Valenti's son appeared in Court and gave some up to date photos of himself - wasn't a smart move. Also Asaro's son was mentioned quite prominently in the media as an active Capo - may come back to haunt him sooner rather than later. I wonder how did Asaro pay for 2 lawyers if he claims he has no money.

 Good one Sonny. In the words of Archie Bunker "It's a mans job to convict them peoples from the Eyetalian mafia"

In all seriousness I can't fathom why he wasn't convicted. The evidence seemed pretty convincing. Maybe people really are sick of witnesses ratting in order to save their own skins.

Full agree with Carbone's opinion:
Ex-FBI agent: Weak evidence doomed case against Lufthansa heist suspect

The retired FBI supervisor who led the federal probe into the Lufthansa heist told The Post on Thursday that he “had a feeling” the case might be too threadbare to convict accused mobster Vincent Asaro.

“My gut feeling was that they didn’t have enough evidence,” said Stephen Carbone, 74, who spent countless hours probing the infamous Dec. 11, 1978, rip-off.

“When I realized that the only witness was the cousin, I didn’t feel that would be enough to convict,” he said.

Carbone, who is long retired from the bureau, said he monitored the trial’s developments by reading daily newspaper accounts and spoke with federal officials before the trial started.

He insisted that he had “no inside knowledge” on whether Asaro was guilty of plotting the heist with Jimmy “The Gent” Burke, as the government charged.

Carbone recalled Asaro’s name emerging during the course of the lengthy and far-flung investigation but only as one of many mob soldiers who were active back then.

“He was a soldier,” Carbone said of Asaro. “He was significant as any other soldier in the group [the Bonanno crime family]. We did not target him.”

The name of Gaspare Valenti — Asaro’s cousin who wore a wire for years and whose cooperation with authorities led to Asaro’s arrest in January 2014 — did not surface in the immediate aftermath of the Lufthansa heist, Carbone noted.

Carbone said that while he did not attend the trial himself, he spoke to a number of people who did -– he declined to say whether they were law-enforcement officials — and they, too, “didn’t feel there was enough evidence” to convict Asaro.

“Here’s the deal: From what I remember, I know there is a general policy that when you go to trial [in federal court], you feel confident 90 percent of the time,” he said.
“I’m sure they put a lot of work into it and feel very disappointed.”

Valenti stopped by Asaro's house yesterday for an espresso and cannoli.

Cleared ‘Goodfella’ gets visit from snitch’s son

A son of a snitch stopped by to visit reputed “Goodfella” mobster Vincent Asaro at home for 90 minutes Saturday — and, astoundingly, walked out alive.Asaro, 80, was enjoying his second morning of freedom since getting acquitted by a Brooklyn federal jury in the infamous 1978 Lufthansa heist when the unlikely guest darkened his doorstep in Queens.

It was reputed Bonanno associate Anthony “Fat Sammy” Valenti.

The chubby mobster had sat and stewed angrily in the back of the courtroom as his turncoat father, Gaspare Valenti, testified against Asaro — unsuccessfully, as it turned out.

Naturally, one might think the son would have been less than welcome when he parked a brand-new, white Jeep Sahara directly in front of Asaro’s home on 111th Street in South Ozone Park.

Especially since Asaro initially appeared to be in a bad mood.

“I’m not talking,” the less-than-jolly “Goodfella” had told a Post reporter half an hour earlier, when he came outside to take the garbage out.

“I have nothing to say,” Asaro added.

Fat Sammy's visit was contrived on the part of Asaro as a means to finally get those food stamps as now there surely is nothing to eat in his house !!!

Does Asaro ever look happy?

What extent did he have to do with the heist? And do we know who all the actual robbers were?

Why do they say Valenti's kid is an associate in that article, Asaro was heard on tape saying he should never have been made.

It was quite clear that Valenti was supporting Asaro over his father in court, yet they make out he's lucky to be alive, idiots.

He won't be clipped in this day and age but prospects for advancement, even in that crew, are capped.
