Mad Sam DeStefano

Post by Ninored »

Why did the outfit keep mad Sam around when he was clearly suffering from some form of mental issue even Tommy Dorso an associate said he once saw DeStefano roll on the floor, with spit running from his mouth, begging Satan to show him mercy and screaming over and over again, "I'm your servant; command me."

This sick fuck even forced a man into his car at gunpoint, took the man to his house and forced the man and his own wife to have sex with each other how can the outfit allow such a deranged man to be inducted and have the status he had within the outfit?

No other cosa nostra family would tolerate, let alone make, a mentally ill sociopath like mad Sam around them, so why did they allow this guy who was clearly mentally ill to even stay around them as long as he was without being clipped?

Was he inducted as an actual member? I don’t know about that. Im sure a Chicago expert on here would know for sure. I’ve read both, that he was and wasn’t.

One of, if not the biggest loan shark in Chicago. He was expendable by the early seventies, though. "The bosses had enough of Mad Sam. They had enough. How much were they gonna take?"

He was not indicted as a made member (and there is some debate as to his status) but nobody was until Family Secrets.

Fair enough, but how did the outfit's bosses react when he was representing himself in court? They couldn't have been pleased with the way he was acting in court and the amount of attention he was getting from it.

Just for the way he acted in court the must of wanted to kill him.

Plus why would anyone borrow money from this psychopath? If you couldn't pay him back, you were screwed.

I'd say that they way he acted in court was probably a contributing factor to his murder. Additionally, he was less favored by Accardo and Aiuppa than he was by Ricca and Giananca (dead and in Mexico, respectively). Why continue to put up with his antics when they had many capable younger guys like Turk Torello or Spilotro? This wasn't the type of guy who would be quietly put on the shelf, either. His usefulness was at an end.

So it's possible that he was made? I don't know much about the Outfit in general, but I've always heard that they wouldn't make him.

His brother Mario was definitely a made guy and as Snakes already said, Sam's status is still debatable.

Besides being one of the biggest money makers at the time, Sam also killed for the Mob and was feared by many. He was involved in few of the most brutal tortures/murders. He was involved in the brutal murder of Jackson together with Cerone and Buccieri who were capos at the time.

Ricca and Giancana were his alleged protectors but according to other sources, Sam also had direct connection to Accardo who in turn took Sam under his wing when Giancana fled the country. In addition, Sam belonged to the Battaglia-Alderisio-Nicoletti crew aka the Grand Av group.

I believe it was Cullotta who said that they used to refer to him as a “hillbilly”. The DeStefanos were a Sicilian family who settled in the coal-mining country in downstate Illinois before later relocating to Chicago, so Mad Sam didn’t have the typical Chitalian/“Shuhcawgo” accent.

What kind of rackets was Mario involved in? Were he and Sam partners, or did he have his own operations?

At first Mario worked as enforcer for his bother and was involved in the loan sharking business. For example, in 1963 it was Mario, Crimaldi and Spilotro who brought Leo Foreman in front of Mad Sam and suffered a horrible torture and death. In 1970, Mario was involved in a huge operations which involved cashing fake checks, some as high as $900,000, all cashed in different banks and than transferred to the chain’s 20 different subsidiaries or affiliates, with different corporate names which were owned by the Outfit.

He was considered made and listed by the FBI as a made man.

Interesting. I remember Roemer saying in his books that Mad Sam wasn't made.

Interesting to note is that when Giancana fled the country, DeStefano was seen visiting Accardo's home in River Forest every Friday to "settle accounts", which means that DeStefano was always direct with the Outfits top admin, such as Ricca, Accardo, Giancana, Battaglia, Alderisio etc.
