johnny_scootch wrote: ↑Wed Jun 01, 2022 4:26 am- Lovaglio had wanted Carrube and Gene Lombardo to go into business making frozen pizzas to be put in stores
- Lombardo, another Bonanno associate, was Carrube’s on and off partner in two or three different businesses and ran the pizzeria on Hylan Boulevard
Gene Lombardo takes over this pizzeria on Hylan from Carrube at some point and turns it into ‘The Square’ then he proceeds to steal the L&B recipe and ends up in a beef with Frank Guerra and the Colombo family.
Great catch. Was just going to come on and ask this. I looked up the Sharkey Square location (and pictures of their pizza) and said to myself... I think that's the same fucking place as "The Square" that got into the whole L&B beef with the Colombos. It looks like they were using the L&B formula from the beginning lmao - I know it sounds ridiculous to try and trademark putting sauce on top of the cheese, but from the jump this pizza was a blatant ripoff of L&B....it looks the exact same . I can see why the Colombos were mad
This guy's story is pretty crazy. His mob career. i always used to hate when you'd hear cooperators say everything is watered down, soft, "you should see the types of guys they are making today", etc... but this specific case here makes some of those old bitter rats sound validated
If a guys willing to pay 5k to get made just for protections even an idiot like me is willing to bet he’s gonna roll first chance he gets. You really can’t feel sorry for some of these idiots lol
That’s the guy, Adriana. My Uncle Tony. The guy I’m going to hell for.

The guy was an associate back in the 70's. 30-40 years as an associate tells you all you need to know.
It does raise an interesting question about mafia politics though. He was an associate. So he was on record with a member. The members job is to protect the associate.
Why Lovaglio started threatening this guy, why not run to his button and get the button to step in?
Anyone know who he was with?

Exactly. That whole thing sounded very odd. Maybe he was an on again/off again associate ... he didn't really sound too active , just sounded like (after his case in the early 90s) he was just trying to run his businesses and he happened to know some people from growing up where he did. He must have gotten lost in the shuffle or nobody really wanted to deal with him after he essentially cooperated in the 90s. If he was really on record with someone or really an associate, having to pay $5K to literally be around someone... doesn't make sense. When he says that he had no ambitions to become made and really wasn't involved, it almost looks like he's telling the truth there. I'm going to take a wild speculative guess and say he was probably an associate of Graziano, Coppa, or Lino (or an associate of someone who was under one of those guys)... one of those Brookyln guys who had like a zillion people under them at one point, but are no longer around anymore.
I don't know who sounds worse here... Lovagio or Esposito?

Grimaldi's are interesting.
Little on Vito, nothing on the son. Both powerhouses.
But both shelved...
Exactly, Cammarano and Porky both apparent powerhouses shelved with no fight back
When the official boss puts you on the shelf you have no recourse. Honestly I couldn’t see this shelving last to long, I think Mancuso just wanted to embarrass and degrade them which he did. All four of them are big money makers and very well liked. I bet at some point he brings them back and puts them in a crew headed by someone very loyal to him like Johnny Skyway or Vinny TV if he hasn’t already.

I thought literally like 90% of the captains voted cammarano and porky in?

If Cammarano was voted in as the official Boss, how was Mancuso able to shelve him?
Because that vote didn’t mean shit. It’s apparent you can’t just round up a majority of captains and vote a Boss out. I’ll bet anything the other bosses backed him up and that’s how he stayed in power.
The Boss is the Boss until he’s dead or gives up the throne.

Isn't "Voting out" a Boss just a non-violent form of building a consensus with some/most of the Family to kill the Boss (ala John Gotti/etc.). Given the Commission isn't even around, you don't need anyone's approval.

What confuses things even more is it's the norm for the Bonannos to have acting captains while the captain is still on the street. It turns out even the acting captains have an acting captain when they have legal trouble, i.e. Giallanzo and looks to be the same with Pipitone.
I don't know where the Fasitta crew comes in. He's a Sicilian around the same area as the old Middle Village crew Pipitone was servicing for DeCicco but appear to be separate. I assume Masi was acting for the Fasitta crew as they're close but Masi is also close to the Grimaldis and it's hard to assume anything.
John Pennisi mentioned in some of his interviews that the Lucchesse family was going to set up a Brooklyn crew with Pennisi as acting captain and another member of Castellucci's crew as captain. Then we have Gravano acting for Toddo Aurello while Toddo was still on the street.

I hear what you’re saying but facts are we know Mancuso was voted out by vast majority of captains yet he still remained in power and those who orchestrated the coup are now persona non grata. That vote meant nothing and like I said I bet the other bosses backed him up because they don’t want same thing to happen to them.

I think Pennisi mentioned that every crew was encouraged to have an acting captain. Castelucci not naming an Acting Captain for the Brooklyn Crew was seen as weird by Pennisi.
