There's a relatively new pizza place in South Philly called Angelos that looks insane. I saw it on a pre-covid Fuck That's Delicious episode and it looked crazy, looked worth taking a trip to philly for.

Unfortunately today, at least in NYC.. and I'm going to assume the same for Philly, a lot of the newer, trendier spots blow the old school, open for 85 years, red sauce establishments out of the water. The old established popular places are great for nostalgia and atmosphere, that's about it. Not saying you'll get a BAD meal from the red sauce places that are synonymous with LCN, but most half-ass it and just coast off reputation. Some of these newer yuppish type of places are crazy good... actually caring about the ingredients, fermenting the dough for pizza and bread for days, flying in the brick oven piece by piece from Naples, hooking up with farmers near by for fresh meat instead of using Western Beef, etc.

I don't know much about Philly but I bet if you dig, you'll find spots in the more gentrified pockets of South Philly or somewhere like Northern Liberties that would blow the old school Scarfo era establishments away

Any spot in particular??? My grandma lives in New Hampshire was going to go visit soon and then come down stop in ct. and then head to stay with my buddy in Brooklyn. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks

Frank Pepe on Wooster st is great but I like Sally’s a little more an would recommend them both legendary joints nonetheless

I was at Angelo’s place last night for dinner. I haven’t been in a couple years but it is still excellent. Side note, Ange is looking old. Much older than the last time I saw him. He seems to be doing well though as his place is always busy when I’ve been there.

Angelos had a fire And they are closed right now. Faffy Iannarella is always there. Very good pizza, Its almost impossible to get when they are open thoo. You have to keep calling and calling until the line isn't busy.

Stogie joes has very good bar food in general and good pizza. Joe Ciancaglini Sr. Is always there

Dave Portnoy did a review of Angelo’s when it was only a few days old I believe. He gave it a high score and the next day and every day since it’s been packed to the fucking gills. Philly is ok in my book but fuck Chicago and their pizza. New haven is really good I love Sally’s but NY is no slouch. We got totonnos, difara, joes, johns, lombardi, new park, paulie gees, prince street, L&B and on and on.

Angelo’s Pizza in South Philly is amazing and yes Faffy is always there as his son in law owns it. Get the Drunken cutlet sandwich from there, it’s honestly the best sandwich that I have ever had in my life. AMAZING!

Funny thing is that the place you’re actually most likely to see Philly LCN guys at that is believe it or not The Penrose Diner in South Philly.

I have never once been there to eat and not seen one of the Philly guys there. Great, Cheap diner food and two summer ago I found out they also serve booze one morning after a Mets at Phillies game in South Philly.

That footage that George A and Mayoface had of George Borgesi and Sharkey walking out of a diner together with Sharkey in a Phillies hat where you can tell Georgie spots the camera on him was taken at Penrose Diner. It was on one of the mobtalk sit downs after Sharkey got arrested.

Funny story- Last time I was there I saw Sonny and his hot young girl there eating breakfast before heading to the shore, she was in a bathing suit and just a cover up , she looked really good. That couple is funny because honestly when you glance at them you think it’s a young girl and her Father. Anyways, When I was parking my car to walk in (the parking lot is always full and it’s though to get a good spot there especially on a Sunday AM when the place is packed and you usually have to wait for a table) Sonny was driving a Lexus SUV and almost ran me over , honking his horn , screaming because someone stole a parking spot that he was trying to park in. Sonny is generally a huge entitled asshole 24/7 to everyone, even the general public.

Popi’s which is right next to Penrose Diner is a great spot too, I had a wild night there once back in summer of 2018. Excellent food and pre Covid you would get a lot of the South Philly Cougars/MILFS hanging out there guzzling Vino and looking for Dick.

There’s a neighborhood South Philly DJ called DJ Looch, generally anywhere he is playing at whether it’s at the shore in the summer or in South Philly , he brings out the whole neighborhood. You will see all sorts of South Philly Characters at the places he is DJing at- the Cougars/MILFS, the bar guys, the mob wannabes, the Philly LCN guys, 10th and O guys, Associates, the degenerate gamblers, the popular neighborhood people, knock around guys, etc

God bless. I agree. I fuck with New Haven pizza heavy, and I'm not one of these "NY or nothing" people - but NY's got it all. I actually have been liking this Detroit pizza trend that's swept the country the past few years. It's different.

But anyway back to NY pizza, apparently the Father and Son duo at Prince Street have "stepped down" ... whatever the fuck that means ... because of some 'racially insensitive' comments they were leaving as replies to Yelp reviews. Because of their location, popularity, and the current Instagram Generation of clientele that frequent the place, I could only imagine the type of bullshit they had to deal with in person and on the internet. I guess they snapped and started writing back - and were pressured by journalists/social media types until they stepped down. Not sure what that means for the business or what that's going to do to the pizza. But, whenever I want that type of pizza anyway (the smaller sicilian with the pepperoni) I have been going for Paulie Gee's Slice Shop version. Paulie is low key the NY pizza boss right now and he basically took what Prince Street did and perfected it.

There's apparently a girl trained by Paulie who is making pies out of her Park Slope apartment that you have to order by e-mail that are supposed to be fucking nuts too. She's got a waiting list until May right now.

This is refreshing to hear, because here I was picturing these younger South Philly guys partying to Blavat spinning hits from Dion and the Chi-Lites. I always thought "these younger guys are really into that shit?!?"

Philly itself has always had a top tier A++ DJ culture. So many insanely good DJs have came out of that city. Not sure how it's been lately and with COVID, forget about it, but for years on Friday and Saturday all over the city there were some of the best DJs in the world playing - lots of them local. Silk City Diner on Spring Garden (or around Spring Garden?) was a great spot. Before he hit the big time, super producer Diplo used to have a spot in North Philly that tripled as his apartment, a recording studio, and a venue space. Some great events were held at that spot.

We had planned to go to Burts but things got switched around and we ended up at Gino's east which was a bad choice. That stuff just isn't pizza...it's like ordering a fried ravioli and they bring you a calzone.

Frank and Dom Morano are both good guys, they dealt with all sorts of idiots on a daily basis over there. Cancel culture came for them based off of bullshit, I go there more often now because of that! FYI the lines aren't any shorter now. I personally don't think Paulie's square is better than Prince, I like the sesame seed bottom a lot but the Spicy Spring is untouchable imo. Paulie is actually the one who blew up Prince Street! When he was doing all those interviews, tv shows & top 10 lists 5+ years back he always had Prince in his top 5 and from all that promotion and really great squares they became a place with a line down the block from open to close.
