Aiello was at least an acting captain and possibly an official captain when he and Spirito gave a beating to Michael Meldish in 2011.

In either late 2011 or early 2012, Lovaglio and Joseph Sabella sat on a guy Sabella wanted to kill. Lovaglio was an official captain at that time and Sabella was his acting captain.

Also important to note that while nothing physical happened at the Coddington Club in 2012, it was a show of force involving captains. Aiello was then an official captain and acting consigliere, Lovaglio was a captain, and Anthony Fasitta was either an acting or official captain.

Capeci seems to be saying the Grimaldis continued paying tribute to Mancuso via their bakery and were in better standing than Cammarano. Strange they'd be on the shelf and passing along money from their legitimate business -- Vito Grimaldi paid large tribute to the Massino admin from his joker poker machines (one of the few operations the Family "officially" taxed) but it would be news if they've been sending up money from the bakery.

I find that part of the article the most confusing -- was Vito Grimaldi still on the shelf when he died or was he reinstated?

Yeah, that threw me off too. Grimaldi was still paying tribute from the bakery while he was on the shelf? I suppose that could be a thing where that was a condition of him being shelved (as opposed to worse), but I was wondering when I read this. As hilarious as the funeral fight scene was, and as nasty as the repercussions of that could wind up being even today, Capeci buried the lede a bit, I think, as Grimaldi dying is a big enough deal in itself.

So let me get this straight. Mancuso shelves four guys. Then forbids Joe C from going to his father in laws wake…who was also shelved. Then sends a senior citizen mobster to administer a beat down that goes about as well as you would think. And now, it seems, the Bonanno guys are looking like fools while Joe C and his biker buddies are probably laughing and texting links to this gangland column.

Capeci has since edited and said Aiello denies being there

Apparently these two are the only guys in the family who can throw a punch.

I'd still be surprised if such senior members were sent to tune Joe C. It looks terrible to the other families and it would be much more a disrespect to have associates, ie non family members, work Joe over.

Additionally if they were sent to work Joe over it was terribly thought out. They would've known Dino was there, vitos son Joseph, and many more family members and you send two guys and a 65yr old?

Just doesn't make much sense.

Rough month for the Cammarano's. Joe and Dino's sister passed away the same week as Vito. She passed on the 14th, Vito on the 16th.

It was actually a Royal Rumble to decide who would be the next consigliere. The bikers won.

Sources say that Cammarano, 62, his brother Dino, 63, and the bikers who came to Joe C's aid, left at least a trio of Bronx-based mobsters, capos John (Johnny Mulberry) Sciremammano, 65, Ernest (Ernie) Aiello, 42, and soldier John Spirito, Jr. 40, bloodied and battered on the floor of the funeral parlor when they left.

The sources say Mancuso banned Joe C from showing up at the wake for his dad-in-law, Vito Grimaldi — and ordered a crew of loyalists to make him suffer the consequences if he didn't heed the boss's directive.

Spirito Jr., backed up by a handful of mobsters
I take it there was more than just Aiello, Spirito, and Sciremammano that were there to dish out the beating given the way Capeci wrote it. A crew and handful of mobsters sounds like more than 3 to me but who knows.

The Zio Toto that Pennisi always mentions is the SI location near Big Johns cigar bar not the Brooklyn one across from Baci but it’s same owners so you’re not wrong.
Yep, I know he talks about the SI location. He was asked about the Bk location of Zio Toto during a live during the MBA & Button Man days, he dodged the question. A number of times he mentioned he would meet with other friends in Bay Ridge as well.

Sciremammano isn't Bronx-based so Capeci seems to be saying there were three Bronx guys in addition to the three named guys.

I picked up on that too. But Capeci has a fucking terrible grasp of the written word its hard to know the specifics. Was he referring to Spirito/Aiello/Mulberry as 'the crew of loyalists'? Was the 'handful of mobsters' referring to Aiello/Mulberry? Or were there plenty of associates there unnamed?
Its just so damn ambiguous.
