Luciano's release to help the war effort

Post by Jack Dempsey »

I watched a docu recently about this,Not much information as to what went on at the docks.Only that nazi collabarators might have been there,A ship was sunk.

Luciano went to see Socks Lanza.

Did they kill any nazi's?

It was part of 'Operation Underworld'. Luciano recommended Lanza to the Office of Naval Intelligence. Lanza gave ONI undercover agents union cards. The agents infiltrated the Fulton Fish Market looking for nazi spies and nazi sympathisers. The whole operation was hilarious considering the fact that at the same time in Italy Vito Genovese was buddy-buddy with nazi and fascist leaders. He met Goring and Mussolini; he was given an honorary title; he bought a castle and a power plant near the town of Nola in Campania, etc.

I did a quick search on Lanza,On wiki it says he jailed in 1943 for extortion on the docks.I cant remember the time frame as to when Luciano was released for this operation but it looks like they didnt take long for them to put Lanza away!

Luciano wasn't released from prison to help with the operation. Thomas Hunt sums up the events here:

You have to excuse me since im currently not in a position to open any youtube vid (im coming back home tomorrow), although the doc im talking about was called "How the US reistated the Sicilian mafia" and it had several parts.. you probably posted the same doc but I remember that those guys mentioned Lanza, Luciano and a bunch of Sicilian guys from those days who were involved in the whole operation

I believe John Dickie’s book Cosa Nostra talks about Luciano and the myths that he helped out Sicily during the war effort, but I forget the details. I read that book like 8-9 years ago.

The last testament of Lucky Luciano goes into it a little bit if I remember correctly.

I found it in a used book store and read it a few months ago, from what I recall he goes over the deal, I think he got moved to a prison with a warden who would play ball initially and then as the war went on and ended, worked out his release and where he was allowed to live. Not being able to return to America bothered him for rest of his life.

In Five Families by Sewlyn Raab, he clearly says Lucky actually did nothing to help the war efforts. And what he did tell them , they already knew and were planning on using.
