Joe Morello, The Lomontes, Terranovas all came from this section of Italian Harlem between 1st and 2nd and E105th to E19th. Other members/affiliates included the Steve LaSala, the Reinas, Di Palermo, Gagliano and Greco all originated from and would play important roles in the future of both the Gen and Lucchese family. Following the death of Tom Lomonte in 1915, leadership shifted from Harlem to Little Italy. The Terranovas moved to East 114th (a larger Calabrian population), Harlem wasn't "absorbed" by D'Aquila like Gentile said so much as they removed the power.

1915-1923
Lower Manhattan
Salvatore Loiacano, from Marimeo, was a longtime resident of Little Italy, how early he joined is a mystery. This faction extended to Elizabeth, Bowery, E13th and goes back to the 1900's. Cecala, Mauro, Pecoraro, La Gattuta, Luciano, Masseria all seemed to be affiliated with. He was murdered in 1923 and the family split. A Bronx/Harlem Family and a Harlem/Lower Manhattan Family.

The newly formed Genovese Family in the 1920's has Yale/Pollacia of BK, Morello/Terranovas in Harlem and Masseria/Luciano/Genovese in Little Italy. It seems slightly different than Joe Bonanno's relatives and The Palermitani which dominated the Gambinos up to the 1920's.

Even in the modern era the Genovese's strongholds were still Bronx/Harlem, Lower Manhattan, Jersey, Brooklyn.

What crews were dominant under Luciano and Costello?

Are the contemporary crews easy to trace from the original 6 that existed during/up until Vito Genovese?

According to Tommy Palmer's FBI file, he took over Lucky Luciano's original crew. Plus I recall that Morello had a member (unnamed) in Brooklyn in the 1900s or so. Strollo took over the Vito Genovese crew; Carfano took over Frankie Yale's crew; Trigger Mike Coppola took over Ciro Terranova's crew. In White Plains former Camorra man Rocco Pellegrino was the caporegime there. Willie Moretti in Newark. Frank Costello may have been a capo in Queens, but that's a guess; Bill Bonanno said he was the consigliere in the mid-1930s, apparently succeeding an unnamed person, and before that Sam Pollaccia was the consigliere under Masseria. Morello was probably Masseria's underboss, then after he was killed Luciano was probably an acting underboss. Joe Adonis according to some sources was a capo too, and may have been part of Frankie Yale's crew, but some say he was a soldier without a crew or he was never made at all.

Elizabeth Street had a mix of Sicilians from different Families.

I read about them in Dave C's book as well as your article (if I remember right, it was you guys who ID'd him as a boss but I can't remember if Dave said that as well) and it's that transition period between the Morello leadership and the Genovese/Lucchese split that has grabbed my interest though I know nothing more than what's in the book and article (and even then I should re-read them both). I feel like a lot of the mysteries about the development of Masseria's family could be answered if we knew more about Loiacano's organization.

Even though the Genovese family had Morello, Terranova, and some other players from the old Morello family, everything I've seen tells me that the Luccheses were the real continuation of that family and that the Morello faction were rebels who paired up with the new group for survival and desperation for power. Calling the Genovese family the continuation of the Morello family would be kind of like saying Bonanno's Arizona family was the "real" Bonanno family but the situations are way different I know.

According to Tommy Palmer's FBI file, he took over Lucky Luciano's original crew. Strollo took over the Vito Genovese crew; former Camorra man Rocco Pellegrino was the caporegime there.

That's cool there's info that actually points to Luciano having been a Masseria capo. Hard to get confirmation on people's roles. Also, very interesting that you had two of the six alleged crews having such strong Camorra ties, with Genovese (who was at least an important associate of the Camorra in his younger years) and Pellegrino.

One perhaps who could be mentioned, although he was not a player in the 1910s and 1920s (but later), is Domenick "Terry Burns" Didato. He must have been atleast a captain and head of his own crew by the time of Luciano´s conviction. Apparently he requested a vote (in the aftermath of Luciano´s conviction) for selection of a new boss. Vito Genovese feared that Didato had enough power and support within the Family and that he very well could be selected new boss. So he ordered him killed. Didato lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn but I have no idea what crew he headed.

EDIT - Terry Burns is sometimes confused with a cousin of his with the same name murdered in 1933. This Didato was murdered in 1933 and probably a Lucchese member.

I don´t believe the Genovese Family only had six crews pre 1960s. The number seems way too small to me. But that´s a debate for another thread I guess.

There were more than six crews; those were just the crews that I recalled while I was typing out the post.

Mike Miranda did have his own crew. I believe he took over from his brother, not Vito Genovese.

I agree with Terry Burns probably having a crew. Too bad we don't know his associates and generally know little about him except for what Gentile wrote and that his brother was connected with the trucking industry and Jimmy Doyle.

I've speculated that if Costello had a crew, it may have been taken over in part by Willie Moretti given their closeness and that Moretti was originally an NY-based member. Just blind speculation based on relationships, though, so I wonder if anyone might have other circumstantial info that supports that.

He was in Buffalo until shortly before he was established in New Jersey, so I would say no. There was another guy in New Jersey who was related by marriage (I believe) to Joe Masseria named Samuel Guarino who could have been something, but my guess is that he wasn't higher than a soldier.

Thanks for the info. I knew Moretti was in Buffalo at the time Joe Bonanno came to the US, but is it a myth then that Moretti grew up in East Harlem and associated with Costello?

Was Moretti's brother made? Also, when did Tony Pro become part of a crew? I don't see his name and always thought he was a made guy and capo.
