The latest in MBA/armchair podcast was a good interview with calabrese

He had a lotta interesting views about the outfit

They did not want there sons n family involved and The family was attempted to keep separate and legitimate rather then follow in there mafia traditions

Interesting how he said his fathers crew (who were the hitters) were almost kept secret where even outfit members didn’t allways know what they did. Big difference from NYC where everyone knows everything

He mentioned how most of the founders came from Brooklyn/NYC and he thinks they tried to seperste the self’s and make the outfit better then NYC

His comments on Chicago membership:

- Had to be 100% Italian and participate in murder to be made.
- Inducted new members "very seldom".
- You don't have to be Italian to be "part of the organization" in a general sense, cites Gus Alex who he says couldn't be "made" because he was non-Italian.
- Believes Jimmy Marcello's half-Irish heritage was "hidden".
- When someone was made it was "need to know" and they were very secretive/disciplined "like the military".

I enjoy Calabrese's interviews. Very well-spoken intelligent guy. I liked his book too.

Agreed about the quality of Frankie’s interviews. He’s lucid, well-spoken, and not trying to oversell his own involvement and knowledge.

I’ve brought it up before, but Jimmy Marcello was raised by his Italian stepmother, who was Mickey Marcello’s birth mother. From what I can tell his Irish mom was out of the family picture at a very early age. So, it could be that someone like Carlisi knew that Jimmy was half-Irish and kept it under raps, but it could also very well have been that everyone just thought that Jimmy was 100% Ital. When his stepmother died, Jimmy was listed as her son alongside Mickey on her obituary, not as a stepson.

The “need to know” thing about membership is really underscored by Nick Calabrese’s testimony, where he stated that he thought that acting capo Jimmy LaPietra basically broke protocol by telling Nick who was made in the 1988 ceremony (Snakes brought this up recently). My take is that probably only the captains were appraised of new inductees, and soldiers were only supposed to find out if and when they were formally introduced as “amico nostro”.

How would he know they induct members very seldom if it's need to know?

I always viewed jr as a coke head small time strong arm guy for his dad and only involved because of him. I don't think he knows all that much about the Outfit but he's really the only Chicago guy out there to interview so he's what we get.

While LE has done a lot of damage to Chicago and there's been general attrition, you don't hear anyone say they dumbed down the membership and brought in unqualified people. That's been a common sentiment among members/associates in other cities for decades, especially NYC, but can't think of any examples in Chicago.

It plays into what Frank Jr. has said about them preferring not to bring sons in -- we know they did bring in relatives sometimes but I think the greater point is nepotism played little role in the recruitment process and relatives had to be capable in their own right. Nick Calabrese for example was a cold-blooded killer, not just someone who came in on his brother's coattails.
