Dubious Scarfo quote

Post by Ivan »

All right, I have run into a couple people online who claimed that back in the 50s, someone was harassing Nicky Scarfo's wife, so Scarfo shot the guy to death and then shouted "I love killing people!".

This puts a smile on my face but I've been unable to substantiate it. Anyone know if it actually happened?

Leonetti talked about something similar when they were putting Falcone's body in the trunk and Scarfo said "I love this."

I always thought that quote was taken out of context. The true quote was "I love this the big shots dead" he wasn't saying he loves killing people he was saying he loves the fact that this person who he didn't like was dead.

Yeah, it was said in context with Falcone being dead. There is no doubt that Scarfo enjoyed a good hit, though, so maybe it was a little bit of both.

As for the original quote in this topic, I've never heard of anything like that.

While I doubt even a borderline clinical moron like Scarfo would proudly make such a proclamation, there are people out there who do in fact truly enjoy killing others.

How many homicides happened in the time Scarfo was boss? I wonder how he compares with Angelo Bruno or John Stanfa.

Phil Testa, Nicky Scarfo, and John Stanfa seem to have been roughly equally violent. Bruno was violent but spread it out a bit more.

Correct. Natale and Merlino also racked up a lot of bodies during their brief run on the street. It was only after the Merlino indictment of 2000 that the level of mob violence began to taper off in Philly.

I think that "Homicide John" was probably the most violent of the bosses if you go by number of hits relative to the size of the family at the time relative to the amount of time involved.

Of course I'm not actually going to calculate that.

Here is a list during the Bruno era posted a while back.

Dominick “Reds” Caruso/1962 (Body Not Found) - The hit was carried out by Nicky Scarfo, Salvatore Merlino, Santo Idone, Santo Romeo and Anthony Casella. Soldier Anthony “King Kong” Parella was also involved in the hit. Scarfo dumped the body and had then 9 year old Phil Leonetti ride with him so it wouldn’t look suspicious.

William Dugan/1963 – This was the longshoreman who was stabbed to death by Nicky Scarfo. The hit that got him banished to AC. Not Mob Related

Ferdinand Iacono/1963 – Associate

Robert DeGeorge/1969 – Associate – Killed by Joseph “Chickie” Ciancaglini. Frank Sheeran was also involved.

George Feeney/1970 – Associate - Killed by Ralph Natale.

?????/1970 – Killed by Nicholas “Nick the Blade” Virgilio. It was the stepfather of the girl he was dating. Not mob related. This was the hit that Judge Edward Helfant screwed him on.

Pasquale “Jimmy Ross” Procopio/1972 – Associate

FNU “Chicago Louie” Matteo/1972 - Associate

Joseph “Joey” McGreal/1973 – Associate – Killed by Ralph Natale

Alvin Feldman/1974 – Associate (Body Not Found) – The hit was carried out by Frank “Chickie” Narducci, Santo Idone, Joseph “Chickie” Ciancaglini and Joseph Scalleat.

Edward “Butchie” Snee/1975 – Associate – The hit was carried out by Peter “Pete the Crumb” Caprio and Fulvio “Anthony/Tony" Capozzi.

Louis DeMarco/1976 – Associate - The hit was carried out by Philip “Crazy Phil” Leonetti and Vincent Falcone

Guiseppe “Pepe” Leva/1977 – Associate – Killed by Alfredo Ferraro

Michael “Mikey CoCo” Cifelli/1978 – Associate – Killed by Salvatore Merlino and Salvatore “Salvy” Testa.

Edwin Helfant/1978 – Associate- The hit was carried out by Nicholas “Nick the Blade” Virgilio and Nicky Scarfo

?????/1978 – Killed by Joseph “Joe Crutch” Curro. This was his wife’s boyfriend. Not Mob Related.

Vincent Falcone/1979 – Associate – The hit was carried out by Nicky Scarfo, Philip “Crazy Phil” Leonetti, Lawrence “Larry/Yogi” Merlino and Joseph Salerno. This one may not have been ordered by Bruno.

There was also a guy name Anthony Barrone who was killed in retaliation for his murder of a doorman that worked a mob nightclub. Not sure of the date. Think it was during or before the Scarfo era.

The hit that got him banished to AC.
As we know, this isn't true. Aside from what people like Leonetti have said, I also posted info a while back from the 1960s that talked about Bruno directly advocating for Scarfo, Chuck LNU (Merlino), and Louie Matteo and trying to help their case.

Also, I think people have to consider the way that most mob contracts are issued. Rarely does the boss simply "order" random murders. Normally someone has a grievance about someone and it gets carried up the chain of command to the boss, who may or may not agree that murder is the solution. It's true that sometimes a boss will issue a contract on a particular person, but usually he just approves contracts that are brought to him.
