Wow. It's really the only other thing on par with the Godfather movies, Goodfellas and Casino.
It's because it's a TV show and I don't have the attention span to invest in something that's like 100 hours long total. So I never watch TV. I never read novels either. Last TV show ever watched was Law & Order when Orbach was on. I prefer the little self-contained stories you get in movies. But I might make an exception for The Sopranos.
Sopranos set the tone for cinematic quality tv shows. Back when it aired it was like watching a movie every sunday. Can also say the same about the wire but only reason it didnt get that much popularity was because it aired the same time at the height of sopranos

I think Vera Farmiga who plays Livia Soprano is the only one in the movie actually from Jersey and she’s Ukrainian. This all just scares me a lot about the movie, but I really trust David Chase.

That was one of the hurdles Coppola ran into when making The Godfather. Like 98% of the actors that played gangster roles before The Godfather were Jews or Irish playing Italians. He went to the studio and was like “yeah I need actual Italians in most of these roles”, and the studio wasn’t really in agreement initially.

I think The Wire is #2 right behind The Sopranos as the greatest TV series in my lifetime.

Same.

I only rank The Sopranos higher due to a more intense focus on personal turmoil and ethics, which I guess is more novelistic, while the The Wire is much more about how the personal interacts with the systemic, ie the social structures and institutions of a declined American city. I once read somewhere that (while there are overlaps between the two series), The Wire is about broken systems while The Sopranos is about broken people. While I find both themes compelling, I guess I find the novelistic/existentialist mode of The Sopranos more so.

Detective Jimmy McNulty of The Wire is my second favorite TV character after Tony Soprano.

I put McNutty, Bunk, Freamon, Bubbles, Omar, Avon, and Stringer in my all time top characters. Also really enjoyed Marlo, Prop Joe (super authentic Bawlmore accent), Colvin, Daniels, Ellis, and Snoop (who basically just played an exaggerated version of herself). Special shoutouts to Weebey and Bodie.

One of the most underrated parts about both the Sopranos and the Wire is all the characters are a bunch of regular looking people. None of the women are drop dead swimsuit model gorgeous, and all the dudes are just regular looking dudes. It’s a minor detail but it makes both shows so much more authentic.

Good point. Both shows were also very strongly rooted in their respective places, filmed on location, and had a number of local actors and authentic accents etc.

Right behind the wire is the shield but that's disputable. Some people would say breaking bad but I havent gotten into it. Though I was told without tony soprano there wouldn't be a Walter white

I haven’t watched the wire, what’s it about? Breaking Bad was good the first 2 seasons imo.

I never watched the Shield and couldn’t get into Breaking Bad when I tried watching it. I thought Deadwood was a great series, though it was cancelled early, and enjoyed Mad Men. I recently finished the fourth season of Gomorrah, which I loved. What a fuckin’ ride.
