Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Quite interesting how this guy all but escaped scrutiny. One of the few post 1930's guy to do so. Without Valachi, we would have never have heard of him or knew he was a factor.
Kinda serves as another reminder that a high profile doesn't always equate to one's status in the mob. Take the case of Phil Lombardo, in the 1960's after Valachi laid out the structure, one FBI agent was stunned because they had Lombardo pegged as being a leader citing his insulation from law enforcement. In the Eboli report, Lombardo is discussed as a favorite of Vito Genovese and despite being "soldier" was frequently mentioned by and involved with the catena, Eboli and Miranda.
It's a "just because no one's in the woods to hear the tree fall" type of thing.

Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Is it possible that Moretti inherited the remnants of the Newark Family which seemed to go a number of ways: Philadelphia, Colombo, Genovese, probably Gambino and Bonanno as well?
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
I recall on one of these forums we came up with a list of who was in the Newark Family and where they went. We can do that again. Here's a start (I'm just doing this from memory, so correct me if I make mistakes):
Salvatore Lombardino (to Profaci)
Settimo Accardi (to Lucchese)
Anthony Riela (to Bonanno)
Emmanuele Cammarata (to Profaci)
Joseph Lolordo (from Chicago to Elizabeth, NJ)
Joseph Misuraca (to Profaci)
Salvatore Cannela (to Profaci)
Andrew Lombardino (to Profaci)
Gaspare D'Amico (boss, fled to Puerto Rico)
Anthony Dolasco (to Lucchese)
Benjamin Pizzolato (to Lucchese)
Michael Russo (to Lucchese)
Pietro Campisi (to Genovese)
Vincenzo Troia (from Springfield/Rockford; killed)
Tony Caponigro (to Philadelphia)
?Salvatore Chiri (to Gambino)
Salvatore Lombardino (to Profaci)
Settimo Accardi (to Lucchese)
Anthony Riela (to Bonanno)
Emmanuele Cammarata (to Profaci)
Joseph Lolordo (from Chicago to Elizabeth, NJ)
Joseph Misuraca (to Profaci)
Salvatore Cannela (to Profaci)
Andrew Lombardino (to Profaci)
Gaspare D'Amico (boss, fled to Puerto Rico)
Anthony Dolasco (to Lucchese)
Benjamin Pizzolato (to Lucchese)
Michael Russo (to Lucchese)
Pietro Campisi (to Genovese)
Vincenzo Troia (from Springfield/Rockford; killed)
Tony Caponigro (to Philadelphia)
?Salvatore Chiri (to Gambino)
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
You can remove LoLordo, as the Amari/DeCavalcante family was its own entity by the time he left Chicago and he would have gone straight to them given his Ribera heritage. He was also NY-based during his time in the DeCavalcantes.Antiliar wrote:I recall on one of these forums we came up with a list of who was in the Newark Family and where they went. Tony Caponigro is unlikely also. He would have still been fairly young when the Newark family disbanded and had spent a lot of his formative years in Philly which makes me think he was always associated with them even as a teenager in Newark. He was also Calabrian and I'm not sure if any of the alleged Newark members were from Calabria.
Other members would be:
Stefano Badami - boss (deposed or stepped down 1931, later murdered in 1955; maybe Lucchese after Newark)
Sam Monaco - underboss (killed)
Frank Monaco (not sure if made, Badami's alleged killer in 1955; maybe Lucchese)
Luigi Russo (killed)
Carmine Battaglia (Genovese)
Possible:
Aniello Santagata (Genovese)
Joseph Accardi (Lucchese)
Wouldn't surprise me if they were made up of these named guys plus a few old timers or sleepers and not much more. Probably a small, short-lived family based on our earlier discussions on them.
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
I thought Lolordo was wrong after I posted, but like I wrote, it was just from the top of my head. Caponigro was another, but I couldn't think of anyone else who switched to Philadelphia. Maybe no one did.
Luigi Russo, I found in a file (maybe in the Valachi manuscript) that he may have been Frank Scalise's underboss.

Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Whoa, that'd be something if Scalise was simply deposed/stepped down but his underboss was killed.Antiliar wrote:I thought Lolordo was wrong after I posted, but like I wrote, it was just from the top of my head. Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Wrong guy. Jimmy Marino/LaPore, was either the underboss or a caporegime for Scalise. Took me a while to find the Valachi file, so Russo, I guess, was a Jersey guy. Marino was killed in a barber shop in the Bronx by one of Ciro Terranova's nephews, a brother of "Joe Baker" Catania. He was one of four men who were killed (that he knew of) connected to Maranzano's assassination. Interestingly, Valachi said he never heard of a nationwide execution of Maranzano men, which ironically puts the lie to what Peter Maas wrote in "The Valachi Papers."
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Thanks for clearing it up, man. All the records I could find for Luigi Russo put him in New Jersey so I was thinking that'd be weird if Scalise had an underboss in Jersey at that time. Makes more sense now.Antiliar wrote:Wrong guy. Jimmy Marino/LaPore, was either the underboss or a caporegime for Scalise. And yep, you have to be very careful whether you're reading a direct quotation from Valachi or one of Maas' editorial narratives. Same goes for any book I guess.

Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Another strong candidate for a former Newark member would be Gambino captain Antonio "Bada Noste" Paterno. His son, Joseph took over his crew in 1956.
Arturo Misuraca (later identified as a made Colombo member and a brother of John) may aslo have originally been with the Newark Family.

There you have it, never printed before.
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
paterno's nickname was "padre nostro" our father
Re: Historical Genovese Leadership Crews
Not 100% on topic, but I thought it fit here:
A source claimed that a power struggle was building between Mike Miranda, backed by Antonio Carillo and Ruggiero Boiardo, and Vito Genovese, backed by Thomas Eboli, Peter DeFeo, and "probably" Angelo DeCarlo. This was due to Miranda disapproving of Genovese making Gerard Catena his underboss.
Not sure the exact year the source gave the info. Anyone ever heard anything like this?
