I was there recently staying in North Beach and ate at Alioto’s in the Wharf. Not much of significant Italian population. San Jose is very limited as well, and their Little Italy is reduced to a block.

I lived in North Beach for years in the 90's back when it was grimy and all hookers and strip clubs. We had an old Italian couple that we rented an apartment from they must have been in their 90's. They we talking about how much had changed. I miss the old North Beach never knew or heard of connected guys but wasnt really asking as I was a teenager and much more interested in the strip clubs at the time lol.

North Beach and Chinatown are my favorite places to visit when I’m vacationing in the city.

A few years ago, I was talking to an older Chinese gentleman who had spent most of his life in Chinatown. He was saying that almost all of all of North Beach today is owned by Chinese people. So, I guess the Italians didn’t invest in the area to own property like the Chinese. But, that was one local guy’s opinion of the area anyway.

He was also talking about all of the illegal gambling rooms and underground tunnels throughout Chinatown. I wanted to ask him about OC, but I didn’t want to be a typical dbag tourist and be disrespectful.

SF and SJ had significant Italian populations in the early 20th century, most of the populations have moved elsewhere. Many moved to the central valley. There are Italian owned businesses, especially restaurants, food and wine distribution, all over California.

One of the Misuraca brothers, Angelo, also died young near Chicago in 1922. Haven't seen a cause of death but he was only 27. Given the way different Misuraca brothers got involved in the mafia in so many cities, curious about Angelo.

Looks like Angelo Misuraca died of injuries sustained in WWI, and likely was in the Chicago suburbs as there was a large military hospital (which today is a VA hospital) in Hines, which is a tiny village next to Broadview. The article states that he died in Maywood, which is also next to Broadview; during/after the war I believe that the military may have had several hospitals in the area.

The openness around the wives still stands out with this group of SJ members. John Misuraca's daughter Rose Camarata spoke openly about the organization with her husband and his friends. She told Costanza an old story about a police officer in Newark named Lombardino who was also apparently a made member. She said he killed someone and hid the murder weapon in John Misuraca's store in Bloomfield. This would have happened around mid-1920s.

Goes back to another discussion we were having in one of the Sicily threads... the two professions you never see among mafia members are law enforcement or journalist. You do have to wonder though if a cop was a blood relative of a mafia clan and his subservience to the mafia was total, could an exception have been made earlier in mafia history? There is still some confusion with the Stuppagghieri in Monreale having police as members.

The Lombardinos were in Newark fairly early and Salvatore Lombardino is often mentioned in early FBI reports as a prominent NJ mafia figure during the late 1920s / 1930s. This is supported by him attending the 1928 Cleveland meeting and bringing a nephew as his aide. He brought two nephews into the mafia and later two of his own sons. The nephews came from different fathers, opening up the possibility that Salvatore Lombardino had a brother or two involved with the mafia as well. I have found some info indicating other older Lombardinos related to Salvatore were involved in early NJ crime (one being murdered), but nothing about his brothers and no police officers.

Now I'm not going to take some ancient rumor that Rose Misuraca remembered from when she was a little girl and say it's proof that a police officer was a made member, but it's an interesting story and adds to some of the mystery surrounding the Lombardinos.

On Pogo's succession chart he has a couple of Lombardinos, both named Salvatore (Sr. and Jr.), listed as Colombo (Profaci) Jersey crew captains. I was reading it yesterday and I knew that name sounded familiar.

There are the known Lombardinos who were members:

Salvatore Lombardino Sr.
- Andrew Lombardino (nephew)
- Paul Lombardino (nephew)
- Rosario Lombardino (son)
- Salvatore Lombardino Jr. (son)

Lombardino Sr. and possibly the nephews were members of the Newark family who transferred to the Colombos.

I made a mistake in my earlier post... when I said older Lombardino relatives were involved in crime, I meant older relatives of Saverio "Sam" Monaco. Lombardino and Monaco were both important Newark members from the same part of Sicily and their families were in Newark early on, got them confused.
