Who was the problem that Merlino had with Stanfa?
Can I understand that Joey Merlino hated Scarfo sr and Piccolo but what was exactly his problems with Stanfa?
Was only the mega ego of Joey and his ambition to be the boss or Stanfa made a move against Merlino?

Merlino and his crew were running the street tax in Philly before Stanfa took over. They didn't want to give it up when Stanfa became Boss and wanted in on that money. That was really the crux of it.

The Philly Mob must have reached a very low level if to collect the street tax was a crew of wannabes.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 9:17 am Merlino and his crew were running the street tax in Philly before Stanfa took over. Re: Who was the problem that Merlino had with Stanfa?
In 1990 what have did? One heist on an armored car and stop, what racket was running? If Stanfa didn't induct him in 1992 how would be the boss? He was made only for his name then used Natale like Tony S used Uncle Junior.one of the 4-5 longest term bosses in LCN history?Uh for sure the feds eliminated first stanfa and after natale. It's easy to be the boss when the feds take out all your enemies and you stay in florida while your friends face jail time and you enjoy the money in Miami.joeycigars wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:07 amWasn't a crew of wannabes , There mostley family members of Scarfo and Burno high ranking made guys , Also Joseph Ciancaglini, Sr. was telling them what to do from prison , They were heirs apparent ,People went to prison ,died and were maimed over what they believed to be there right to the Philly mob throne , wannabes would be used the you tube gangster's , Joey Merlino is one of the 4-5 longest term bosses in LCN history still going hardly a wannabefuriofromnaples wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 9:57 amThe Philly Mob must have reached a very low level if to collect the street tax was a crew of wannabes.Pogo The Clown wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 9:17 am Merlino and his crew were running the street tax in Philly before Stanfa took over. However I will go down the PHILLY rabbit hole with you ,
The FBI says
Merlino rose to Philly boss of the mafia and one of East Coast Enterprise Bosses , Which included the Genovese, Gambino, Luchese and Bonanno families, Over 45 arrested in New York and Florida. The suspects allegedly operated as a part of a massive East Coast syndicate known as the "East Coast Enterprise."
Merlino was a target of Feds and other factions for decades( many attempts on his life ), did over a decade in prison , He was gonna do what he did or die ...and he didnt die
Maybe you mixed Joe Merlino up with Luisi the Philly boss of Boston luisi is on you tube

Joecigars I know who are now Merlino what I would say that he become boss because the philly mob was so weak after Stanfa arrest that was easy for him to say "I'm the boss now". For sure he did his time but for me he was lucky to didnt be the third philly boss to be whacked, and he is alive because there wasnt a Caponigro in the philly mob in 1990s and 2000s.

Furio go up to George Borgesi in person and call him a wannabe, LOL.
What Pogo said is most of it. There was also the resentment over Stanfa being a zip who took over when they thought it should be a local guy.

EYYYY ALL YOU CHOOCHES OUT THERE IT'S THE KID
Re: Who was the problem that Merlino had with Stanfa?
Stanfa was a nobody, a general without an army. He had no connections in South Philly and was only boss because the zip Gambinos pushed for it.
Because he had no connections to South Philly, he had to surround himself with dipshits like John Veasey and guys with zero loyalty to him like Ron Previtie, who was an ex-cop (which is against the rules of lcn). Stanfa was living in the both the wrong country and the wrong century.
Merlino and his guys were actually from South Philly and all grew up together. Merlino was the son of a (former) underboss and he was surrounded by many guys who were like second or third gen mobsters. Merlino has stayed in power because he was schooled in he rules from a young age by his father and because his guys have all mostly stayed loyal to him, due to having all grown up together.
Merlino got lucky there was a power void, but Stanfa was a disaster and Nicky Jr would’ve been just as bad as a boss.

Re: Who was the problem that Merlino had with Stanfa?
Merlino cleverly exploited the power void created after Stanfa's arrest, but I don't understand why people often say he "won the war" against Stanfa, since it was the feds who removed Stanfa from the scene. Unless people think the feds were working for Merlino, I don't see how can he be credited with this.
I don't mean Merlino isn't a capable boss, but still imo it's quite uncertain who would have won if Stanfa remained on the street.

Technically now Merlino is the second longest-running current official boss in the US, only behind Amuso

Yes but is the first if you count that he is free while Amuso is jailed for life.chin_gigante wrote: ↑Tue Jun 29, 2021 3:51 pm Technically now Merlino is the second longest-running current official boss in the US, only behind Amuso
Re: Who was the problem that Merlino had with Stanfa?
The publicity aside, it is true that another way Merlino is like Gotti is that neither of them were really moneymakers themselves. Gotti admitted the "best (he) ever did was go on a few hijackings." But they both had/have a certain leadership quality that made other guys follow them.
All roads lead to New York.
