1985 lists of made members for all families, unredacted

Re: 1985 lists of made members for all families, unredacted
The FBI had 71 identified Buffalo members in 1985. That's not including possible Canadian members, who the FBI always struggled to get intel on.
Definitely adds weight to the idea that they were a 100+ Family at their peak as the FBI estimates 20+ years earlier (they actually said ~120 members), though they never came close to IDing most of them in the 1960s.
Can't thank you enough for this resource Scott -- you're the man.

I don't know anything about LaBarbara only that he moved to Chicago, but it's possible he kept his Buffalo affiliation as this list indicates. Two relatives of the Falcones in Utica were identified by a source as members and one lived in Brooklyn/Staten Island while the other moved to Boston but they continued to be represented by the Utica decina.
Maybe an earlier precedent for the Bonanno member who moved to Chicago and stayed with them.

Haven't seen much on LaBarbara, but in one source he's ID'd with the North Side crew.

Could be that he transferred to Chicago, or could be that he stayed under Buffalo but worked with Chicago members. Doubt that this would’ve been a problem and I imagine that the admins of the two families would’ve reached out to each other to facilitate or formalize cooperation if he didn’t transfer. The Carlisis having members in both families I’m sure gave them a strong link.

These are field office based, so assuming Rochester was handled out of Buffalo?

That is likely it since they were listed separately in the 1988 charts and the 1993 list that Snakes posted.

That is most likely the case considering other reports had the family at 45 members in 1989 and 1991, as well and 49 members in 1993. This would suggest the 20 or so Rochester names on that list weren't actually considered part of the Buffalo LCN.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 8:59 pm

I considered that, as Albany was designated as "Members residing in Albany" (the division), but the Buffalo list specifically categorizes them all as the "Magaddino Family" opposed to a geographic designation. Whether or not it's consistent with other FBI lists, there's no question they're categorized as Buffalo members on this one. At least one Rochester member (Sam Campanella) returned to the Buffalo fold years earlier but I believe was deceased by this time.
Rochester wasn't a sanctioned Family so the members there formally belonged somewhere, just a question of whether the Commission considered them a rebel faction of the Magaddino Family or if a Bonanno transfer did take place for a time.
The Palma Boys tape indicates Buffalo was still involved in Rochester politics in the period leading up to the Commission case. A summary of the Justice Department's analysis indicates Sam Russotti and Joe Todaro were part of the administration of the same Family who needed Commission intervention via Tronolone of Cleveland/FL, but given the FBI misidentified the position of Salerno himself even after listening to those tapes it makes the summary questionable.

To follow up on this, from my info the Chicago Joe Larbera seems to have died in Buffalo, but he died in 1983. Maybe the FBI listed him as a Buffalo member because he had returned there and perhaps they were still carrying him as alive. Alternatively, this was a different guy than the Chicago Joe LaBarbera.PolackTony wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 8:09 pmCould be that he transferred to Chicago, or could be that he stayed under Buffalo but worked with Chicago members. I think it is the former. In the first page of this thread for the Boston Division it lists Frank Scibelli as a Capo in the New England Family but it specifies that he is a Genovese member.
