Erminio Gattellari
So I ran across a picture of a supposed Genovese family soldier that I've never heard of and the caption to this picture while it did read like a wikipedia entry was still quite interesting. If even half of it is true it would be worth finding out I can't post the picture but here's the caption verbatim
Extremely rare photo of Calabrian Genovese crime family soldier & hitman Erminio 'Remy Double' Gattellari. Erminio was born in the small town of Cariati in Calabria, Italy and it was around the mid 1980's that he came to the US after making a name for himself as a ruthless hitman for the 'Ndrangheta clan of Boss Nucco Repaci. Nucco was very close to Genovese Boss Vincent Gigante and it was agreed for Erminio to come to the US to aid the Genovese family. At first Erminio was mocked due to him being in his late 30's and barely speaking English, but it didn't take long for him to become a feared hitman and he wanted everyone to know he wasn't the guy to fuck with. It is said he was a very quiet guy and rarely spoke to anybody and only seen conversating with Boss Vincent Gigante and that too was on rare occasions. According to Gambino underboss turned rat Sammy Gravano, "vicious animal. When someone was talking I would look into his eyes and see nothing. When you look into someones eye, anybody, and you don't see nothing it's a problem. No man is born like that. He was as vicious as a snake..." Erminio was allegedly made around the mid 1980's and not much is known about that either, it is believed he is responsible for more than 100 hits from 1984-2003, all sanctioned by Boss Vincent Gigante. This man was practically a living ghost outside of Cosa Nostra and if it wasn't for Sammy Gravano and the FBI we wouldn't know about his existence. He is now allegedly retired from the life and lives in his hometown of Cariati with his 3 sons and grandchildren.
Obviously the 100 hits part is a red flag but I thought there was enough info there that one of you might be able to confirm this guys existence?
Better yet maybe someone has heard of him and can fill me in!

Re: Erminio Gattellari
Cariati is in Cosenza, which is already interesting as the paradigmatic ‘Ndrangheta clans are from Reggio and it is not easy to even find any info on the history of clans in Cosenza or Catanzaro provinces. I don’t have any info about Gattellari specifically, but his coming in to the Genovese family in the 1980s makes me think of a bunch of these Calabresi guys who were running around Chicago and hooked up with the Outfit during the same decade. Involved in drugs and several homicides. My suspicion is that when these guys would get in trouble in Italy their bosses used connections to US LCN families to send them over here. Given the large non-Sicilian membership, I’m not surprised that the Genovese, like Chicago, seem to have had close connections to mafia groups outside of Sicily.

He was sponsored for membership by Giacomo Vacari, who is also his biographer.

To Everyone: My recollection may be way off, but the particulars surrounding this soldier, i.e., coming from Italy to be made into the Genoveses, sounds similar to an individual coming from Sicily and being made into the Springfield, Massachusetts, faction of the Genoveses. Can't remember that soldier's name, but he was Sicilian, not Calabrian.

I'm not saying you intentionally put out fake news, but the person who originally wrote it did. When looked for this I only found it on some Instagram database that's got malware all over it. It could have been something created by Giacomo Vacari, who if you don't know is a poster on gangsterbb who makes up fake mobsters with full biographies. He comes across as knowledgeable by mixing up facts with his fiction and tries to get people to fall for his lies. He's been confronted about it several times, but as far as I know he still posts over there. But if he did originally write it on gangsterbb, it must have been deleted because it didn't show up in my search results. Just have to be careful who copying and pasting from questionable sites.johnny_scootch wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 5:43 am
I certainly didn’t mean to be peddling fake news here at all, it was actually more of a question than a news brief.

Vacari also does the “Button men of New York” blog right? The one you have to pay for?

Re: Erminio Gattellari
Is there any indication that the Genovese, under Gigante or otherwise, have had any links to ‘Ndrangheta clans? Even if this profile is fake, it’s an interesting question. A number of years back there was a bust of an alleged ‘Ndrangheta-linked drug operation based out of a pizzeria in Corona (surname Gigliotti, which was also the surname of one of the Calabrese zips in Chicago, Camillo Gigliotti). The Corona location makes me wonder if these people were connected to the Genovese at all.

Yes I understood the Vicari comment but I’ve never been on GBB so I guess I’m not as used to the smell of his bullshit bios as you guys are.Antiliar wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 11:47 am

I didn't mean Vacari wrote it, just that it's the same sort of person who writes bullshit around the internet.
As for Gattellari, he was sponsored for membership by Paulie Stripes DeMarco on June 1st 1986 at 7 PM and they had coffee cake and pignoli cookies to celebrate. Mario Gigante stopped by the after party and ate part of a pignoli but didn't finish it, he just wanted to send his regards to 'Ndrangheta boss Nucco Repaci on behalf of his brother Chin.

I understood. When I first saw the post Vacari is the person who came to mind.B. wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 8:07 pm I didn't mean Vacari wrote it, just that it's the same sort of person who writes bullshit around the internet.

BTW, the night after the party and to make his new member known in the New York Cosa Nostra community, Chin sponsored a square dance featuring Merle Haggard and a barnyard buffet. John Gotti and Carmine Persico were seen dancing a jig around Gattellari. They were said to be fat and happy by night's end. The informant was surprised that to discover they were such big fans of country music. This is a according to a top secret New York FBI report dated 1 December 1986.
Re: Erminio Gattellari
I heard that too. Mafia square dancing is a non-Sicilian thing and Chicago also does it.
