen as boss?
I think I’ve also seen reports where it has been stated Mancuso was close to Vinny but in the recent Basciano thread it mentions how someone in the Bonnanos was complaining about Mancuso and Vinny told them to “do what you gotta do” and de facto approving a hit on him. Did these guys come up the ranks together?
Re: Why Mancuso was chosen as boss?
They had a falling out when Mancuso was acting boss. Going off memory I think it had something to do with Cicale.Uncle Pete wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 1:17 pmI think I’ve also seen reports where it has been stated Mancuso was close to Vinny but in the recent Basciano thread it mentions how someone in the Bonnanos was complaining about Mancuso and Vinny told them to “do what you gotta do” and de facto approving a hit on him.
