I wonder if any member ever had the balls/honor to refuse to kill a member of his family?

I don't know how true this story is but in Vincent Teresa's book My Life in the Mafia he tells a story where Raymond Patriarca wanted the son of one of his crime family members killed after a business deal went bad. But the father refused to kill his son and then Henry Tameleo persuaded Raymond to relent

John Petrucelli "adopted" Gus Farace after saved him from a deadly attack in prison. When Farace killed the DEA agent was ordered to Petrucelli to whack Farace but him refused and was killed for this.

The original poster is asking about mobsters who killed their own relatives.

Johnny Torrio had his uncle (by marriage) Big Jim Colosimo killed.

There’s no evidence that Torrio and Colosimo had any familial relation, this seems to be purely apocryphal. Torrio was born in Basilicata to Baresi parents, while Colosimo’s wife, Vittoria Moresco, was from Colosimi, Calabria, as was Colosimo.

I had always read that Torrio was the nephew of Colosimo's wife and that she invited him to come to Chicago (from New York). None of that is accurate? Thanks.

I think its still hard to determinate whether there was a blood relation between Torrio and the Morescos....Colosimos wife

At the most generous, there is simply nothing to indicate any familial link between Torrio and Moresco, apart from this longstanding narrative that he was her (or Colosimo’s) nephew. Seems pretty unlikely to me that that there was any unknown blood relation between her and Torrio, at least, as they didn’t even come from the same region in Italy.

A possible link could’ve been via Torrio’s stepfather, Salvatore Caputo, who was Calabrese. After Torrio’s biological father died, Torrio’s mother, Maria Castelluccio, emigrated to the US where she married Caputo in NYC. They had three more kids together. Caputo was a grocer and, reputedly, a bootlegger himself. According to his naturalization records, Caputo was from Zinga, Crotone, Calabria, and I don’t see any familial link between him and Moresco’s family (who, of course, were from Cosenza province). Vittoria did have a bunch of siblings, maybe one of them married someone related to Caputo, who knows, but when I looked into it I didn’t find anything.

My guess is that perhaps Torrio or someone else told people in Chicago that he was related to Moresco to explain his transfer there. My suspicion is that Colosimo and Moresco were linked to some old Camorra/Piccioteria-type of Southern Mainlander criminal network. Perhaps Caputo had some links to that world also, though certainly Torrio had other more clear-cut underworld connections such as Paul Kelly and Frankie Yale.

Sub topics since not direct with the OP's but:

in laws- The Ruggiano's and the murder of Frank Boccia, Gravano and his brother in law, Castellano and his son in law

you have the examples of Mancuso and Rastelli linked to the murders of their own wives

Also family members accusing their own for murder. One that sticks out is Frank Pasqua wrongly accusing his own father as the killer of Michael Meldish
