Scarpa talked about a 1981 sitdown held in Brooklyn and attended by Carmine Persico, Tom DiBella, Jerry Langella, other Colombos, and "high-ranking members" of the DeCavalcante family. He claimed it was "serious" and involved John Matera, who had been killed previously.
The DeCavalcantes' Brooklyn faction had a presence in Miami, so I assume it was related to that but I would be curious who was involved.
Anyone know more about this?

Re: 1981 sitdown between Colombos and DeCavalcantes
According to a CI the Colombo captain down in south Florida Johnny Matera, had apparently moved some of his rackets into other Family´s territories which caused a tension with the Gambinos. Sitdowns to solve the matter took place in early 1981. The CI said that also some Utica members were involved, but I don´t know on which side of the table. Although not mentioned by the CI, it´s possible the DeCavalcantes too had a beef with Matera regarding his rackets expansion. (I´m guessing the sitdowns mentioned by Scarpa are the same ones mentioned by this CI.) If I´m not mistaken, the sitdowns were held down in Florida (but there could have been following up sitdowns later held in Brooklyn I guess.) Matera was later murdered but I´m not sure it had to do with these sitdowns. I think Scarpa said Matera was killed for dealing drugs.B. wrote:Scarpa talked about a 1981 sitdown held in Brooklyn and attended by Carmine Persico, Tom DiBella, Jerry Langella, other Colombos, and "high-ranking members" of the DeCavalcante family. I'm pretty sure I read that the Bonannos were also unhappy with Matera and on a bug planted by Broward Sheriff's Organized Crime Bureau were recorded discussing Matera's move into southern Broward County as well as the Phillip Giaccone murder. If I remember correctly Matera only operated in Palm Beach and Broward counties so it's more likely that it had something to do with the heroin that was being shipped through Florida into the Northeast including Decavalcante territory imo.HairyKnuckles wrote:According to a CI the Colombo captain down in south Florida Johnny Matera, had apparently moved some of his rackets into other Family´s territories which caused a tension with the Gambinos. Yeah, Scarpa said Matera was killed for selling drugs, and I think Joe Dogs said in his book that Matera was killed for letting LE follow him to a meeting with Carmine Persico, which violated Persico's parole. Seems to have been one of those guys that was asking for it one way or another.
Since this meeting was held after Matera's death, it may have had to do with distributing the rackets he had apparently taken from other families. Frank Cocchiaro at that time was living in Florida and had some guys down there, so it could have involved them. Sam DeCav himself was living in Florida full-time by then, too.

Re: 1981 sitdown between Colombos and DeCavalcantes
I just checked...the sitdown/meeting Scarpa described took place on May 6, which is 2 months prior to the Matera hit. So Matera was still alive while this was happening. But you´re probably right. The meeting could very well have been negotiations on distributing the rackets Matera had "stolen" from the DeCavalcantes.

Ah, thank you for the clarification. For some reason I had it in my head that Matera was killed at the end of 1980.HairyKnuckles wrote:I just checked...the sitdown/meeting Scarpa described took place on May 6, which is 2 months prior to the Matera hit.
